2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

CONSTRUCTION/REMODEL SITE BURGLARIES AND THEFTS

There has been a trend of Construction Site Burglaries and thefts developing in the Westwood area. The suspects are targeting construction and home remodel sites during the evening and night time hours or on weekends when the contractors and workers are not on site. Construction tools, equipment, appliances, and other valuables are being targeted and stolen. In cases where the tools and equipment have been secured in a steel lock box or connex storage container, the suspects have used cutting equipment or blow torches to cut into the secured metal containers to access the tools. In light of this trend the Los Angeles Police Department is making the following recommendations.

REMOVE ALL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FROM THE JOB SITE AT THE END OF THE WORK DAY. IF THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE THEN CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS:

ALARMS: Security Alarms should be installed on any structures or containers securing any tools and equipment.

  • AFTER HOURS SECURITY: Consider hiring a private security guard to monitor the site after hours and on weekends when there are no contractors or workers present.
  • SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS: Web based surveillance camera systems will allow homeowners and contractors to view and monitor activity from any smartphone or computer which are motion sensor activated and will alert your device when there is after hours activity. They also lend valuable information and clues to the investigation.
  • GATES: Ensure that all gates and access points to the construction site are locked and secured with heavy duty pad locks and chains.
  • LIGHTING: Ensure that appropriate flood lighting or motion sensor lighting is in place during the hours of darkness.
  • NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: Most construction burglaries are occurring in residential neighborhoods. Should neighbors of a residential construction site observe suspicious activities, CONTACT THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY! Should the activity escalate to what you believe to be a crime about to occur, crime in progress or crime that just occurred, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!

IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THE CONSTRUCTION BURGLARY TREND OR ANY OTHER CRIME, PLEASE CONTACT WEST LOS ANGELES BURGLARY DETECTIVES AT (310) 444-1522 OR 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) OR lacrimestoppers.org.

3.  WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL – PLEASE VOTE

Vote to support the Westwood Neighborhood Council

It is important to Holmby Westwood that you get your applications in to the City Clerk so that you can receive a ballot and vote “No” on dividing our community and handing Westwood Village over to the students so they can get “places to dance, listen to live music, or play pool….”.    We want a Village that serves everyone and it is a balance we must maintain.

To get a vote-by-mail ballot for this election, fill out this application: https://clerkappsele.lacity.org/vbmreg/#/vbm

Or if you wish to apply via regular mail, contact the homeowner office at hwpoa@aol.com or 310-470-1785 and we will get a hard copy application and stamped envelope to you so that you can fill it out and send it to the City Clerk.

All of the Westwood homeowner associations will be voting as well.  We look forward to a great response!

Many thanks!

Sandy Brown
President, HWPOA

5.  SAFE PARKING FOR VETERANS

We at VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) are committed to providing high-quality, safe and compassionate care to our Veterans.  Many homeless Veterans are currently living in their vehicles both on campus and in the community. We know that Veterans are more empowered to engage in services when they have a secure place to sleep without fear of relocation, citations or predatory activity. VA is grateful to be able to partner with Safe Parking L.A. to afford eligible Veterans an opportunity to sleep safely in their vehicles on the West L.A. campus, thereby facilitating access to the supportive services necessary to complete their transition into permanent housing.

The arrangement will start small with approximately 10 parking spaces but may grow as demand increases. VA remains committed to revitalizing the campus to a 21st Century, state-of-the-art home for our Veterans.  For questions or additional information, please contact VHAGLAMasterPlan@va.gov.

Put this number in your cell phone contacts. Do not be afraid to call the police with any questions or concerns. Call 911 for a real emergency or a crime in progress.

3.  SUBWAY CONSTRUCTION: LIVING WITH DISRUPTION

Written by Mark Rogo, HWPOA member, Board of Directors:

The Purple Line subway extension is about to hit you square in the face.  Over the next six years you are going to experience disruption and traffic jams.  You will change the way you plan your evening outside of your home or condo as well as what route you take to return home. The subway is coming, scheduled to start service in March of 2026.

Beginning this week and for two years, the infrastructure work will begin along Wilshire Blvd, generally between Veteran and Malcolm.  Something in the area of 14 utility, telecom, drain and other lines will be replaced to avoid conflicts with the incoming subway construction.

What does this mean for you?  A lot. It’s the beginning of two years of Wilshire Blvd lane closures at night and weekends.  Monday thru Thursday from 9:00pm to 6:00am, and Friday 9:00pm all the way through to 6:00am Monday morning, in multiple stages.

Living with Disruption During Subway Construction

4.  PARKING VIOLATIONS & NEIGHBOR COURTESY

It has been brought to our attention that some neighbors pay strict attention to the parking signs on their street.  Occasionally, residents park in violation of those signs and are ticketed in front of their own house or in close proximity.  We have been asked to suggest that residents be approached and asked to move their car rather than calling parking enforcement to have their cars ticketed.  This seems to be a good way to maintain a friendly community.

LA does have a 72 hour parking limit for any car with a preferential parking permit regardless of where it is on the street.  If it is in the same place after 72 hours and has not been moved, parking enforcement will chalk the tire and ticket.  This can occur even when you are parked in front of your house.  See:

City of Los Angeles: Parking Violations Bureau

5.  NEW AND SAFER MAIL BOXES

From Brentwood Homeowners Assoc.:

Thanks to a two year campaign for better and safer mailboxes and alerts to the Postmaster and Congressman Lieu’s office about the problems with mail theft, the Barrington Post Office has finally installed a better tamper-proof box. We’re hoping to see more soon IF these prove effective.

6.  TRAFFIC APPS (WAZE) – NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERNS

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

Mobile traffic applications such as Waze are causing a dangerous flood of traffic to be funneled onto tiny Los Angeles side streets, and the city should develop ways to curb the apps from diverting drivers off of major thoroughfares, a Los Angeles city councilman said Wednesday.

“Residents in my district and throughout the city have experienced a major surge in dangerous and disruptive cut-through traffic in recent years,” said Paul Krekorian, who represents parts of the San Fernando Valley, including Studio City and North Hollywood.

“Mobile app makers are sacrificing the quality of life in our neighborhoods, just so drivers can save a few seconds or minutes with an alternate route,” he said. “We have an obligation to see what can be done to protect our neighborhoods and prevent these apps from continuing to divert drivers from major avenues onto small residential streets that aren’t designed to accommodate high-volume traffic.”
