2.  CALIFORNIA SPECIAL ELECTION – VOTE!

The California Gubernatorial Recall Election is Tuesday, September 14, 2021.

The recall ballot will ask two questions: 1) do you want to recall Governor Newsom? and 2) If the governor is recalled, who do you want to replace him?

If you’ve already received a ballot, return your ballot by mail (postage is prepaid) by September 14, or take it in person to a ballot drop box, to a voting location or your county elections office by 8:00 p.m. on September 14, 2021.

If you aren’t registered you can still register in-person on Election Day at most polling places, county elections offices, and vote centers.

Find your local polling place or ballot dropbox here:

The Council Office has notified us that parking will be relaxed in our community during the upcoming Jewish holidays.  For a complete list of dates and locations where the parking rules will be relaxed, please click here:

Relaxed Parking – Jewish Holidays 2021

Please note that portions of Strathmore and Westholme near Hillel will not have relaxed parking, per Hillel’s conditional use permit.

We wish you a happy and sweet New Year!
L’ Shanah Tovah!

4.  LAPD UPDATE – NEW SENIOR LEAD OFFICER

Senior Lead Officer Pete Ojeda is being reassigned to an area that has significant gang activity (the Cadillac Robertson area, near Hamilton High School), which fortunately we do not have in this area.  Officer Ojeda had significant prior experience working with gang related issues, so he was chosen to tackle that area because of his particular expertise.

Our new Senior Lead Officer James Allen has been with West LAPD for a while.  He is an excellent officer and highly regarded.  His contact information is below.  We look forward to working with him.

At this time we anticipate move-in to be a fully masked event, where parents and family can help move the student in.

Parking at UCLA and in Westwood Village may be affected. The first day of classes is on Thursday, Sept. 23. Welcome, Bruins!

6.  NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH

September is National Preparedness Month and this year’s theme is “Prepared to Protect.” Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love.

This is a great reminder that we all must prepare ourselves and our families now and throughout the year to ensure that we are ready to respond to disasters when they occur.

Take time this month to review your family emergency plan and supplies:

  • Make sure your supply kit includes enough food and water for at least three days, a flashlight, a fire extinguisher, and a whistle.
  • Consider each person’s specific needs, including medication.
  • Get a kit and make a plan.

7.  MAYOR’S YOUTH COUNCIL

Make a positive impact in your community!  The Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) application for the 2021-2022 program is now available. We are currently looking for passionate high school students from each region in LA interested in civic engagement to join the 2021-2022 MYC class. Please find additional information and the application HERE.

What is the Mayor’s Youth Council?
The Mayor’s Youth Council is a dynamic one-year program that gives Los Angeles high school students a voice in City Hall. The Council empowers members with tools, policy knowledge, and leadership training vital to advocating for causes relevant to the youth of our city.

Who should apply to the Council?
All student leaders currently enrolled in a Los Angeles high school are invited to apply! The Council will meet in cohorts based on geographic area.

What is the commitment?
Meetings will be held virtually twice a month in the fall (2nd and 4th Wednesday in the evening), with the possibility of meeting in person once a month in the spring (every 3rd Saturday). Dates are subject to change. Meetings will be facilitated by their Area Representative in the Mayor’s Office.

The deadline to apply is on Friday, September 24, 2021.
