4.  STOP THE SPREAD OF WEST NILE VIRUS

Last week, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported the season’s first death from West Nile Virus (WNV). The deceased was a resident of the San Fernando Valley.

Each year, hundreds of people in Los Angeles County are diagnosed with this infection, carried from birds to humans by mosquito bite.  Most mosquitoes do not carry the virus, but the bite of an infected mosquito can cause fever, rash, muscle aches, and fatigue. In severe cases it can lead to paralysis or even death. While everyone is at risk for WNV, people over 50 and those with pre-existing health problems are at greater risk.

We can all do our part to stop the spread of WNV by eliminating the stagnant water where mosquitoes lay their eggs.  A single teaspoon of standing water can breed hundreds of mosquitoes.  Please protect yourself, your family and your neighbors  by taking the following steps.

  • Remove standing water from clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, discarded tires, buckets, watering cans, the saucers under flower pots, or anything that holds water for more than a week.
  • Change the water in pet dishes, birdbaths, and other small containers weekly.
  • If you have an ornamental pond, stock it with insect-eating mosquitofish. You can get them for free from your local vector control district.
  • Make sure that swimming pools, spas, and ponds are properly maintained.
  • Wear EPA-recommended insect repellent when outdoors where mosquitoes may be present.

If you see a neglected (green) swimming pools or any accumulation of standing water too big for you to remove, call the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District at 562-944-9656 or online at www.glacvcd.org.

2.  COVID-19 ON THE RISE – TAKE PRECAUTIONS

After a relatively calm summer, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) is reporting a rise in measures of COVID-19 transmission for the fifth consecutive week.

The increase in COVID-19 circulation is likely the combined result of multiple factors, including summer travel, return to school, and the emergence of new COVID-19 variant strains.

To help mitigate the spread, Public Health is recommending that people who are at higher risk should consider common-sense precautions to protect against COVID infection. These protections include wearing a well-fitting high filtration mask when in poorly ventilated and/or crowded indoor spaces and on public transit, testing when symptomatic and/or after a known COVID-19 exposure, remaining home when sick, and seeking therapeutics if infected.

3.  L.A. COUNTY OCEAN WATER UPDATE

Immediately after the show the expert puppeteers will host a question and answer session with audience members. They will “pull back the curtain” to expose the rolling rack of puppets and show off their beautiful and elaborate hand-crafted marionettes to all of the assembled children, parents, and others.

As an extra special treat on a warm summer day, following the Q&A, every audience member will enjoy a frosty and delicious ice cream sundae cup (complete with a wooden spoon), exactly as it has been done after every performance at the actual Bob Baker Marionette Theater for the past 60 years.

This special children’s program is free for all, with free parking in the library garage. The Friends of Westwood Library are generously underwriting the entire cost of the event.

Broxton Nights: Markers’ Market + Pop-Up Skate
Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm
on Broxton Ave. in Westwood Village

Sponsored by the Westwood Village Improvement Assoc. (WVIA)

On the 2nd Saturday of each month, we’re hosting a pop-up market on Broxton Ave in Westwood Village. Stroll or roll through for dinner, stick around to shop for handmade gifts from local artisans, and roller skate.

Each month, our pop-up will have a theme. For September 9th, we are partnering with the LA Skate Hunnies to bring you a Roller Disco and free skate lessons. Free roller skate rentals will be available from The Basics of Happy, and the Soundbox Truck will provide music and vibes.

Discover an evening market by Farm Habit, showcasing artisan treasures, crafts, and mouthwatering treats. Let’s create unforgettable memories and spread positivity throughout our community. Don’t miss the magic – come skate, shop, and mingle with us!
