1.  FREE COVID-19 TESTING

The City of Los Angeles, in partnership with the County of Los Angeles and CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort), is providing free COVID-19 testing to ALL Los Angeles County residents, whether or not you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

Priority for the same or next day testing is still given to people with symptoms, such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, muscle pain, headaches, sore throat, or a new loss of sense of smell.

Testing is also prioritized for certain critical front-line workers who interact with the public while working.

Schedule a COVID-19 Test

Testing is by appointment only.  The nearest test locations are at the VA Parking Lot and at Cedars-Sinai.  Here is a first-hand account of someone who was recently tested at the VA:

We arrived in line on Sepulveda and s…l…o…w…l…y made our way to the testing position. The test took 2 minutes; total time from line-up to pull out—2 hours and 15 minutes! I am sure it will get shorter as the demand is reduced, and they are doing their best. Everyone testing and in line was very polite.  If you sign up for a test, you should watch the video of the procedure online at the time you make the reservation. Results by e-mail in 2-4 days.

2.  WESTSIDE VIRTUAL TOWN HALL – COVID-19

Join Congressman Ted Lieu, City Councilmember Mike Bonin and State Senator Ben Allen on May 6 at 5:30 PM for a Virtual Town Hall for residents of the Westside. We’ll be discussing updates and resources available to you during the coronavirus pandemic.

3.  L.A. ANIMAL SERVICES – FOSTER OR ADOPT A PET

Although we are closed to the public due to COVID-19, we are still getting animals in as our Officers find lost and injured animals in the community. We need to make space for these orphaned and abandoned animals in our Animal Services Centers.

The West LA Animal Shelter still has a number of dogs remaining at the shelter and are looking for foster families or adopters.

We are under a City directive not to have more than 50 people assembled in our Centers, including staff. That is why we had to suspend volunteering at this time so we need help from the community more than ever.

If you want to foster or adopt an animal, please click here for more information.

4.  PLEASE GIVE BLOOD

The UCLA Blood & Platelet Center is experiencing a significant impact on the blood supply due to cancellations of blood drives and fewer donors on campus. If you are healthy and able, please consider scheduling an appointment to help patients counting on lifesaving blood throughout this pandemic.

For more information or to make an appointment at a UCLA blood donation center, please visit www.uclahealth.org/gotblood/

Similarly, Cedars-Sinai provides nearly 60,000 blood products to patients yearly.  In addition, plasma donations from individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 may be useful in treating patients with COVID-19.  Please visit, https://www.cedars-sinai.org/programs/blood-donor-services.html to find out more about mobile or Cedars-Sinai blood donation center appointments.

5.  CALIFORNIANS FOR ALL

As we continue to stay home and save lives, we can find more ways to safely support our community. Governor Newsom recently announced a new #CaliforniansForAll service initiative to connect Californians with safe volunteer opportunities. Through #CaliforniansForAll, you can volunteer to help those in need by supporting local food banks and shelters, delivering meals to seniors, donating blood, and more. To sign up to volunteer, go to californiansforall.ca.gov.

6.  MOTHERS DAY – SHOP LOCAL

With Mothers Day coming up and most retail stores closed, we want to remind you that some local options are still open for business:

Sarah Leonard Jewelers – As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, we are following the City of Los Angeles requirements and guidelines to temporarily close.  While our doors are locked and the jewelry safe in the vault, we are welcoming your calls and emails so we can still help you celebrate.  We are able to assist with your special orders and to ship those important gifts you may need.  This year, perhaps more than ever, it’s meaningful to celebrate friendship, family, and most of all, love.

Westwood Flower Garden – Please call for specific requests and to flower availability.  Call us for the best selection at 310-208-4000 Open for pick ups and Delivery for Mother’s Day, Sunday May 10th!  We are located at 1087 Gayley in Westwood Village.

7.  ACTIVITIES & THINGS TO DO

Hammer Museum’s Lunchtime Art Talks – Wednesday, May 6 at 12:30 PM.  While the museum is temporarily closed, Lunchtime Art Talks take place online every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. The Hammer’s curatorial department leads free, insightful, short discussions about works of art from the Hammer’s collection.

The talk on Wed., May 6 is Lorna Simpson’s Backdrops Circa 1940s (1999), led by Vanessa Arizmendi, curatorial assistant.
