Please note that portions of Strathmore and Westholme near Hillel will not have relaxed parking, per Hillel’s conditional use permit.

3.  NEW COVID BOOSTER VACCINES NOW AVAILABLE

The new COVID-19 boosters are now available.  The updated COVID vaccine can protect against severe illness from the virus, and is approved for people 6 months and older.

The development comes amid a spike in COVID cases in the Golden State and just as cold and flu season ramps up. State health officials are urging residents to get fully vaccinated as another ‘tripledemic’ looms.

4.  STOP THE SPREAD OF WEST NILE VIRUS

Last week, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported the season’s first death from West Nile Virus (WNV). The deceased was a resident of the San Fernando Valley.

Each year, hundreds of people in Los Angeles County are diagnosed with this infection, carried from birds to humans by mosquito bite.  Most mosquitoes do not carry the virus, but the bite of an infected mosquito can cause fever, rash, muscle aches, and fatigue. In severe cases it can lead to paralysis or even death. While everyone is at risk for WNV, people over 50 and those with pre-existing health problems are at greater risk.

We can all do our part to stop the spread of WNV by eliminating the stagnant water where mosquitoes lay their eggs.  A single teaspoon of standing water can breed hundreds of mosquitoes.  Please protect yourself, your family and your neighbors  by taking the following steps.

  • Remove standing water from clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, discarded tires, buckets, watering cans, the saucers under flower pots, or anything that holds water for more than a week.
  • Change the water in pet dishes, birdbaths, and other small containers weekly.
  • If you have an ornamental pond, stock it with insect-eating mosquitofish. You can get them for free from your local vector control district.
  • Make sure that swimming pools, spas, and ponds are properly maintained.
  • Wear EPA-recommended insect repellent when outdoors where mosquitoes may be present.

If you see a neglected (green) swimming pools or any accumulation of standing water too big for you to remove, call the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District at 562-944-9656 or online at www.glacvcd.org.
