2.  HOLMBY WESTWOOD GREEN TEAM UPDATE

INTRODUCING GREEN TEAM TREE OF THE MONTH

The Green Team is delighted to introduce our first Tree of the Month Profile featuring the Coast Live Oak. Each month we will share a new profile of one tree species in our neighborhood.  Besides the tree’s botanic name, provenance and description, the profiles will indicate if the tree is drought and pest tolerant, its’ potential for root damage, a fun fact about the species and where you can find the tree in our neighborhood.

The profile information is primarily drawn from the STS Publication “Street Trees Recommended for Southern California” and the Selectree Cal Poly website.

Special thanks to Cassandra Franklin, Kathryn Welch Howe, Cage Hall, and Allyson Bunting for writing and designing the Tree of the Month Profiles.

5.  WESTSIDE PAVILION – THE NEW GOOGLE CAMPUS

Some residents have asked what was being developed at the old Westside Pavilion.  The info below was made available by the Westside Urban Forum for an upcoming meeting.  I found it very informative.
–Sandy Brown

One Westside – The New Google Campus

One Westside is a 584,000 square foot creative office campus in the heart of West LA that has been fully pre-leased by Google. Developed by Hudson Pacific in a joint venture with Macerich, the adaptive reuse project transforms the former inward-facing Westside Pavilion mall to an expansive, natural light-filled space with high ceilings, vast floorplans, plentiful skylights and a multi-level atrium.

The soon-to-be LEED Gold certified project has on-site solar panels and a seamless indoor-outdoor environment enabled by exterior terraces, patios and a rooftop garden deck with amenity space. By reusing the mall’s former steel structure, the project’s embodied carbon footprint is approximately 33% lower than if the campus had been built from scratch.

The project also was associated with the Vibrant Cities Arts Grant program, a first-of-its-kind initiative that redirected Private Arts Development Fees directly to artists, resulting in more than $650,000 in direct grants to LA-based artists–mostly artists of color, female and LGBTQ+ artists–who were suffering during the COVID-19 pandemic.

One Westside is set to be delivered to Google for tenant improvements in the first quarter of next year.

We are currently seeking donations to provide an additional 40 or more tiny shelters. These shelters provide an elevated standard of living from tent encampments while veterans are on their journey to find permanent housing and stability.

Each tiny shelter cost $10,000 which includes the shelter itself as well as maintenance and repairs. Consider donating today!

6.  UNCLAIMED BILLIONS IN CA – IS SOME OF IT YOURS?

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

California has about $10.2 billion in unclaimed property, and officials urge residents to check an online database to see if any lost money or valuables belong to them, according to the state.  One in three Golden Staters who visited the database end up finding property to claim.

Common types of unclaimed property are bank accounts, stocks, bonds, uncashed checks, insurance benefits, wages, and safe deposit box contents.

The CA database of unclaimed property is at https://www.sco.ca.gov/upd_msg.html  If you want to search for unclaimed property from other states, go to https://unclaimed.org/

HOUSEGUEST: SHADOWS FALL DOWN
Now through Jan 2, 2022
at the Hammer Museum

Artist Monica Majoli explores themes of melancholy and desire in this exhibition drawn from the Grunwald Center collection.

Houseguest is a series of exhibitions at the Hammer Museum in which an artist is invited to curate an installation drawn from the collections of the museum and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts. For her Houseguest exhibition, the Los Angeles–based artist Monica Majoli perused the Grunwald Center’s holdings of more than 50,000 works on paper over the course of many months. The experience of visiting the Grunwald study room, where the collection is available for individual viewing, was a primary inspiration for Majoli from the outset. The privacy of its enclosed environment, the intimate exercise of pulling unframed works from their boxes, and the viewing of works of art laid bare on a table are experiences echoed in this gallery.

1.  HALLOWEEN SAFETY

In order to assist the Los Angeles community in enjoying this fun-filled holiday as safely as possible, Los Angeles County has compiled a list of Halloween safety tips for children and their parents:

Tips for a Spooky & COVID-Safe Halloween

In addition to COVID safety, please read and take heed of these important general safety tips for Halloween:

  • Drivers should look for children walking on the street, running and darting in between parked vehicles;
  • Especially when in or near neighborhoods, avoid using cell phones and texting while driving;
  • Keep houses and driveways well lighted so children know they can approach your homes;
  • When inspecting candy, if in doubt, just throw it out;
  • Be sure to follow all traffic signals and laws and walk only on sidewalks, not the street; and
  • Adults should always accompany children, trick-or-treat in groups or have children be accompanied by a trusted adult.

PET SAFETY
Don’t forget about the four-legged members of the family on Halloween. Pets can be confused and spooked by strange sounds and sights, and unfamiliar people in costumes, so keep pets indoors and away from the front door. As always, make sure your pets also have up-to-date identification.

Have a safe and enjoyable Halloween!

3.  DRIVERS LICENSE RENEWALS FOR AGES 70+

Californians age 70 and older may continue to renew their driver’s licenses online or by mail through December 31, 2022. Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed legislation to extend this temporary rule.

The ability for senior drivers to renew at dmv.ca.gov/online – including for REAL ID renewals and even if their renewal notice states a field office visit is required – is another example of how Californians can take care of most DMV tasks without an office visit.

Customers applying for a REAL ID for the first time may start the application online and upload the required documents. They must visit a field office to take a photo and finalize the process.

Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB) is a grant program that provides eligible California homeowners up to $3,000 toward a residential seismic retrofit. The purpose is to help homeowners lessen the potential for damage to their houses during an earthquake by “bracing” the crawl space, when necessary, and “bolting” the foundation to the house’s frame. EBB has helped thousands of California homeowners complete retrofits!

In 2018, CAP UCLA and the School of the Arts and Architecture acquired The Crest Theatre on Westwood Boulevard. A landmark venue dating back to depression-era 1940s, The Crest will be transformed into a new off-campus performing arts space that will be operated and managed by CAP UCLA.  The venue will be named the UCLA Nimoy Theater in honor of artist, actor, director and philanthropist Leonard Nimoy.

The Nimoy is envisioned as a much-needed public platform for contemporary performance and a cultural gathering space where the potential of performing artists and audiences will evolve together.

Shawmut Design and Construction was awarded the renovation project and took over the building this week.  The Nimoy is expected to open Fall 2022.

3.  HOLMBY PARK GOLF COURSE – NOW OPEN

The Department of Parks and Recreation would like everyone to know that the Holmby Park  Golf Course is now open for play.  The greens have been refurbished, and the flags are up.

This 18 hole Pony/Par 3 course opened in 1929.  Tickets can be purchased for $3  during the week and $4 on the weekend from the Club House located mid-course on the Club View side of the park.  The staff should be able to help if others who are not playing are on the course.  It is hoped that the TGA Premier Junior Golf group will be able to return this year.

During the past 18 months, the rules that are needed to keep the golf course in the best possible condition have been relaxed.  This is no longer the case. Since golf will again be played, it is dangerous to have other activities taking place on the course.  There are city ordinances that do not allow the following activities in LA parks, and they will now be enforced.

  1. Vending and the operation of businesses within the park
  2. The use of electronically amplified sound equipment
  3. Dogs off-leash
  4. Attaching anything to a tree or other plantings

In addition, all large gatherings need to be held in the designated areas which are located at the corner of Beverly Glen.

Please help us maintain our beautiful park as we make this transition.

5.  NOTIFY LA – REGISTER FOR EMERGENCY ALERTS

In a disaster, there are never too many ways to receive a possibly life-saving alert. That’s why the City of Los Angeles will use multiple ways to reach you if there is a threat to your life or property. The best way to ensure you receive alerts is NotifyLA.

NotifyLA is used to share critical emergency information with the public, including alerts such as evacuation orders, severe weather alerts, shelter-in-place, and more.

Sign up today for text, voice and/or email alerts.
Visit http://emergency.lacity.org/notifyla to register.

6.  METRO STAFF SHORTAGE & SERVICE CANCELLATIONS

Due to lingering effects from the most recent surge in COVID-19 cases in our region and a national labor shortage, Metro is experiencing impacts on our bus and rail service. We’ve had to cancel some bus trips in recent days and we want to give riders a heads up that may continue to be an issue in the days ahead — although we’re working hard to eliminate such disruptions to our service. Other transit agencies around the region are experiencing similar challenges.

We very much appreciate your patience during this time and we realize how many of you rely on Metro to get you where you need to go.

We encourage riders to use Transit — Metro’s official smartphone app — to plan bus and rail trips and check crowding predictions. We also suggest allowing additional time for your travel and following the Metro service alerts feed on Twitter.

7.  UCLA BOTANICAL GARDEN – PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES

The UCLA Botanical Garden is hosting an upcoming public series, “Transplanted: Examining Contexts of Plants, People, & Place.”  This series is free to the public and will be both in-person and live-streamed via our Instagram @uclabotanical! RSVP is needed – please see the flyer for more details.

Our first lecture will take place next week, October 21st.

CLASSICAL MUSIC CONCERT – ST. ALBAN’S CHURCH
St. Alban’s Church (Hilgard & Westholme)
Saturday, October 16 at 7:30 pm

St. Alban’s welcomes the community to a classical concert this Saturday.  Admission is free.  The concert includes the following:

  • SHUBERT MASS IN G
This piece is one of the most popular settings of the mass ordinary.  Schubert employed charming song-melodic composing with concertante passages.  It will be performed by the combined choirs of St. Alban’s and Altadena Community Churches.
  • BEETHOVEN PIANO CONCERTO NO. 4
Beethoven composed five piano concertos.  The fourth has been defined as the most gently spoken and poetic.  It begins with the piano alone, a move without precedent.  It will be performed with Orchestra by pianist Wendy Calwell.  She is the organist at St. Alban’s and vocal coach at UCLA.
  • MOZART THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO ACT II
This opera is the result of the collaboration of Mozart and the playwright Lorenzo da Ponte and explores the often contentious relationship between classes.  Mozart’s music is well-crafted, immensely sophisticated, tuneful, and infectious.  Performed in English, singers include current and former voice students from UCLA and a UCLA faculty member.

2.  CURBING SPEEDING IN WEST LA

From Councilmember Paul Koretz:

Paid for by a community traffic mitigation fund, LADOT has begun rolling out speed feedback signs at the direction of Councilmember Koretz.  These dynamic speed feedback signs are part of a multi-pronged mitigation strategy to reduce a rash of speeding that has plagued the district over the past year.

Signs are being placed in areas where we have seen some of the most severe traffic accidents — on Wilshire Blvd. (in the Westwood area); Olympic Blvd. (west of Century City); and Beverly Glen Blvd. (north of Santa Monica Blvd.)

Thank you to the Department of Transportation for partnering with us in selecting the best locations and going the extra mile to expedite the rollout for the safety of our community.

3.  VACCINATED STUDENTS – FREE UCLA FOOTBALL TICKETS

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) announced Thursday that middle and high school students that are vaccinated against COVID-19 can receive free tickets to a UCLA football game at the Rose Bowl.

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has partnered with Public Health to give away free tickets to a UCLA football game at the Rose Bowl to middle or high school students in L.A. County who’ve received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while tickets last.

Los Angeles Unified School District and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) are announcing a game-changing partnership to offer TK-12 students unlimited rides from October 1, 2021, through June 30, 2023, at no cost to families.

Under the proposal passed unanimously by both the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education and Metro Board of Directors at their respective board meetings on September 14 and 23, Los Angeles Unified will invest approximately $1.4 million per year for the next two years (cost sharing of $3 per student per year) to participate in Metro’s Fareless System Initiative Phase 1 plan.

Metro will provide every TK-12 student in Los Angeles Unified with a TAP card that can be used for free transit on all Metro-operated transportation, as well as several adjoining municipally operated transportation providers, including, to date, Culver City, Norwalk, Downtown Area Short Hop (DASH), Montebello, and Santa Monica. Los Angeles Unified will distribute TK-12 TAP cards to students, help promote the program to students and families, and support families with the registration and replacement processes.

To encourage Angelenos to embrace emergency planning now and throughout the year, L.A. Controller Ron Galperin released an online map featuring services and programs that will help families and communities prepare for unexpected natural disasters. “Get Ready, Stay Prepared” gives a rundown of the City’s emergency prep resources and maps the locations of L.A.’s fire and police stations and other important civic buildings that residents can access before and after a disaster.

Get Ready, Stay Prepared

Galperin’s resource map also provides a step-by-step checklist to prepare Angelenos for the next emergency — whether it be an earthquake, fire, flood or even a pandemic.

5.  DMV WARNING – TEXT SCAM

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminds customers that it will never ask for personal information related to driver’s license number, Social Security number or financial information through text or unsolicited phone calls or email.

The DMV has heard from multiple customers who have received text messages directing them to an unfamiliar link. If a link does not direct customers to the main DMV website at dmv.ca.gov, it is NOT from the DMV.

The department recommends customers ignore or delete any unsolicited texts or emails requesting personal information claiming to be on behalf of the DMV. Customers can report the phishing attack to the FTC at ftc.gov. If you receive a phishing email, forward it to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at reportphishing@apwg.org. 1.  PREFERENTIAL PARKING ASSISTANCE

Our sincere thanks to Councilmember Paul Koretz and to Deputy Jasmine Shamolian who were a great help in securing “enhanced enforcement” on streets surrounding UCLA.  Preferential Parking is restricted to residents on designated streets and handicapped persons.  At the beginning of each school year, many students disregard the street signs and are unaware of the required permit.  We will have stronger enforcement now that school has resumed.

2.  TRASH BIN SCAVENGERS

HWPOA has received complaints about individuals rummaging through our sanitation bins the night before and morning of garbage collection. Such scavengers are reported in every neighborhood.

According to LAPD, once the bins are put on the public streets, residents lose their right to privacy.  Scavengers can potentially be cited for littering if they leave trash on the ground or cited for theft from the City of Los Angeles if they take recycled items.  However, patrol cars are often not immediately available and this is a low priority situation for them.

Obviously, it would be difficult to wait until the morning of pick-up just when the truck is coming down the street to put out your bins.  Residents can call the WLAPD non-emergency number,  1-877-275-5273  or email 39318@lapd.online to report the scavengers.  You may also wish to contact your security company.

Please email Dana at hwpoa@aol.com so that our office can determine how many residents have experienced this problem.  Thank you.

1.  HOUSING BILLS SIGNED INTO LAW

Yesterday, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed SB 9 and its cousin bill, SB 10, two deeply flawed and troubling bills that target single-family areas for density but with different approaches.

Neither bill requires any affordable housing to alleviate California’s affordability crisis.

Because these bills apply to all California towns of at least 2,500 population, they effectively outlaw single-family neighborhoods throughout the entire state, turning every neighborhood into multifamily regardless of impacts or infrastructure needs – and without requiring any affordable units whatsoever.

Thanks to all of you who worked to defeat these bills — although our efforts weren’t sufficient.

The good news is that the Mayor of Redondo Beach is spearheading a ballot initiative to amend the California Constitution to clarify that, with limited exceptions, zoning and land use are local issues outside the jurisdiction of the state – it’s called the “Californians for Community Planning Initiative” (CCPI).  More information can be found at https://www.communitiesforchoice.org/

2.  LAPD CONTACT INFORMATION

Our new Senior Lead Officer James Allen provided the following information for contacting the LAPD:

EMERGENCIES IN PROGRESS: Call 911 for:

  • Life-threatening emergencies in progress actually needing police, paramedics or LAFD
  • This includes things such as a shooting, heart attack, home invasion or fire.
  • Your report should include: YOUR ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER AND A BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF THE EMERGENCY.
  • Based on your description the operator will determine if you need LAPD or LAFD
  • DO NOT HANG UP!!!!!

Please note: if you call 911 from a cell phone, the call will be routed through the nearest cell tower which may send it to either the CHP or LAPD operator.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY: 1-877-ASK LAPD (1-877-5273)

  • Non-emergencies such as loud parties, verbal disputes, public nuisance.
  • Once you get an operator and report an incident, remember to get the “INCIDENT NUMBER” which will ensure the report is actually recorded.
  • The non-emergency line can often require a long wait time, sometimes as long as 45 minutes. You are encouraged NOT TO HANG UP! It is suggested you put the call on speaker while you wait so you can do other things.
  • Depending on the incident , the operator may ask you to use the new Community Online Reporting System or “CORS.”
  • Many incidents can be efficiently reported using CORS (Community Online Reporting System).

COMMUNITY ONLINE REPORTING SYSTEM (CORS): https://lapdonline.org/home/content_basic-view/60409

  • Go to File A Police Report Online – Los Angeles Police Department
  • Following are some types of crimes that can be reported on CORS: harassing phone calls, lost property, vandalism, theft, theft from vehicles, minor traffic collision, hit and run. To see other criteria, go to the link above for details.
  • LAPD usually will not send an officer out to investigate these reported incidents, but will review your submission and, if approved, issue a final police report that you can use with your insurance company.
  • The system allows you to upload both videos and photos.

PLEASE NOTE: THE LOBBY at the WEST LAPD STATION will be staffed only during regular weekday business hours, and will be closed at night and on the weekends. More information can be obtained at: https://www.lapdonline.org/west_la_community_police_station.

MyLA 311 (the free app that you can download into your smartphone from your app store) allows you to get relevant information from all bureaus in the city, or to report concerns. You can also call 311, or go online to https://myla311.lacity.org

Below you will find important West LAPD contacts that might prove helpful.

SUN & SEA
October 14–16, 2021
Presented by the Hammer, MOCA, and CAP UCLA

An opera-performance by Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, Vaiva Grainytė, and Lina Lapelytė

Step into a sunny day by the sea. This theatrical installation stunned audiences at the 2019 Venice Biennale, earning its all-female creative team the coveted Golden Lion. The Hammer, MOCA, and CAP UCLA present Sun & Sea’s Los Angeles premiere, transforming The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA with 13 vocalists and 10 tons of sand. Sunbathing characters offer up a range of seductive harmonies and melodic stories that glide between the mundane, the sinister, and the surreal. From the sprawling tapestry of their lives emerges a piercing exploration of the relationship between people and our planet, captured in one afternoon on a crowded beach. The touring vocalists will be supported by members of L.A.-based choral group Tonality, best known for concerts on themes of social justice.

This is a great reminder that we all must prepare ourselves and our families now and throughout the year to ensure that we are ready to respond to disasters when they occur.

Take time this month to review your family emergency plan and supplies:

  • Make sure your supply kit includes enough food and water for at least three days, a flashlight, a fire extinguisher, and a whistle.
  • Consider each person’s specific needs, including medication.
  • Get a kit and make a plan.
