2.  HOLMBY WESTWOOD GREEN TEAM – TREES & DROUGHT

The Holmby Westwood Green Team is addressing issues related to our parkway trees.  In addition to focusing on the trees themselves, we will address the work of the Green Team, efforts by the City of Los Angeles related to urban trees as well as resources for tree care and maintenance.  Please send your questions to Marnie Bodek at mossbodek@msn.com

SHOULD I WATER MY TREES, EVEN THOUGH WE ARE IN A DROUGHT?

YES.  ABSOLUTELY CONTINUE TO WATER YOUR TREES!

In early November, the Metropolitan Water District declared a Drought Emergency in Southern California.  The announcement followed Governor Newsom’s request that Californians voluntarily cut water consumption by 15%.

But conserving water does not mean sacrificing trees.  According to LA Forest Officer, Rachel Malarich “It is not either we conserve water, or we preserve trees.  It absolutely must be both.  Without water, our trees will not survive.”   As a valuable part of the urban infrastructure, trees cool the city, provide shade and improve residents’ physical and mental health.  They play a critical role in air quality as well as water quality, storm water capture and flood prevention.

Although it seems counterintuitive,  Angelenos should continue to water their trees when asked to turn off their tap.  Trees will not survive unless they are watered in a way that does not involve rain.  Trees that are less than 3 years old need to be watered two times per week with five gallons of water each time, mature trees need to be watered one to two times per month up to 24 hours.  It costs more money, time, and water to plant a new tree than it costs to keep one alive.   Keep watering your trees!

California needs trees, and trees need water, even in a drought.

3.  SIDEWALK REPORT GAINS TRACTION

L.A. Controller Ron Galperin’s recent report urging policymakers to make sweeping changes to the City’s sidewalk repair program has quickly gained attention from City leaders, community advocates, local and national media, and residents across Los Angeles. The goal of Controller Galperin’s report is to get L.A.’s 9,000 miles of pedestrian walkways fixed more quickly.

“It’s no secret to anyone who has ever walked the streets in Los Angeles that our sidewalks are in dreadful shape,” said Controller Galperin. “But our sidewalk repair program is broken and the City is moving too slowly to make any difference. Our leaders must adopt a new path forward to make L.A. a more walkable, accessible and safe city for everyone.”

4.  NEW ORDINANCE – PLASTIC FOOD UTENSILS

Get ready to say goodbye to all the unused plastic knives and forks that clutter our kitchen drawers and cupboards.

Due to COVID, many of us have been eating more takeout. Since we eat much of that takeout at home, we very often don’t actually need the extra plastic utensils, condiments, straws and napkins that are automatically included by the restaurants with each order.

Ordinance No. 187030 requires that food and beverage facilities located in the City of Los Angeles — and all third party food delivery services operating in the city — offer disposable food ware accessories (plastic, knives, forks, spoons, stirrers, condiment packets, etc.) only to customers who specifically request them. This phase of the ordinance only applies to larger businesses, those with 26 employees or more.  Smaller establishments will need to curtail their disposable foodware giveaways starting next April.

It may seem like a small matter, but the amount of non-biodegradable, unrecyclable plastic waste accumulating in landfills and congesting our waterways is a threat to marine life and other ecosystems.  It’s past time we stopped creating and consuming so much plastic waste. So the next time you order take-out, “Skip the Stuff!”

5.  UCLA CREST/NIMOY THEATER – COMMUNITY UPDATE

On November 22, 2021, UCLA hosted a virtual meeting and discussion with members of the Westwood Community to provide an update on the renovation of the Nimoy Theater (formerly the Crest Theater).

To view a recording of the virtual update, please visit this YouTube link.

The Nimoy is currently being restored to its originally-envisioned role as a venue for live performance and cinematic arts. Enhancements to the facility include an expanded lobby for pre- and post-performance socializing and events; an updated lobby and guest facilities; new seating and theatrical production systems; and a backstage green room with artist support spaces – all designed to create memorable and transformative experiences for Los Angeles audiences.

Designed to achieve a LEED Gold rating and outperform the required provisions of the California Energy Code by at least 20%, the Nimoy will accommodate contemporary performance by groundbreaking artists scheduled to re-open in late 2022.

To learn more about the renovation, please visit the Center for the Art of Performance.

METRO FARE COLLECTION RESUMES – JAN. 2022

To keep riders and our employees safe, we suspended front door boarding on our buses in March 2020 at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. We also relaxed our rules requiring riders to use the farebox and TAP validator.
