2.  EARTHQUAKE ALERTS – MYSHAKE APP

Did you feel the 5.1 earthquake last Sunday?  Did you receive an advanced alert?

The MyShake App sent a warning to mobile phone users about 5-10 seconds before the shaking occurred.  Users received an “Amber Alert” type of noise on their phones, followed by a visual warning and an announcement that said, “Earthquake! Drop, Cover, Hold On!  Shaking Expected”.

MyShake sends notices for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater.  In addition, MyShake offers information regarding earthquake preparedness, survival and recovery.

MyShake Website

NOTE: ShakeAlertLA was previously used by the City of LA for earthquake alerts.  However, ShakeAlertLA will no longer send earthquake alerts to users after December 31, 2020. Residents who want to receive earthquake early warning notifications should download the MyShake app.

3.  FREE CERT TRAINING – DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers are trained in basic disaster response skills such as:

  • Fire safety
  • Light search and rescue
  • Team organization
  • Disaster medical operations

You will learn how to prepare for emergencies, what supplies you should have in your house, how much food, how much water but most importantly, how to protect your family and community in an emergency!

NATIONAL CINEMA DAY 2023
Sunday, August 27
at various movie theaters

What’s the only thing stopping us from seeing Barbenheimer over and over again? Ticket prices. But thankfully on August 27, National Cinema Day will return with $4 movie tickets at theaters large and small for both new releases and some old favorites that are returning to the big screen just for the weekend.

BLACKLIST: THE HOLLYWOOD RED SCARE
Now through Sept. 3
at the Skirball Cultural Center

Pundits and politicians may cry wolf about censorship these days, but decades ago the government actually pushed the entertainment industry into blacklisting individuals due to their beliefs. In response to the 1947 testimonies in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee, Hollywood responded to baseless accusations of Communism by adopting a blacklist of employees. This touring exhibition at the Skirball explores the proceedings, investigations, motives and choices of those involved, with a particular focus on the Jewish creatives and executives caught up in the process.

Explore the history and impact of the Hollywood Red Scare and its contemporary implications for civil liberties, propaganda, and shifting definitions of American patriotism.
