FOLLOW-HOME ROBBERIES
A follow-home robbery occurred earlier this week on Coldwater Canyon.  When you are out dining or in public, it is in your best interest to not wear Rolex watches or other expensive jewelry, or post it on social media.  Be mindful of displaying any wealth and stay acutely aware of your surroundings, including who is paying attention to you. If you believe you are being followed, you should drive directly to the police station (the West LA Police Station is on Butler, one block south of Santa Monica Blvd, a few blocks west of the 405 Frwy). It is also a good idea to alter your routes home and pay attention to vehicles that repeatedly make the same turns as you.

2.  HWPOA ANNUAL MEETING – SAVE THE DATE

SAVE THE DATE:
HWPOA ANNUAL MEETING
Online via Zoom
Tuesday, May 17

The Annual HWPOA membership meeting is scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, May 17. The meeting will be held virtually (via Zoom). More details to follow.  A new Board of Directors for 2022-23 will be elected and we will have several guest speakers.  Mark your calendars!

3.  MASK MANDATE – AIRPORTS & PUBLIC TRANSIT

Under a new COVID-19 health order that takes effect Friday, April 22, masks will again be required on all public transit within Los Angeles County, including:

  • Buses
  • Trains
  • Taxis
  • Ride-sharing service vehicles
  • Airports, bus terminals and other transportation hubs

LA County’s public health department reinstated part of its COVID mask mandate Friday, meaning a patchwork of rules for masks on public transit and at airports in Southern California. The decision announced Thursday came just days after a federal judge overturned the Centers for Disease Control’s mask mandate on public transportation.

Initially, local transit agencies went along with that Florida judge’s ruling, allowing the federal rule enforcing masks on planes, trains, buses and other ways of getting around to lapse. Masks became optional.  But that changed with Thursday’s announcement from the county health department. LA County’s own public health director apologized in making the announcement, saying the change will likely create confusion among residents feeling a sense of mask “whiplash” due to the back-and-forth.  The order goes beyond the state’s guidance, which recommends, but does not require, masks on public transit.

4.  CITY COUNCIL & MAYORAL ELECTION – CANDIDATE TALKS

CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 5 VIRTUAL CANDIDATE FORUM – YOUTUBE LINK
Earlier this month, HWPOA co-sponsored a Westwood & UCLA Virtual Candidate Forum for L.A. City Council District 5.  This forum focused specifically on Westwood, Westwood Village, UCLA, and 5th District issues.  In addition to addressing the issues of homelessness & housing affordability in Westwood, and public safety & policing, other Westwood-specific questions focused on Westwood Village revitalization & economic development, historic preservation, bike lanes in Westwood, the Sepulveda Transit Corridor Project, Westwood parks & green space, as well as L.A. City government’s failure to enforce its own laws and ordinances, and corruption in local government.
