3.  HOLMBY WESTWOOD GREEN TEAM UPDATE

Tree Planting Event – May 7
The Holmby Westwood Green Team needs your help planting trees on Saturday, May 7th.  See flyer below for more information.  If you would like to volunteer, please sign up here:Treepeople.org/volunteer

Help Your Trees Survive the Drought:  Water them!
Our current drought conditions do not mean you should stop watering your parkway trees. Although the state and city have imposed water restrictions, they still strongly recommend prioritizing proper watering of your trees. Trees should be given a higher priority than lawns. Lawns can be replaced in a matter of weeks.  Without water, trees will die.  Remember that it takes more money, water, and time to replace a mature tree lost to drought, then to keep it alive.  A 20-year-old tree needs 20 years to be replaced.

Here are some tree watering tips:

  1. Check the soil moisture by your tree.  Poke a long screwdriver into the soil.  If you cannot poke in at least 6 inches, it’s time to water.
  2. For established trees (3 + years) slowly soak the root zone under the canopy – use a soaker hoser, sprinkler hose attachment on a low setting or other water system.  Watering slowly allows water to go down deeply  – which in turn encourages root growth.
  3. Young trees (0-3 years) need 5 gallons of water at least 2 times per week.
  4. MULCH! 2” to 3” of mulch or leaf litter around the tree (away from the trunk) helps retain moisture, reduce tree water needs and protect your trees. Unlike rocks, mulch does not compete for water or radiate heat.
  5. Do not use synthetic turf on parkways and turn off the water.  Your tree(s) will die.
  6. Water early in the morning or after the sunsets, since this is when plants and trees replace water lost during the day and less water is lost to evaporation at these times.

And please do not plant artificial turf on your parkway.  Without water, your tree will die.

4.  COYOTE ALERT

A homeowner near Holmby Park recently spotted a coyote in their front yard.  This is a good reminder to take safety precautions for potential encounters with coyotes.

The following Safety Tips are from the LA Animal Services website. You can also download a more detailed Coyote Brochure

DETERRENTS & HOME SAFETY

  • Trash cans should be securely fastened so wildlife is not invited to feed from them.  Ammonia or pepper sprinkled in the trash may also discourage a scavenging coyote.
  • Remove pet food dishes when your pet has finished eating and do not leave food outside. Pick ripe fruit and clean rotten produce off the ground.
  • Trim hedges and clear brush from under trees and around your home so the coyotes do not have a hiding place.
  • Special coyote fencing is available and can be found online.
  • Close off crawl spaces under porches, decks and sheds. Coyotes use such areas for resting and raising young.
  • Keep your property well lit at night, especially when you go out with your dog for the last potty break before bed.

COYOTE ENCOUNTERS – KEEP CHILDREN & PETS SAFE

  • Small animals and children should not be left outside unattended if there are coyotes in your area. Never leave small children and pets unattended outdoors even if your yard is fenced.
  • Walk your dog on a leash at all times — not only is it the law, but it will keep your pet safe. Do not allow your dog to interact or “play” with a coyote.
  • If you see coyotes, make loud noises and scare them away: bang pots and pans, use a whistle, etc. BUT, they are smart and you cannot keeping making the same noise and expect the coyotes to fall for the same trick over and over.
  • When you are walking your dog in areas known to have coyotes, you can carry a loud whistle or even an umbrella that you can open and close rapidly to scare them away. Unlike the approach with an aggressive dog, you can raise your arms above your head and stomp your feet while shouting at the coyote to scare them away.
  • Bring cats and dogs inside at night.
  • Feeding wildlife is illegal! Do not approach or feed wild animals, including coyotes. It is unsafe and a violation of the law.
