HIT AND RUN DEATH ON SUNSET
Last Saturday night, a man was struck and killed while crossing Sunset Boulevard. He was believed to have been a transient.  The man was crossing Sunset Boulevard on the southbound side of the street just east of Mapleton Drive, at 10:15 p.m. Saturday. He was walking outside of an unmarked crosswalk when a driver struck him and left him for dead. The driver continued eastbound on Sunset Boulevard, according to a watch sergeant at the LAPD’s West Traffic Division.

Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Police had no description of the suspect’s vehicle, and the investigation remains ongoing.

3.  HOLIDAY SAFETY

With the holidays fast approaching, and on any other given day, the LASD would like to remind the various communities we serve to remain vigilant and help us protect your homes and that of your neighbors, by following these burglary prevention tips:

  • Homeowners should make an attempt to give the impression someone is home at all times, which would include leaving a car in driveway, leaving lights on in and around the home at night.
  • Noise inside the house (leave TV or radio on) to give the impression someone is home.
  • Commercial security services that have become popular, inexpensive and easy to use, including but not limited to video recording devices.
  • Use pets such a dog for property protection and deterrence.
  • Most importantly, making contact with neighbors and looking out for one another’s homes.
  • We don’t want our residents to be paranoid; however, they should appropriately suspicious of unusual vehicles or persons slowly traversing through their neighborhood.
  • We encourage residents to ALWAYS and IMMEDIATELY contact law enforcement when they believe they are seeing something suspicious in the neighborhood.
  • Law enforcement recognizes the value of social media, but information should not just be posted on social media without also sharing with such information with local law enforcement agencies.

4.  HOLIDAY TRASH COLLECTION

There will be no curbside trash or recycling collections on Christmas Day or New Years Day. For the upcoming holiday weeks from Tuesday – Friday, garbage and recycling collections will be postponed by one day.

5.  RIDE METRO FOR FREE – CHRISTMAS EVE & NEW YEARS EVE

All Metro Bus and Rail lines will be free to ride on the nights of Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. This means no fare will be charged on Christmas Eve from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. on Christmas morning and from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.

All Metro Rail stations with latched gates will be unlatched during this time. Metro will also run 24-hour rail service on New Year’s Eve, as well as enhanced service to the Rose Parade on Jan. 1.

Metro Bus and Rail will run on a Sunday/Holiday schedule on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day — both fall on Tuesdays this year. This means that bus lines that do not operate on Sundays will not run on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

Additionally, some Metro Bus lines may be impacted by detours due to holiday events. Check out Metro’s Planned Service Advisories page to see if your line will be detouring and for detailed bus routes.

6.  VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – METRO PURPLE LINE

Metro Purple Line Extension – First/Last Mile Walk Audit
First/Last Mile planning for the Purple Line Extension has begun for the Wilshire/Rodeo, Century City/Constellation, Westwood/UCLA and VA Hospital rail stations. We invite you to participate in a Walk Audit, which is part of Metro’s First/Last Mile program to develop plans and implement strategies to ensure safe, accessible, and pleasant trips to and from transit for all riders. A Walk Audit is an in-the-field analysis of the streets surrounding a transit station.

Participants will walk for one hour, noting streetscape conditions, such as sidewalk quality, crosswalks, and barriers to access. Observations provided by participants will be used by Metro to develop the Purple Line Extension First/Last Mile Plan.

8.  ADVISORY COUNCIL ON AGING – SEEKING MEMBERS

Are you an older adult who is civically minded? Do you want to help the city identify emerging needs for the aging community? The Department of Aging is seeking new members to join its Advisory Council on Aging.

The Advisory Council on Aging is a group of volunteers who lend their insights into the community’s planning process and provide recommendations about how to best serve the city’s older population and improve quality of life issues of the city’s older adults.

The Department of Aging is looking for members from diverse ethnic, racial, economic, social and geographic complexion of the City of Los Angeles. Those interested in becoming a member of the Council on Aging must have at least one of the following criteria:

  • Must be age 60 or older;
  • Must be a City of Los Angeles resident or demonstrate evidence of interest and participation in the City of LA Department of Aging Programs;
  • Representatives of: health care provider organizations, provider’s of veterans’ health care and representatives of community and supportive services organizations;
  • Committed to helping the needs of older adults, persons with disabilities and caregivers in the City of Los Angeles

Theatre Forty Holiday Show – Saturday, December 22nd, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Westwood Library.  You won’t want to miss our Holiday Show, when actors from Theatre Forty come to share warm and funny seasonal stories.  Parking is validated, no registration required.
