2.  COVID-19 ON THE RISE – TAKE PRECAUTIONS

After a relatively calm summer, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) is reporting a rise in measures of COVID-19 transmission for the fifth consecutive week.

The increase in COVID-19 circulation is likely the combined result of multiple factors, including summer travel, return to school, and the emergence of new COVID-19 variant strains.

To help mitigate the spread, Public Health is recommending that people who are at higher risk should consider common-sense precautions to protect against COVID infection. These protections include wearing a well-fitting high filtration mask when in poorly ventilated and/or crowded indoor spaces and on public transit, testing when symptomatic and/or after a known COVID-19 exposure, remaining home when sick, and seeking therapeutics if infected.

3.  L.A. COUNTY OCEAN WATER UPDATE

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health cautions residents who are planning to visit the below Westside beaches to avoid swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters:

  • Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey – The entire swim area.
  • Pico-Kenter storm drain at Santa Monica State Beach – 100 yards up and down the coast from the storm drain.
  • Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica – 100 yards up and down the coast from the pier.
  • Windward storm drain at Venice City Beach – 100 yards up and down the coast from the storm drain.

6.  ACTIVITIES & THINGS TO DO

Kara Walker: Selections from the Hammer Contemporary Collection
Closes Sunday, Sept. 3
at the Hammer Museum

Don’t miss your last chance to see Kara Walker’s immense painting in the round, The Battle of Atlanta: Being the Narrative of a Negress in the Flames of Desire—A Reconstruction (1995). Recasting the famous battle of 1864 using seventeen paper cutouts, Walker builds an intricate diorama using the silhouette to cast shadows on conventional thinking about race representation in the context of discrimination, exclusion, sexual desire, and love.

Bob Baker Marionette Theater
Sunday, September 10th at 2:30 p.m.
at the Westwood Branch Library

L.A.’s legendary Bob Baker Marionette Theater will make a special “traveling roadshow” appearance at the Westwood Branch Library on Sunday, September 10th at 2:30 p.m. with a free children’s puppet show, featuring their enchanting barnyard production, “Something to Crow About!”

Presented by the Friends of Westwood Library, this musical “day-on-the-farm” is one of the most iconic shows in the 60-year history of the puppet theater. It is “the Original Bob Baker Musical Spectacular.”

Immediately after the show the expert puppeteers will host a question and answer session with audience members. They will “pull back the curtain” to expose the rolling rack of puppets and show off their beautiful and elaborate hand-crafted marionettes to all of the assembled children, parents, and others.

As an extra special treat on a warm summer day, following the Q&A, every audience member will enjoy a frosty and delicious ice cream sundae cup (complete with a wooden spoon), exactly as it has been done after every performance at the actual Bob Baker Marionette Theater for the past 60 years.

This special children’s program is free for all, with free parking in the library garage. The Friends of Westwood Library are generously underwriting the entire cost of the event.
