2.  WATER-WISE LAWN ALTERNATIVES – IMAGES

Earlier this week, HWPOA sent out an article regarding drought-tolerant lawn alternatives.  Several homeowners requested that we include images with the article and also asked where they might see the options in-person.

Click the link below to see the Water-Wise artilcle updated with pictures.  These are pictures from Google.

Water-Wise Lawn Alternatives – with pictures

If you would like to see these alternatives in-person, many are available at Armstrong Garden Center (the closest of which is on Wilshire at Centinela).

If you have any of these ground cover alternatives on your property, we would love to know about it – pros, cons, photos, etc. so that we may pass along the information to other homeowners.  Send an email to hwpoa@aol.com.

3.  ANTISEMITIC FLYERS IN WESTSIDE NEIGHBORHOODS

Yesterday, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County), Co-Chair of the Bipartisan Anti-Semitism Task Force, called on the FBI to launch a formal investigation into the hateful flyers that were distributed to homes in Brentwood and Pacific Palisades this past weekend.

In a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Rep. Lieu urged the FBI to do more to address the recurrent acts of antisemitism committed in and around Los Angeles County, noting that this week’s incidents were not the first time members of the community have received such flyers.

Read the letter here

In conjunction with sending the letter, Rep. Lieu issued the following statement:

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the antisemitic flyers distributed in Brentwood and Pacific Palisades over the weekend. These recent incidents follow a string of antisemitic acts that have shocked and appalled our community. We need the Department of Justice to help local law enforcement track down those responsible for these flyers, and to address the antisemitism that is on the rise here and all over the country. We have to hold perpetrators accountable and prevent these incidents. I stand in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors and urge the FBI to do more to keep our community safe.”

6.  UCLA NIMOY THEATER – CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Thanks to Sam Yebri for the following update:

Work on the Historic UCLA Nimoy Theater in Westwood Progresses as its March 2023 Opening Nears: The magnificent Crest Westwood Theater, a City Historic-Cultural Monument, is being transformed into a flexible, state-of-the-art space for live performance, the UCLA Nimoy Theater.  Exciting progress is being made, while the magnificent interior wall murals and other character-defining features have been carefully preserved.

The theater will be named in honor of longtime Westwood and CD5 resident and legendary actor Leonard Nimoy, made possible by a magnanimous naming gift from his widow, Susan Bay Nimoy. The Nimoy Theater will become the newest cultural jewel in CD5 when it opens in late March 2023, and will be jointly operated by the acclaimed Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA and the UCLA School of Arts and Architecture.

3.  METRO PURPLE LINE – WILSHIRE CONSTRUCTION

TRAFFIC ALERT
Westwood/UCLA Station: Purple (D Line) Extension Transit Project
Wilshire Blvd. between Veteran Ave. and Gayley Ave

Metro contractors will begin decking on Wilshire Blvd. in mid-August 2022.  Decking along Wilshire Blvd. between Veteran Ave. and Westwood Ave. is anticipated to be completed in 14 weekends.  There will be temporary partial street closures implemented on Wilshire Blvd. in four stages.  Decking work will be completed during continuous weekends, Friday through Monday.

Decking is a process where the street is excavated at a depth of about 10 to 12 feet and deck beams are installed over the piles. Concrete precast deck panels are then installed over the deck beams to create a temporary street surface for vehicles and pedestrian access.  This work allows for construction activities to continue below the surface of Wilshire Blvd. and help reduce community impacts.  Traffic will be detoured around the construction work.

August 19th through September 12th,
Continuous work hours: Friday, 11:00 p.m. through Monday,  6:00 a.m.

Notices will be updated weekly and more details can be found here.

1.  BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY

Next week, LAUSD opens the 2022-23 school year with in-person instruction, including Warner Avenue Elementary.  Welcome Back!

Please be careful when driving around the neighborhood at drop-off and pick-up times, and if you are a parent of a student, please observe all safety regulations when dropping off or picking up your children. Let’s keep the neighborhood safe!

2.  U.S. OPEN IS COMING TO L.A. NEXT JUNE

Last week, I was fortunate to have met with the USGA Championship Director of the U.S. Open, Charlie Howe, Michael Beam, GM/COO of LACC, and Ashley Chedwick, U.S. Open Director for LACC. Because this championship will attract an expected attendance of 22,000 with activities spanning the same dates of graduation weekend at UCLA, I was interested in knowing plans for the Westwood area, specifically Holmby Westwood.

The 123rd U.S. Open will take place at The Los Angeles Country Club next June beginning Mon., June 12th and continuing through Sun., June 18th. (LACC is on Wilshire between Beverly Hills and Comstock. There are two 18-hole golf courses spanning both sides of Wilshire Blvd.

The meeting was extremely helpful in understanding parking, transportation, and security needs of both the U.S. Open and the surrounding residential community.  A summary of the meeting can be found here:

U.S. Open – Meeting Summary

For ticket information, to know when tickets go on sale or receive relevant ticket updates, go to https://www.usopen.com/2023-tickets-updates.html

More than 3,500 volunteers will be needed to help in conducting the championship. They are an integral part of the U.S. Open Championship experience. To register to volunteer or for more information, visit: www.usga.org/2023usopenvolunteers.

The USGA is collecting information from nearby homeowners who are interested in potentially renting their home to a player during the week of the championship. While the majority of the 156 players stay in hotels, there are some that consider renting. The length of rental is typically 7-10 days. If you would like more information, email 2023usopen@usga.org
