2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT – VACATION PRECAUTIONS

If you are planning to leave town this summer, please take precautions to safeguard your home, cars and property while you are gone:

  1. Don’t advertise/post that you are leaving. Don’t post that you are going to “Paris” or “Vegas” and how much fun it will be. Don’t ask for a house/pet sitter on public websites or mention when you’ll be gone.
  2. Stop your newspapers.
  3. Stop your mail.  Or, ask someone to watch your porch/yard for packages, mail, and flyers.
  4. Use Amazon Drop Box. They will hold your packages.
  5. Test your alarm/video system. Make sure it is in good working order.
  6. Don’t talk about your trip in front of Uber or hired drivers. Meet your driver away from your house when you go to the airport.  Or mention that a family member is still at home.

at the Hammer Museum

Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song is a definitive exploration of singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen as seen through the prism of his internationally renowned hymn “Hallelujah.”This feature-length documentary weaves together three creative strands: The songwriter and his times; the song’s dramatic journey from record label reject to chart-topping hit; and moving testimonies from major recording artists for whom “Hallelujah” has become a personal touchstone.

Approved for production by Leonard Cohen just before his 80th birthday in 2014, the film accesses a wealth of never-before-seen archival materials from the Cohen Trust including Cohen’s personal notebooks, journals and photographs, performance footage, and extremely rare audio recordings and interviews with Cohen, John Cale, Brandi Carlile, Eric Church, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, Sharon Robinson, Regina Spektor, and Rufus Wainwright.

Beginning May 3, 2023, air travelers heading on vacation or business trips within any of the 50 states will need to have a REAL ID compliant driver’s license if they want to continue using it at airport security checkpoints. Otherwise, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require another federally approved form of identification.

2.  GREEN TEAM UPDATE – CITY WATERING RESTRICTIONS

Green Team Reminder:
New City Water Restrictions Do Not Apply to Trees!

As of June 1, new water restrictions are in place for Los Angeles. If your address ends in an odd number, your watering is limited to Monday and Friday.  Thursday and Sunday are watering days for house addresses that end in an even number.  There is no watering between 9 am and 4 pm and each watering is capped at 8 minutes.

The City restrictions do not however apply to watering trees.  Trees are recognized as an essential part of our City infrastructure and officials believe that trees are needed to stave off drought. If we stop caring for our trees, we won’t see the effects for many months.  Underwatered trees might appear to be fine now, but ultimately buds will not form properly next season and leaves might only open on half the tree or open small and immediately die.

Continue to give mature trees a deep watering once a month.  Newly planted trees up to 2 years of age should receive a 5-gallon deep watering once a week.  This is essential if they are to survive and thrive.

For more on water restrictions and trees, see the following LA Times article “SoCal Needs to Keep Vital Trees Alive Despite Unprecedented Watering Restrictions.”

https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2022-05-24/trees-are-critical-city-infrastructure-keep-watering-them

4.  LAPD SECURITY ADVICE

Window Safety – As the temperatures start to rise, please remember to not leave windows open, even on the second floor. Burglars many times will easily access the second floor with unsecured ladders or even stack patio furniture to gain access. Let’s make it more difficult by securing windows and doors, and always arming alarms prior to leaving home.

Vehicle Safety – Please DO NOT leave key fobs or keys in your vehicle, and do not leave your car unlocked. And please don’t leave valuables inside your vehicle, especially if they are visible from outside the vehicle. A car parked in a secure parking garage does not make it immune from being broken into.

Phone & Email Scams – If you get a call or email stating that you need to send money or gift cards, most likely it’s a scam. If they say they are from a reputable company, hang up and contact the company with a phone number that you acquire independently to check authenticity. Sometimes these suspects can be very convincing—but never just hand over money, gift cards or any personal information.

Selling Items Online & Meeting In-Person – If you are going to sell an item on the internet and meet in person, make sure you have someone else with you and make the transaction in a public location. Many people meet in front of police station to make the transaction and advise the buyer of the location prior to meeting.

Grocery Shopping Safety – Please keep your purse on your person and not left in the shopping cart. Thieves will many times work in pairs, one distracts the victim while the other suspect takes the purse. If you feel it is necessary to keep your purse in the shopping cart, have it zipped up and place it in the bottom.

LA is hosting this year’s Summit of the Americas, https://www.state.gov/summit-of-the-americas/, downtown at the LA Convention Center from this coming Monday, June 6, through Friday, June 10.

Many exits off the 110 Harbor Freeway will be closed, along with numerous street closures. Commuters should avoid downtown if possible.

In addition, it is expected that Vice President Harris (who has a home in Brentwood) and President Biden will both be attending the Summit of the Americas, so there are likely to be additional traffic impacts on the Westside.

2.  OUTDOOR WATERING RESTRICTIONS

Water Restrictions Coming Into Effect – Los Angeles is in its third straight year of drought, and low reservoir levels mean it’s time for Angelenos to start stepping up further to conserve water responsibly. Technically, LADWP is moving to “Phase 3” of its water conservation plan. In practice, what this means for you is that starting soon – June 1 – Los Angeles will restrict 2 outdoor watering days to 2 a week  (down from three.)

3.  HWPOA MEMBERSHIP – ONLINE DUES PAYMENTS

For many years, HWPOA has offered members the option to pay annual membership dues online.  We were recently notified that there was a glitch on the payment website that made it difficult to pay dues.  Our service provider (Square) has informed us that the glitch has been fixed, so if you would like to pay dues online, it should be working properly.  We are very sorry if you had difficulties paying dues in recent months.

4.  DMV EXTENDED HOURS

The California Department of Motor Vehicles will open 64 field offices across the state an hour earlier beginning Thursday, June 2, and ending Friday, September 30.

“While most folks no longer need to visit us at the office, for the rare times they do, we’ve extended our hours. Giving customers an extra hour to complete their DMV transactions is just another way the DMV is making things convenient for our customers,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “The extra hour also allows more customers to complete their REAL ID application now instead of waiting until next spring as the federal enforcement date nears.”

Starting next week, many field offices will open at 7 a.m. every weekday, except Wednesdays. The offices will open at 9 a.m. on Wednesday and close at 5 p.m. daily.

5.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

LADDER ACCESS TO HOMES
The LAPD is reminding homeowners that suspects may use a ladder located in the backyard to gain access to the second- floor balcony.

If you have any ladders on your property, please secure them in a locked garage, storage shed or secure with chain to prevent suspects from gaining access to the second story. Most suspects expect the second story of a home to not be alarmed like the first floor. Remember always lock your doors and windows (even on the second floor) when you leave your home.

PERSONAL TRAINER RECOMMENDATION
I would like to recommend personal trainer, Tom Dailey who already has a number of clients in the neighborhood.

“Dailey” Master Trainer’s Longevity Tips
Tom Dailey, health coach and master trainer with 23 years in the health and fitness industry, provides you with knowledge to slow the aging clock, improve your vitality and overall quality of life.

Stand on one leg to improve longevity?!?!
Did you know that in addition to nutrition, exercise, and quality sleep/stress management, balance and stability are indicators of biological age and longevity?  Without regular practice, balance skills will worsen with age, greatly increasing the risk of falling.  Fortunately, this skill can be improved simply by spending time standing on one leg; but for how long?  By age, the normal period of single leg stance ability with eyes opened is as follows:

  • Under 40:  45 seconds
  • 40-49:  42 seconds
  • 50-59:  41 seconds
  • 60-69:  32 seconds
  • 70-79:  22 seconds
  • 80-99:  9 seconds

Additionally, when slightly more complex balance exercises are practiced, brain health and function are positively impacted, and that’s something all of us would like to experience.

My programs addressboth the physical and lifestyle components of longevity and anti-aging: mobility/flexibility, strength and cardiovascular training, balance/stability, stress management, sleep, and nutrition.

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

Movie-goers took to Twitter last week with sadness and concern for L.A.’s dwindling supply of arthouse film theaters following news that the Landmark Theatres Pico location will close its doors at the end of the month after 15 years.

“For months, we’ve worked to extend our tenancy of The Landmark Pico but have been unable to reach terms. We send our deepest appreciation to the Pico staff, guests, and the filmmaking community for their support over the years,” said Landmark Theatres’ President Ken Holloway.

The Pico location, which is Landmark’s westside flagship, will close after its lease expires at the end of May.

2.  ANNUAL MEETING – AGENDA UPDATE

Councilmember Koretz will not speak at our Annual Meeting
For 2 years, the 4 homeowner associations, Westwood Neighborhood Council, Westwood Community Council, and WLA Chamber have been negotiating Koretz’s amendments to the Westwood Village Specific Plan. Every group agreed to support 18 of his 19 amendments to encourage new occupancy in the Village with the hope of filling the many vacancies.

We met with the Councilman on Dec. 9, 2021 when he expressed delight at our support. We worked to minimize the requirement for signage but the Planning Dept. said it could not be accommodated. There has never been a factual discussion as to the root of the problem which we believe to be in the Planning Dept., not with the community.

Our group does NOT support 1 amendment – removing the Design Review Board (DRB, appointed by Koretz) from reviewing signs for new businesses. The community was accused of filing too many appeals, too many signage appeals, and the DRB for causing delays, ALL of which were proven to be inaccurate and just plain FALSE.

A “trained eye” on the DRB should be the one to review signage design and placement, not a bureaucrat behind a counter who has no formal design training.

Facts be damned, his mind was made up. He would not support the community on one VERY small but important request. When working with the council office, we have always worked with facts, not accusations that were proven wrong.

For nearly 3 years, HWPOA has had a working “Committee on the Village,” chaired by Jann Williams, AIA, to research every aspect of Westwood Village. The Committee agreed with the support of the 18 huge amendments that should bring welcome change to Westwood but wants DRB review of signage as is required in Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, and many communities across the city. The DRB also wrote a letter in support of its review. Councilmember Koretz said “No” and scheduled a hearing without notification to the community. We requested that he postpone the hearing this Tues. to no avail.

We find his accusations to be baseless and his interest in the pursuit of truth to be of no importance. He is not with us!

Jann Williams, AIA
Sandy Brown

Before Tues., May 17th – You can email paulkoretz42@yahoo.com and ask that he support DRB review of signs.

Tues., May 17th at 2 PM

3.  SOUTHBOUND 405 AT WILSHIRE – RAMP CLOSURES

LADWP announced earlier this week  that effective June 1, outdoor watering in the city of Los Angeles will be restricted to two days per week based on a resident’s address:

  • ODD Addresses – Monday and Friday
  • EVEN Addresses – Thursday and Sunday

Additional restrictions:

  • Watering capped at only 8 minutes (or 15 minutes for sprinklers with water-conserving nozzles).
  • No outdoor watering will be allowed between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. regardless of the watering days.

Those who don’t comply with the new rules will receive a warning, followed by escalating fines for each subsequent violation.

The city also urged residents with pools to use pool covers to reduce the risk of evaporation, and called on people to wash their vehicles only at commercial car wash facilities.

7.  BLOOD MOON LUNAR ECLIPSE – SUNDAY

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:
The first of two total lunar eclipses visible to SoCal residents this year occurs Sunday and Monday and will turn May’s full flower moon blood red. Oh, and it’s also a supermoon — depending on whom you ask.

Whether you’ll be able to see the lunar eclipse, of course, depends on the weather. Accuweather predicts cloud cover as high as 60% in Southern California’s coastal areas, which would badly impact visibility. In urban areas further inland, cloud coverage of around 40% is expected.

3.  HOLMBY WESTWOOD GREEN TEAM UPDATE

Tree Planting Event – May 7
The Holmby Westwood Green Team needs your help planting trees on Saturday, May 7th.  See flyer below for more information.  If you would like to volunteer, please sign up here:Treepeople.org/volunteer

Help Your Trees Survive the Drought:  Water them!
Our current drought conditions do not mean you should stop watering your parkway trees. Although the state and city have imposed water restrictions, they still strongly recommend prioritizing proper watering of your trees. Trees should be given a higher priority than lawns. Lawns can be replaced in a matter of weeks.  Without water, trees will die.  Remember that it takes more money, water, and time to replace a mature tree lost to drought, then to keep it alive.  A 20-year-old tree needs 20 years to be replaced.

Here are some tree watering tips:

  1. Check the soil moisture by your tree.  Poke a long screwdriver into the soil.  If you cannot poke in at least 6 inches, it’s time to water.
  2. For established trees (3 + years) slowly soak the root zone under the canopy – use a soaker hoser, sprinkler hose attachment on a low setting or other water system.  Watering slowly allows water to go down deeply  – which in turn encourages root growth.
  3. Young trees (0-3 years) need 5 gallons of water at least 2 times per week.
  4. MULCH! 2” to 3” of mulch or leaf litter around the tree (away from the trunk) helps retain moisture, reduce tree water needs and protect your trees. Unlike rocks, mulch does not compete for water or radiate heat.
  5. Do not use synthetic turf on parkways and turn off the water.  Your tree(s) will die.
  6. Water early in the morning or after the sunsets, since this is when plants and trees replace water lost during the day and less water is lost to evaporation at these times.

And please do not plant artificial turf on your parkway.  Without water, your tree will die.

4.  COYOTE ALERT

A homeowner near Holmby Park recently spotted a coyote in their front yard.  This is a good reminder to take safety precautions for potential encounters with coyotes.

The following Safety Tips are from the LA Animal Services website. You can also download a more detailed Coyote Brochure

DETERRENTS & HOME SAFETY

  • Trash cans should be securely fastened so wildlife is not invited to feed from them.  Ammonia or pepper sprinkled in the trash may also discourage a scavenging coyote.
  • Remove pet food dishes when your pet has finished eating and do not leave food outside. Pick ripe fruit and clean rotten produce off the ground.
  • Trim hedges and clear brush from under trees and around your home so the coyotes do not have a hiding place.
  • Special coyote fencing is available and can be found online.
  • Close off crawl spaces under porches, decks and sheds. Coyotes use such areas for resting and raising young.
  • Keep your property well lit at night, especially when you go out with your dog for the last potty break before bed.

COYOTE ENCOUNTERS – KEEP CHILDREN & PETS SAFE

  • Small animals and children should not be left outside unattended if there are coyotes in your area. Never leave small children and pets unattended outdoors even if your yard is fenced.
  • Walk your dog on a leash at all times — not only is it the law, but it will keep your pet safe. Do not allow your dog to interact or “play” with a coyote.
  • If you see coyotes, make loud noises and scare them away: bang pots and pans, use a whistle, etc. BUT, they are smart and you cannot keeping making the same noise and expect the coyotes to fall for the same trick over and over.
  • When you are walking your dog in areas known to have coyotes, you can carry a loud whistle or even an umbrella that you can open and close rapidly to scare them away. Unlike the approach with an aggressive dog, you can raise your arms above your head and stomp your feet while shouting at the coyote to scare them away.
  • Bring cats and dogs inside at night.
  • Feeding wildlife is illegal! Do not approach or feed wild animals, including coyotes. It is unsafe and a violation of the law.

FOLLOW-HOME ROBBERIES
A follow-home robbery occurred earlier this week on Coldwater Canyon.  When you are out dining or in public, it is in your best interest to not wear Rolex watches or other expensive jewelry, or post it on social media.  Be mindful of displaying any wealth and stay acutely aware of your surroundings, including who is paying attention to you. If you believe you are being followed, you should drive directly to the police station (the West LA Police Station is on Butler, one block south of Santa Monica Blvd, a few blocks west of the 405 Frwy). It is also a good idea to alter your routes home and pay attention to vehicles that repeatedly make the same turns as you.

3.  MASK MANDATE – AIRPORTS & PUBLIC TRANSIT

Under a new COVID-19 health order that takes effect Friday, April 22, masks will again be required on all public transit within Los Angeles County, including:

  • Buses
  • Trains
  • Taxis
  • Ride-sharing service vehicles
  • Airports, bus terminals and other transportation hubs

LA County’s public health department reinstated part of its COVID mask mandate Friday, meaning a patchwork of rules for masks on public transit and at airports in Southern California. The decision announced Thursday came just days after a federal judge overturned the Centers for Disease Control’s mask mandate on public transportation.

Initially, local transit agencies went along with that Florida judge’s ruling, allowing the federal rule enforcing masks on planes, trains, buses and other ways of getting around to lapse. Masks became optional.  But that changed with Thursday’s announcement from the county health department. LA County’s own public health director apologized in making the announcement, saying the change will likely create confusion among residents feeling a sense of mask “whiplash” due to the back-and-forth.  The order goes beyond the state’s guidance, which recommends, but does not require, masks on public transit.

THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE: FLAGS AND BANNERS
The Wende Museum at The Armory
10808 Culver Blvd., Culver City
Now through Sunday, October 23, 2022

The Wende Museum is an art museum, historical archive of the Cold War, and center for creative community engagement that explores and inspires change.

Like many other governments, the communist countries of the twentieth century produced an abundance of flags and banners. They were omnipresent at military parades, sports events, and public gatherings. Apart from national flags, many organizations produced their own richly decorated flags and banners. The Medium is the Message combines Cold War-era political flags from communist countries with contemporary artworks offering critical reflection on the here and now.
