1.  SEEKING NEW HWPOA BOARD MEMBERS

Join the Board of Directors of
Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association

The HWPOA Board is seeking Holmby Westwood residents to volunteer to serve as a Director for 1 year. We usually meet on the second Tuesday of every month except for August and December. We ask only that you be a financially current member of the Association for the past 2 years and have an interest in maintaining and improving the quality of life we have all come to know and enjoy.

You will work with many neighbors who serve on the Board, some who have served for many years. This is a way to help your community, to work with city officials and departments, to plan events, and to support the protections in place today.

The Holmby Westwood community is over 80 years old and preservation, livability, and schools are key to its residential value. Serving on our Board of Directors is a way to safeguard one of the largest investments you will make in your lifetime.

We want the next generation to be able to carry on what we have fought to protect for these many years. Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association is a highly respected association throughout the city and, with your involvement, we hope that will continue indefinitely.

Our meetings are held at Belmont Village, Wilshire at Warner Ave., at 7:30 PM. Our committees include: Security, Parkway Tree Green Team, Traffic, Holmby Park, Architectural Supervising Committee, 4th of July event, Filming (in the neighborhood), WLAPD liaison and more.

You will have an extremely worthwhile experience while giving back to a community that has remained highly desirable for many years. That did not happen accidentally. It happened with a commitment from hundreds of our neighbors over 80 years!

Please contact Dana Glenn, our Office Manager, and let her know that you want to join our Board. Send an email to hwpoa@aol.com or call (310) 470-1785 to contact Dana. The deadline for submissions is April 7. We look forward to hearing from you!!

Many thanks,
Your HWPOA Board of Directors

2.  GROCERY SHOPPING – ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE

We now have a core of neighborhood residents who enthusiastically and immediately volunteered to go to the market for those who cannot go. We are so grateful to this neighborhood volunteer group.

Subject to modifications, these are the ways we will navigate the program.

  1. Each person should call Jackie Freedman at (310) 948-3630, between 10:00 a.m and 2:00 p.m., to get the name and phone number of the volunteer who will go to the market and deliver the food.
  2. Once you get the name and phone number of the volunteer assigned to you, call that person and give him/her your name, phone number and address.
  3. Do not order more than 12 items at the outset. We don’t want to overburden the volunteers with huge orders. So please figure out what you need.
  4. Once the volunteer has purchased the items, that person will call you with the total amount for reimbursement. The receipt will be included in the bag/s. Have a check made out to “Cash” or provide the actual cash in an envelope. Put that envelope under the front door mat or some other designated place you have discussed with the volunteer.
  5. When you need more items, contact the same person for your order.
  6. The volunteers may not be going to the market every day, so please call them a few days before you need the items. The volunteers will try to get what you want. Just note that sometimes the markets may run out of the exact item you may want.

We hope that these arrangements will run smoothly. If not, we will make adjustments. Call Jackie with questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Jackie Freedman and the HWPOA Food Volunteer Brigade

3.  SENIOR SHOPPING HOURS

Many local stores are listed in the following chart:

4.  HWPOA COMMITTEES & MEETINGS – POSTPONED

Due to the current “social distancing” restrictions that are in place, HWPOA has temporarily postponed all board meetings, committee meetings and activities.  We will let you know when we are able to meet again and resume regular operations.

5.  WESTWOOD VILLAGE PARKING

The Broxton Public Parking Structure is now open 24/7 and parking is free*.

For information on City of Los Angeles parking enforcement policy* please click here thewestwoodvillage.com. Note that parking meter restrictions remain in place to encourage turnover for pick-up and delivery needs.

* These policies are temporary measures.

6.  SUPPORT LOCAL RESTAURANTS – NEW & OLD

Help support local restaurants and their employees! Restaurant owners are sending out an SOS to Greater Los Angeles diners: Keep us in mind, and order takeout and delivery meals from your local establishments.  Here are a few local restaurants that would welcome your support:

Violet – New restaurant in Westwood Village
Violet Los Angeles is a new Cali-French bistro in the heart of Westwood Village (at 1121 Glendon).  The restaurant opened just a few days before the “stay at home” rules went into effect.  Several homeowners have recommended Violet and we want to help them gain their footing in the Village.  They offer pick-up or free delivery.  For menu and ordering instructions, go to https://violetla.com/menu/violet-to-you.

Delphi Greek
Delphi Greek is located at 1383 Westwood Blvd. (south of Wilshire).  They offer the best Greek food on the Westside, available for pick-up and delivery.  To see the menu, please click here: https://direct.chownow.com/order/191/locations/254

7.  SAFE GROCERY SHOPPING – VIDEO

The following video has some very helpful information regarding the safest practices for grocery shopping and how to lower the risk of getting COVID-19.  This video includes new CDC data, safe takeout food practices, and an updated practice for safe grocery shopping/handling.

Video – Safe Grocery Shopping

8.  ACTIVITIES & WAYS TO HELP

Applaud for Healthcare Workers – If you hear clapping and cheering at 8PM, it may be your neighbors joining the world-wide #WeApplaud movement to show appreciation for our front line healthcare workers & first responders during this viral pandemic – the folks putting their own lives at risk every day to keep us all safe.

So at 8:00 every night, open a window, stand on a terrace, porch, driveway or anywhere far away from others (6 feet or more) and clap and cheer for 1 minute to celebrate — here is what it looks and sounds like in Europe.

Teddy Bears & Rainbows for Kids – Have a spare Teddy Bear? Can you draw a Rainbow? Please consider putting a teddy bear or rainbow in a window facing the street so small children can play a safe, socially distanced scavenger hunt game while on their ‘fresh air’ walks with family.

Angeleno Fund – Angelenos looking to help neighbors hardest hit in the coronavirus pandemic can now contribute to the Angeleno Campaign to raise $10 million for cash assistance to local families.

Donate to food banks and volunteer to ensure our most vulnerable populations are still able to provide for their families. Much needed items include canned goods, peanut butter, toilet paper, antibacterial cleansers, and financial contributions.

Volunteer with the American Red Cross to help distribute meals to students affected by school closures or as a volunteer blood donor to address the current blood shortage.

9.  PASSOVER CATERING

Our Kosher Table (O.K.T.) is the in-house caterer for UCLA Hillel.  O.K.T. is proud to offer a wide range of kosher meals for Pesach, with a minimum order of just 4 people.

This delicious, stress-free complete Seder package can be picked up on April 7th or 8th curbside at Hillel. We are looking to make Passover safe and easy this year!

Don’t delay, order now! In order to provide our Passover Seder meal service, we must achieve 200 pre-orders by Sunday, March 29th.

https://www.ourkoshertable.com/passover

Passover Seder Packages are being offered for pick-up to households sheltering in place together and in no way encourages individuals to gather with people outside of their home.

1.  A NOTE FROM HWPOA

Dear Neighbors,

This is a difficult time for each of us and for our families and friends.  We have all had to learn a new way of living in a very short span of time.  We hope you are finding ways to adapt with minimal stress.

Please let us know if we can help.  We will try to be of assistance in any way that we can.

I do not anticipate, at this time, that the Board of Directors will meet in April and possibly, our Annual meeting in May will be postponed due to the continued precautions in place due to the Coronavirus outbreak.  I have asked Dana to work on our ’20 – ’21 Board of Directors election and to continue to send out membership renewals as they come due.  This is important as we try to maintain “business as usual” to the degree that we can.  All of our committees will address issues as they arise either by phone or online.

The climate is changing constantly.  Our foremost concern is the safety and well being of our community.  If you are in need, please contact Dana at 310-470-1785 or at hwpoa@aol.com

Be well!

Sandy Brown
President, Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association

3.  LAPD UPDATE ON COVID-19

A Note from Captain Jonathan Tom, LAPD Commanding Officer, West Los Angeles Area

It is not my intent to repeat what we are all being bombarded with 24 hours a day regarding COVID-19, but rather emphasize some of the things that will keep all of us safe and to reassure you that your City and your police department are doing everything we can to keep you safe in the communities where you live, work and engage in activities.

The LAPD and WLA has implemented several procedures to maximize our ability to answer calls for service, investigate crimes, provide service and maximize our ability to provide a continuity of operations. All of these changes are temporary and meant to ensure we are successful in our mission to safeguard your lives and property. To that end, we ask for your patience because some of these changes may impact the public.

7.  ONLINE EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

U.S. National Parks – Virtual  Tours
The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks is a new Google Arts & Culture exhibit and interactive documentary, timed to launch in celebration of this month’s NPS Centennial.

The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks

The exhibit allows you to take 360-degree tours of some of the most remote and beautiful U.S. National Parks. Instead of featuring much-documented vistas like Yosemite or the Grand Canyon, for example, the exhibit instead focuses on a selection of parks you may not have traveled to yet (or may never see), including the Kenai Fjords in Alaska, Hawaiian volcanoes, New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns, Utah’s Bryce Canyon, and Florida’s Dry Tortugas – the latter which was reviewed this month in a New York Times travel piece which called it an “under the radar” national park.

Watch Broadway Musicals Online – Free!
BroadwayHD, a theatre streaming service, hit the web in 2015 and quickly became a popular option for people to catch their favorite shows without having to flock to their nearest showing (probably at a far greater cost).

It’s priced at $8.99 per month or $99.99 for a full year – however, amid the surge of folks staying at home at the moment, the company has introduced a seven-day free trial (after which you’ll need to pick one of the affordable payment plans).

3.  GREEN TEAM COMMENTS ON SIDEWALKS LA PROGRAM

The letter below was prepared by the HWPOA Green Team and sent to the City of Los Angeles Public Works Department regarding the Sidewalk Repair Program Draft Environmental Impact Report.

The conflict between street trees and sidewalks is complicated. While sidewalk repair is important and necessary, the removal of trees should be considered with proper due process.  We hope this letter helps you understand what’s at stake and why what we do is so important.
