1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

KIA and Hyundai Vehicle Thefts
A TikTok challenge that exposed the vulnerabilities of vehicles manufactured by KIA and Hyundai has led to an uptick in vehicle thefts in the San Fernando Valley area, the Los Angeles Police Department is warning.  Although this trend is currently in the Valley, it is always possible that it will make its way to the Westside.

Police are urging KIA and Hyundai vehicle owners to contact their local dealerships to retrofit their keyed ignition switches.  Please see the article below for more information:

2.  HEAVY RAIN EXPECTED – HURRICANE HILARY

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

Hurricane Hilary has intensified to Category 4 status as it continues to make its way northward off the coast of Baja California Friday morning, bringing with it winds up to 140 mph.

The National Hurricane Center has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for a wide swath of Southern California, marking the first time such a warning has been issued for the region.

The NWS expects heavy rainfall to peak in the region this weekend and into Monday.

The powerful storm is expected to reach Southern California by Saturday as a tropical storm. However, it has the potential to become the rare tropical cyclone to make landfall in the state. According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, it’s been nearly a century since a tropical cyclone hit the region, bringing strong winds, large surf and torrential rain.

If you have leaks, now is the time to have them repaired.  Stay dry!

3.  RECYCLING – NEW RULES FOR PLASTIC WASTE

Effective immediately, only plastic products
marked 1, 2 or 5 can be placed in the BLUE recycling bins.

Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment (LASAN) is now advising that only plastics numbered 1, 2 or 5 will be recycled and should go in the BLUE recycling bins provided by the City. Other kinds of plastic should go in the black trash bin.

Putting unrecyclable plastics in the blue bin contaminates whole loads that might otherwise have been recyclable, and encourages continued manufacture and use of unrecyclable plastics that pollute our waterways and contaminate the food chain.

For more information, contact the City Facilities Recycling Program (CFRP) at san.cfrp@lacity.org or call (213) 485-2260.

4.  COYOTE SAFETY REMINDERS

Although we have not received any reports of coyote sightings in the neighborhood, there have been several sightings in other nearby areas.  This is a good reminder to take safety precautions for potential encounters with coyotes.

The following Safety Tips are from the LA Animal Services website.
You can also download a more detailed brochure here – Encounters with Coyotes

DETERRENTS & HOME SAFETY

  • Trash cans should be securely fastened so wildlife is not invited to feed from them.  Ammonia or pepper sprinkled in the trash may also discourage a scavenging coyote.
  • Remove pet food dishes when your pet has finished eating and do not leave food outside. Pick ripe fruit and clean rotten produce off the ground.
  • Trim hedges and clear brush from under trees and around your home so the coyotes do not have a hiding place.
  • Special coyote fencing is available and can be found online.
  • Close off crawl spaces under porches, decks and sheds. Coyotes use such areas for resting and raising young.
  • Keep your property well lit at night, especially when you go out with your dog for the last potty break before bed.

COYOTE ENCOUNTERS – KEEP CHILDREN & PETS SAFE

  • Small animals and children should not be left outside unattended if there are coyotes in your area. Never leave small children and pets unattended outdoors even if your yard is fenced.
  • Walk your dog on a leash at all times — not only is it the law, but it will keep your pet safe. Do not allow your dog to interact or “play” with a coyote.
  • If you see coyotes, make loud noises and scare them away: bang pots and pans, use a whistle, etc. BUT, they are smart and you cannot keeping making the same noise and expect the coyotes to fall for the same trick over and over.
  • When you are walking your dog in areas known to have coyotes, you can carry a loud whistle or even an umbrella that you can open and close rapidly to scare them away. Unlike the approach with an aggressive dog, you can raise your arms above your head and stomp your feet while shouting at the coyote to scare them away.
  • Bring cats and dogs inside at night.
  • Feeding wildlife is illegal! Do not approach or feed wild animals, including coyotes. It is unsafe and a violation of the law.
