1.  COVID-19 UPDATES

LETTER FROM PAUL KORETZ
City Councilmember Paul Koretz is asking everyone to continue to observe the Stay-at-Home Order and practice social distancing precautions. Read the full letter below:

Koretz Letter Regarding Safety Protocols

FACE COVERINGS – REQUIRED WHEN LEAVING HOME
Mayor Eric Garcetti has issued an order requiring Angelenos to wear face coverings outside their homes. Visit Coronavirus.LACity.org/FaceCovering for more details, including exceptions for small children or those with disabilities.

RE-OPENING BUSINESSES & RECREATION FACILITIES
A County Public Health Officer has issued a new order impacting an expanded list of recreational facilities, retail businesses and manufacturers. A few highlights from Wednesday’s order include:

  1. Retailers. All retailers are allowed to open for doorside pickup – except those in indoor shopping centers and indoor malls.  Remember: this order allows for curbside pickup or delivery ONLY. The public is not allowed inside.
  1. Recreational Spaces/Facilities. The following are allowed to reopen with appropriate protocols: 1) Beaches, 2) Tennis & Pickleball Courts, 3) Equestrian Centers, 4) Community Gardens, and 5) Bike Parks.

BEACH RULES

  • Only individual or family exercises and activities will be allowed, such as walking, running, swimming or surfing.
  • Face coverings will be required out of the water & around others.
  • NO: sunbathing, chairs, canopies, coolers, picnicking, sitting or lying on the sand.
  • NO Biking: bike paths, piers & boardwalks remain closed.
  • NO: group sports (such as Volleyball), gatherings or events.

Please continue to practice physical distancing, wear a face covering and wash or sanitize your hands while out in public. And if you can stay home – stay home. Help save lives.

2.  HWPOA’S JULY 4th EVENT – CANCELED

As with so many events that were scheduled during the pandemic and into the summer months, we are sorry to report that Holmby Westwood’s July 4th Parade and Picnic has been canceled.

We know that many of our families looked forward to our annual event, dressing up in red, white and blue, decorating bikes and strollers, playing in the bouncies, and spending time with neighbors and friends.  Esther Magna and her team, the many sponsors and volunteers will be greatly missed!  We hope to celebrate the 4th with you next year!

3.  HOLMBY PARK – DOGS OFF-LEASH

In the late afternoons, Holmby Park has been inundated with people (many of whom do not wear face masks) who let their dogs roam and play off-leash.  This behavior is unsafe for other people and other dogs.

Park Rangers have been alerted and will be patrolling the park to issue citations to individuals that have been violating the dog off leash issue.

4.  HONORING 2020 GRADUATES

With so many graduation ceremonies and events canceled this year, HWPOA would like to honor and celebrate the 2020 graduates in our neighborhood.  If you have a graduate in your family (high school, middle school, college, elementary school, etc.) please let us know who they are.  We will recognize them in an upcoming edition of the Holmby News.

If you would like your graduate to be included, please send an email to hwpoa@aol.com with the following information (or as much of it as you would like to share):

  • Graduate’s name (or just first name if you wish)
  • One photo (jpeg) of the Graduate
  • School and grade level
  • What’s next – College/major, next school, etc.

The deadline for submissions is Thursday, May 21.

6.  HAZARDOUS & ELECTRONIC WASTE DISPOSAL

From the LA Dept. of Sanitation:

Dear Angelenos,

We come to you again asking for your kind assistance.  Our SAFE Centers are closed due to COVID-19, but household hazardous waste (HHW) such as paint, lightbulbs, batteries, chemicals and electronic waste (e-waste) such as televisions, VCRs, phones, etc. continue to pile up outside their gates, causing health and safety hazards.

Until we are able to re-open our SAFE Centers, we ask that you please store HHW safely at your home.  If you have e-waste, you can schedule a free curbside collection by calling our 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489 or by using the MyLA311 app.

Note that it not legal to place these items in trash or recycling.  Doing so could cause fires in landfills or our collection trucks; it could also lead to chemicals leaching into groundwater.

Thank you so much for helping us to keep our communities safe and healthy.  As always, if you need us, please call us 24/7 at 1-800-773-2489.

7.  BLOOD DONATIONS NEEDED

The UCLA Blood & Platelet Center is experiencing a critical blood shortage and urgently needs donations from all blood types, especially type O. Eligible donors are urged to donate.

The essential blood components available for patients is at an historic low! Help our patients by scheduling a lifesaving blood donation at the UCLA Blood & Platelet Center. Please spread the word and encourage your family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors to support this crucial need.
