1.  HOLIDAY SAFETY – THEFT PREVENTION

‘Tis the season to be… stealing!  Please be aware of the following and take appropriate precautions:

Follow-home robberies  have recently occurred in several areas of Los Angeles. The suspects target people wearing expensive jewelry that is very visible and driving high-end vehicles.

The best prevention is always being aware of your surroundings and when leaving a shopping center, night club or restaurant. When driving in your vehicle, always check your mirrors to see if you’re being followed. If you believe you’re being followed, drive to the nearest police station. If you are unable to get to a police station, drive to a crowded public place and call police.

Porch Pirates are still stealing packages from your home while you’re away. Think about having deliveries sent to work and have your porch cleared by neighbors if you’re not home. If you’re ordering now, and going on vacation, check the delivery dates and think about delaying shipment.

Trash Cans should be removed on pickup day and not left out an extra day. Those are sure indicators you’re not home — EVEN if you are, which can be even more dangerous.

2.  THE PASSING OF CHIP CHASALOW

The HWPOA Board of Directors regrets to inform you that former HWPOA President and member of the Board of Directors, Irwin “Chip” Chasalow, passed away last week following a short illness.

Chip was a resident in Westwood for over 50 years and had a great interest in our community.  He was most helpful in legal matters involving the board and was always available for consultation.  He will be greatly missed.

The HWPOA Board of Directors extends its condolences to Chip’s wife, Judy and to the Chasalow family.

3.  HOLMBY WESTWOOD GREEN TEAM UPDATE

TREE OF THE MONTH – JACARANDA

This month the Green Team is pleased to share the Jacaranda as our Tree of the Month.  Besides the tree’s botanic name, provenance and description, the profile indicates the tree’s drought and pest tolerance, its potential for root damage, a fun fact about the species and where you can find the tree in our neighborhood.

The profile information is primarily drawn from the STS Publication “Street Trees Recommended for Southern California” and the Selectree Cal Poly website.

Special thanks to Cassandra Franklin, Kathryn Welch Howe, Cage Hall, and Allyson Bunting for writing and designing the Tree of the Month Profiles.

4.  WATER CONSERVATION – OUTDOOR WATERING

From LADWP:

We need every single LADWP customer to step up and take action as we face a third dry year and serious drought.  LADWP is asking its customers to refamiliarize themselves and comply with the City’s Water Conservation Ordinance. Since 2009, LADWP has remained at Phase 2 of the Water Conservation Ordinance which limits outdoor watering to three days a week, along with other prohibited uses of water. As water supply conditions continue to develop, LADWP may take further steps to mandate conservation, including further limiting outdoor watering.

5.  MOVIE PREMIERE – STREET CLOSURES

SONY PICTURES will be holding the Premiere of “SPIDERMAN NO WAY HOME”, at 7:30 PM on Monday, December 13, 2021 at the Regency Village and the Bruin Theatres.

There will be various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue.

6.  WIRELESS ALARM RECOMMENDATION

A homeowner has recommended the following product:

Wireless Driveway Alarm

Hi Neighbors – I highly recommend this wireless alarm!  It’s basically like an invisible line that can go across any space for up to 500 feet.  It normally cost $59 but right now on Amazon there’s a 15% off coupon.

This alarm is wireless so it’s very easy to attach and install (I did it myself) and works on batteries.  If anyone crosses the front walkway onto my property I get a very loud alarm. It’s great for me because although I do have the Ring doorbell, I turn my phone off at night so I wouldn’t hear it anyway. And, my ring doorbell has not caught some motion before. This is totally separate from any mobile device.

It works really well and is very helpful, especially for people that don’t have any existing surveillance system.

7.  GIVE BACK DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Here are a few ways you can help the community this holiday season:

CD5 HOLIDAY DRIVE
Councilmember Koretz’s office is collecting donations for our unhoused neighbors in the Fifth Council District.  Please consider donating items to help them through the winter months.  Items include socks, blankets, sweatshirts and dog food.  There are several drop-off locations, the closest of which is at a volunteer’s home in the neighborhood (1022 Selby Ave.).  See flyer for details:

LAPD HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE
The West LAPD Community Police Station is holding a holiday toy drive through December 15. All toys will be distributed to local children. See flyer below for details:

BLANKET & SOCK DRIVE – SPREAD THE WARMTH
The Department of Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment is organizing a donation drive to collect cold-weather items for homeless individuals across Los Angeles.  They are collecting donations of new and gently used blankets, sleeping bags, and socks throughout December 31st.

Donations can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays at many city yards.  The nearest location is:

West LA District Yard
2027 Stoner Avenue

For more information, please see flyer below.

ONLINE TOY & BOOK DRIVE
The Jewish Federation’s 16th Annual Festival of Lights Toy & Book Drive runs through Dec. 15, 2021.  This holiday season, you can send a gift — and a smile — to a child in need with a donation of a new toy or book (or both!).

The process is entirely virtual this holiday season, so it’s easier than ever. See below for all of the organizations we’re partnering with and their Amazon Wish Lists — and donate straight from there!
