1.  HWPOA BOARD MEETING

On Tuesday, March 10 at 7:30 PM, the HWPOA Board of Directors will hold its monthly meeting*.  Please click here to see the agenda.

Members of the community are welcome to attend, though space is limited.

*NOTE – This meeting has been moved to a private residence.  Belmont Village has always been very gracious in allowing us the use of their facilities; however, out of an abundance of caution regarding the coronavirus, they have temporarily postponed all public events at their facilities.

2.  DAYLIGHT SAVINGS REMINDER

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour before you go to bed Saturday night, March 7. Daylight savings begins this Sunday, March 8! It’s time to “spring forward” – set your clocks forward one hour!

Daylight Saving Time is also a great time to check the things that keep us safe and ready for emergencies. It is a good time to replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, double check the expiration dates on your emergency kits and replace missing/expired items.

3.  L.A. MARATHON – STREET CLOSURES THIS SUNDAY

The Los Angeles Marathon will be held on Sunday, March 8. There will be numerous road closures across the city throughout the day. To see a map of the street closures, please click here:

5.  MOVIE PREMIERE – STREET CLOSURES

Hulu will be holding the Premiere of “Little Fires Everywhere”, at 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at the Regency Village Theater, located at 961 Broxton Avenue in Westwood Village.

There will be various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue.

6.  IGNITE LA – LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FOR YOUNG WOMEN

The Department of Neighborhood Empowerment is excited to announce the third round of IgniteLA, a program for young women that builds civic knowledge and leadership skills to bolster civic engagement.

Angelenas who complete the IgniteLA program will be ready to empower their neighborhood by actively engaging in the political process, listening to the perspectives of others, asserting and demonstrating their own beliefs in the public arena.

Who?
Young women between the ages of 14-24 who are interested in government and public service.

What?
IgniteLA is a non-partisan program whose mission is to empower every young woman interested in public service with the political and practical skills she needs to be a successful civic leader.

When?
Monday evenings from 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm April through May

Where?
IgniteLA will take place in 6 regional locations: the East and West Valley, West Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, Harbor, and Downtown Los Angeles.

Important Dates:

  • March 20th: Application  Deadline
  • March 30th: Decision Notifications Sent
  • Session Dates: April 13, 20, 27; May 4, 11, 18*
  • *May 18th Culmination Ceremony in Downtown Los Angeles

7.  UCLA BOTANICAL GARDEN – EVENTS

UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden is a 7.5 acre garden, outdoor classroom, and research facility on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles, California. This living museum contains a diverse collection of plants from around the world. Come explore this urban oasis, free to the public daily.

The Nest Amphitheater
Love, power, class, poetry, wit, music, tennis balls and yellow stockings: William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night’s got it all! Set in the homes of 1970s rich socialites, Viola assumes a new identity and hijinks ensue! We are happy to welcome back the Shakespeare Company at UCLA for two fantastic outdoor performances of the Twelfth Night. Learn more and RSVP here.

Drop-in Botanical Garden Tour
Saturday 3/7 1:00pm
UCLA La Kretz Garden Pavilion
Explore our living museum featuring collections of plants from around the globe! Join a docent for a free guided tour of the garden on the first Saturday of the month at 1pm. We’ll hear the stories of a selection of plants in the garden, and their relevance to human society. All ages are welcome. See you there! We will meet at the La Kretz Garden Pavilion, no RSVP needed.

8.  UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

Opening Night: Ramos Art Exhibition – Saturday, March 7, 6-9pm at 1137 Westwood Blvd. in Westwood’s Village Square. Ramos, as he’s known in the art world, is an incredibly talented painter, and we are honored to host his inaugural exhibition.  Opening Night is Saturday, March 7 from 6:00-9:00pm and will feature several series by Ramos in the ground floor showroom.  Free cocktails will be hosted by Somabar, accompanied by appetizers, beautiful art, and good company. Meet Peppa Pig – Sat. and Sun., March 14-15 at the Los Angeles Zoo. Jump in muddy puddles with Peppa Pig as she visits the Zoo for meet-and-greets with young fans on Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and 15. Meet-and-greets are free with a GLAZA membership or paid Zoo admission but require a reservation. Reserve your spot before it’s too late!

Tishan Hsu: Liquid Circuit – Open through April 19 at the Hammer Museum. Hsu’s first US museum survey reintroduces the work of this visionary artist to a contemporary audience. Tishan Hsu: Liquid Circuit is the New-York-based artist’s first museum survey exhibition in the United States. The exhibition traces Hsu’s key ideas and demonstrates how they clearly resonate in the works of younger artists coming of age today.  Click here for more information.

Paul McCarthy: Head Space, Drawings 1963–2019 – Open through May 10, 2020 at the Hammer Museum.  The first comprehensive survey in the United States of drawings and works on paper by the Los Angeles–based artist.  Click here for more information.
