UPDATE – Protest in Westwood & Curfew

Planned Protest in Westwood – Monday

HWPOA has been informed that the planned protest beginning at the Wilshire Federal Building has changed its start time to 2:00 PM on Monday, June 1, 2020.

Please avoid Westwood and the surrounding area and use caution for your commute and errands.

Curfew

The County and City of Los Angeles have instituted a curfew again tonight (Sunday) beginning at 6:00 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Monday morning.  The curfew requires people within the City of Los Angeles to stay indoors tonight.

Message from LAPD

We received the following information from the Brentwood Homeowners Assoc. (BHA).  Members of the BHA spoke Sunday evening to Captain Tom of WLAPD:

  • The National Guard has been deployed to Century City Mall and Westwood Village.
  • Officers are in the field chasing what Captain Tom described as “professional criminals looking for opportunities,” and LAPD is overwhelmed. Because of this deployment, a minimum number of officers are answering 911 calls.

Please Stay Safe

Homeowners should secure their homes and lock cars, as always. Everyone should take the curfew seriously and remember they are safest in their homes.

Planned Protest in Westwood – Monday

HWPOA has been informed of a planned protest beginning at the Wilshire Federal Building beginning at 4:00 PM on Monday, June 1, 2020.  We do not know who organized the protest or how many people are expected to participate.

Curfew in Downtown LA

In addition, Mayor Garcetti just announced the following:

We will always protect free speech and Angelenos’ right to live without fear of violence or vandalism. To increase safety for demonstrators, law enforcement and all citizens of Los Angeles, we are putting a curfew in place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Currently, the curfew will apply to downtown Los Angeles between the 110 fwy on the west, Alameda on the east, and 10 fwy on the south, and 101 fwy on the north between 8 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

Please Stay Safe

Based on current events in Los Angeles and around the country, we urge you to take appropriate cautions in this time of unrest.

2.  L.A. COUNTY – WHAT’S OPEN

Earlier this week, LA County announced a new Health Officer Order that allows for the resumption of faith-based services, in-store shopping at low-risk retail stores, drive-in movies and other recreational activities.

This does NOT yet include personal services like hair salons, nail salons, and barbershops. It also does NOT yet allow for dine-in services at restaurants.

LA County’s Department of Public Health has prepared a helpful list of what’s open (or not) in LA County.  Click link below:

What’s Open in LA County

Note – Physical distancing requirements, cloth face coverings and other safety protocols must be observed.

3.  WEAR A FACE COVERING – PLEASE!

The most important way to make sure things continue to improve is for everyone to strictly adhere to the City’s face covering rules when they leave their homes and will be near other people. It is the single most important barrier to aid in the fight against COVID-19. Wearing a mask is even more important as retail and business restrictions are gradually eased.

The future of our collective health and well-being is up to all of us. Stay safe, stay home as much as possible, and wear your mask when you leave your home.

Sincerely,
City Councilmember Paul Koretz

5.  RESTAURANT RECOMMENDATIONS

Neighborhood residents have sent us the following restaurant recommendations for takeout and delivery. If you would like to recommend a local restaurant, please send your comments to hwpoa@aol.com.

  • La Bruschetta – Family owned, delicious Italian fare and reasonably priced.
  • Westwood Thai Cafe – Large menu.  Food is tasty with large portions.  Not as hot as real Thai but good and inexpensive.
  • Toranj Restaurant on Lindbrook – Mediterranean.  As good as any Persian restaurant in the area. Inexpensive.
  • House of Meatballs on Gayley – Great tofu balls in marinara and Spaghetti Bolognese. Caesar salad is good too.

6.  THE YMCA NEEDS YOUR HELP

Dear HW Neighbors,

With this unprecedented health crisis, the YMCA (located on Westgate at Uni Hi School) has been “forced to pivot in ways in which we have not planned.”  Since its’ mission is to help others, they are providing showers, towels, food, water, clothing and other necessities to the most vulnerable neighbors.  They have asked for both financial help for administrative costs to maintain the program, as well as the continued purchase of items.  Our HWPOA Board of Directors recently voted to contribute $500. as part of our yearly charitable donations to the YMCA for use during this pandemic.  Comstock Hills HOA also contributed the same and Westwood HOA will be asking board members to join in.

I have attached both letters received from the Y in the event that you or your family would like to help.

If you have questions, please contact us at hwpoa@aol.com or (310) 470-1785.

Thank you.  Please stay safe, wear a mask, and continue to social distance.

Sandy Brown, HWPOA President

3.  SKATEBOARDERS TRESPASSING

A homeowner on Weyburn Ave. reported the following incident:

On Wednesday, May 13 at 6:30 two men cased our property, taking pictures and then one came up the side yard. I confronted him and he said he is looking for good skate boarding. I told him to leave and called the police. I filed a trespassing report. A police detective said that skate boarders are out and trespassing other people’s homes in our area. The silver midsize car they were driving had Texas license plates GSN 5438. If you see these approximately 30 yr old men, call Det. Davis 310-444-1522.

4.  HONORING 2020 GRADUATES

  • Pomodoro Bistro on Westwood Bl. has long been a family favorite

Scams continue to be on the rise. Don’t fall victim to these impostors. We have suspended disconnections for non-payment at this time and will NEVER call and threaten to shut-off your water and power service over the phone.

Stay alert!

7.  SURVEY – CITY COMMUNICATIONS

Dear Neighbors:

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us all how important information sharing is in our communities. It’s how we learn what services are available, who is providing them and, now, what parts of our economy and society are reopening. But communication is too often a one-way street.

I want to change that and hear from you about the information you receive from the government of the City of Los Angeles and what local issues spark your interest. Please take this brief survey and forward it to your friends: https://bit.ly/2XhKjIb.

Your responses will help improve the way we communicate with you.

Be well and stay safe!

2.  HWPOA’S JULY 4th EVENT – CANCELED

As with so many events that were scheduled during the pandemic and into the summer months, we are sorry to report that Holmby Westwood’s July 4th Parade and Picnic has been canceled.

We know that many of our families looked forward to our annual event, dressing up in red, white and blue, decorating bikes and strollers, playing in the bouncies, and spending time with neighbors and friends.  Esther Magna and her team, the many sponsors and volunteers will be greatly missed!  We hope to celebrate the 4th with you next year!

3.  HOLMBY PARK – DOGS OFF-LEASH

In the late afternoons, Holmby Park has been inundated with people (many of whom do not wear face masks) who let their dogs roam and play off-leash.  This behavior is unsafe for other people and other dogs.

Park Rangers have been alerted and will be patrolling the park to issue citations to individuals that have been violating the dog off leash issue.

4.  HONORING 2020 GRADUATES

6.  HAZARDOUS & ELECTRONIC WASTE DISPOSAL

From the LA Dept. of Sanitation:

Dear Angelenos,

We come to you again asking for your kind assistance.  Our SAFE Centers are closed due to COVID-19, but household hazardous waste (HHW) such as paint, lightbulbs, batteries, chemicals and electronic waste (e-waste) such as televisions, VCRs, phones, etc. continue to pile up outside their gates, causing health and safety hazards.

Until we are able to re-open our SAFE Centers, we ask that you please store HHW safely at your home.  If you have e-waste, you can schedule a free curbside collection by calling our 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489 or by using the MyLA311 app.

Note that it not legal to place these items in trash or recycling.  Doing so could cause fires in landfills or our collection trucks; it could also lead to chemicals leaching into groundwater.

Thank you so much for helping us to keep our communities safe and healthy.  As always, if you need us, please call us 24/7 at 1-800-773-2489.

7.  BLOOD DONATIONS NEEDED

The UCLA Blood & Platelet Center is experiencing a critical blood shortage and urgently needs donations from all blood types, especially type O. Eligible donors are urged to donate.

The essential blood components available for patients is at an historic low! Help our patients by scheduling a lifesaving blood donation at the UCLA Blood & Platelet Center. Please spread the word and encourage your family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors to support this crucial need.

3.  MODIFICATIONS TO “SAFER AT HOME”

Recovery Begins:
Some Non-Essential Businesses to Re-Open

Mayor Garcetti, together with L.A. County, announced that the City will begin the process of slow and gradual adjustments to the Safer at Home order.

Starting May 8th, florists, toy stores, music stores, bookstores, clothing and sporting goods stores may offer curbside pickup only. Car dealership showrooms are also permitted to open.

Starting May 9th, Angelenos can return to golf courses, trailhead parks and trails — except Runyon Canyon, which will remain closed. Face coverings are required for anyone using trails or golf courses.

And starting May 11th, all riders on DASH, Commuter Express, and Cityride buses will be required to wear protective face coverings. In addition, all travelers at LAX will be required to wear face coverings to help us save lives and slow the spread of COVID-19.

The gradual relaxing of restrictions will require the patience, persistence and partnership of residents, businesses, workers, government representatives, and public health officials. Because until there is a vaccine or effective treatment, COVID-19 will remain a threat to everyone. You still need to stay home, wear face coverings, and refrain from gatherings with anyone who doesn’t live in your home. These measures remain as important as ever.

To learn more, including about the public health indicators that will drive decision-making about when to loosen or tighten restrictions over the coming year, see the Safer L.A. website.

4.  NEW COVID-19 RESOURCE HUB

To help Los Angeles residents and businesses get through the coronavirus pandemic, L.A. Controller Ron Galperin released a comprehensive COVID-19 Resource Hub that gathers the latest federal, state and local data, information and services.

The hub includes a dashboard illustrating the impact of the coronavirus on L.A. neighborhoods, along with a map showing how stimulus checks will be distributed locally, and contains hundreds of resources organized into 16 categories — for employees and job seekers, freelancers, renters, small business owners, immigrants and much more.

GROUP FOR PEOPLE WITH A CHRONIC LUNG CONDITION

I host a meeting every other month for people with chronic lung conditions other than TB or cancer. It’s a very informal support and information group, free of charge, which has been ongoing for about 15 years. The meetings bring together people who all share a common health problem, so we can feel completely comfortable talking about our lung issues in a warm, supportive environment. Each of us has a history of diagnosis, treatment, and day-to-day experience that is very helpful for answering our questions and getting the benefit of people’s personal experience. Even with the best of doctors, this is an invaluable service.

We are affiliated with a national non-profit organization, NTM Info & Research (NTMir), formed on behalf of patients with pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease for the purpose of patient support, medical education, and research. The organization comprises patients, physicians and other medical practitioners, and researchers.

Our group is open to all and we usually meet at my house in Westwood. However, under the current circumstances, we’ve moved the meeting to a virtual home on Zoom. The next meeting will be on Monday, May 11, at 2:30 p.m. Here is the information to access the meeting. You shouldn’t need a meeting ID, but in case you do, I’ve included it.

80% OFF women’s luxury clothing!  Worth New York is going out of business and I have over 300 pieces in all sizes (X0-XLG, 0-16) at my home in Little Holmby.  Of course during this time, it is not possible for you to shop in person and try them on, but I have been doing 10-minute FaceTime shopping appointments, where I can show you what is available, and discuss the style and sizing.  It’s fun, easy and there are GREAT BARGAINS!  Leather and suede jackets, cashmere sweaters, blazers and blouses, summer tops that are great with jeans and cotton pants! Don’t forget Mother’s Day is Sunday!

If you’re ready for a little “retail therapy,” give me a call or email me…I’m happy to send photos, too!  Denise Barta: 310-721-2500; dbarta@worthnewyork.com

1.  FREE COVID-19 TESTING

The City of Los Angeles, in partnership with the County of Los Angeles and CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort), is providing free COVID-19 testing to ALL Los Angeles County residents, whether or not you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

Priority for the same or next day testing is still given to people with symptoms, such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, muscle pain, headaches, sore throat, or a new loss of sense of smell.

Testing is also prioritized for certain critical front-line workers who interact with the public while working.

Schedule a COVID-19 Test

Testing is by appointment only.  The nearest test locations are at the VA Parking Lot and at Cedars-Sinai.  Here is a first-hand account of someone who was recently tested at the VA:

We arrived in line on Sepulveda and s…l…o…w…l…y made our way to the testing position. The test took 2 minutes; total time from line-up to pull out—2 hours and 15 minutes! I am sure it will get shorter as the demand is reduced, and they are doing their best. Everyone testing and in line was very polite.  If you sign up for a test, you should watch the video of the procedure online at the time you make the reservation. Results by e-mail in 2-4 days.

2.  WESTSIDE VIRTUAL TOWN HALL – COVID-19

Join Congressman Ted Lieu, City Councilmember Mike Bonin and State Senator Ben Allen on May 6 at 5:30 PM for a Virtual Town Hall for residents of the Westside. We’ll be discussing updates and resources available to you during the coronavirus pandemic.

3.  L.A. ANIMAL SERVICES – FOSTER OR ADOPT A PET

Although we are closed to the public due to COVID-19, we are still getting animals in as our Officers find lost and injured animals in the community. We need to make space for these orphaned and abandoned animals in our Animal Services Centers.

The West LA Animal Shelter still has a number of dogs remaining at the shelter and are looking for foster families or adopters.

We are under a City directive not to have more than 50 people assembled in our Centers, including staff. That is why we had to suspend volunteering at this time so we need help from the community more than ever.

If you want to foster or adopt an animal, please click here for more information.

4.  PLEASE GIVE BLOOD

The UCLA Blood & Platelet Center is experiencing a significant impact on the blood supply due to cancellations of blood drives and fewer donors on campus. If you are healthy and able, please consider scheduling an appointment to help patients counting on lifesaving blood throughout this pandemic.

For more information or to make an appointment at a UCLA blood donation center, please visit www.uclahealth.org/gotblood/

Similarly, Cedars-Sinai provides nearly 60,000 blood products to patients yearly.  In addition, plasma donations from individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 may be useful in treating patients with COVID-19.  Please visit, https://www.cedars-sinai.org/programs/blood-donor-services.html to find out more about mobile or Cedars-Sinai blood donation center appointments.

5.  CALIFORNIANS FOR ALL

As we continue to stay home and save lives, we can find more ways to safely support our community. Governor Newsom recently announced a new #CaliforniansForAll service initiative to connect Californians with safe volunteer opportunities. Through #CaliforniansForAll, you can volunteer to help those in need by supporting local food banks and shelters, delivering meals to seniors, donating blood, and more. To sign up to volunteer, go to californiansforall.ca.gov.

6.  MOTHERS DAY – SHOP LOCAL

With Mothers Day coming up and most retail stores closed, we want to remind you that some local options are still open for business:

Sarah Leonard Jewelers – As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, we are following the City of Los Angeles requirements and guidelines to temporarily close.  While our doors are locked and the jewelry safe in the vault, we are welcoming your calls and emails so we can still help you celebrate.  We are able to assist with your special orders and to ship those important gifts you may need.  This year, perhaps more than ever, it’s meaningful to celebrate friendship, family, and most of all, love.

Westwood Flower Garden – Please call for specific requests and to flower availability.  Call us for the best selection at 310-208-4000 Open for pick ups and Delivery for Mother’s Day, Sunday May 10th!  We are located at 1087 Gayley in Westwood Village.

7.  ACTIVITIES & THINGS TO DO

Hammer Museum’s Lunchtime Art Talks – Wednesday, May 6 at 12:30 PM.  While the museum is temporarily closed, Lunchtime Art Talks take place online every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. The Hammer’s curatorial department leads free, insightful, short discussions about works of art from the Hammer’s collection.

The talk on Wed., May 6 is Lorna Simpson’s Backdrops Circa 1940s (1999), led by Vanessa Arizmendi, curatorial assistant.

This live, online program will not be recorded. RSVP here to receive an email reminder with the link to join on the day of the program. The link will also be posted to this webpage two hours before the program.
