1. HOLIDAY PACKAGE SAFETY
With the holiday season there are more packages and thieves who want to take advantage of the ripe pickings. Unless you have a ferocious guard dog at your door, we suggest following these simple tips…
DO
- Check your email alerts to know when packages have arrived and have someone bring them into the house as soon as possible.
- If no one is around to receive packages, have them delivered to a safer location, like a workplace or a Smart Locker.
- Check delivery dates to make sure packages don’t arrive when you’re away. If this can’t be avoided, have a friend or neighbor hold them for you.
DON’T
- Leave packages out all day or overnight.
- Leave outgoing mail in your mailbox, especially any bills with checks.
- Thieves are getting more creative and some will arrive at your door with a food delivery bag, leaving with your belongings when they see no one is home. Be on the lookout for suspicious activity.
2. THE AGORA – TO BE DEVELOPED AT LE CONTE & HILGARD
HWPOA has received many concerns and questions raised by neighbors regarding the proposed 16 story, 192 feet high planned boarding house to include 3, 4, and 5 bedroom (231 bedrooms in 64 units) student units at 900 Hilgard.
The city has evidently received the application but plans have not been made available to our association. When plans become available, the project will be discussed at our board meeting. We encourage our members to participate in the discussion.
I was shocked at Councilmember Paul Koretz’s Westwood planning deputy who praised the project at a recent Westwood Community Council meeting, a project that is a blatant example of “spot zoning” and one that requires many approvals from our councilman that our Westwood Multi-Family Specific Plan does not permit.
HWPOA will keep our residents informed as we get more information. I understand that representatives of the developer are going house to house in the neighborhood seeking support. One house has already been purchased by the developer, I would assume, to control the uproar.

3. VOTE CENTER PLACEMENT PROJECT – MEETING
In 2020, Los Angeles County will transition from polling places to vote centers. This new model will allow voters to cast a ballot at any vote center location in the County over an 11-day period. The Vote Center Placement Project’s (VCPP) core mission is to identify and place accessible and convenient vote center locations throughout Los Angeles County.
You are invited to attend a community meeting to provide input and make suggestions on where you believe vote centers can and should be placed.

The Westwood Branch Library has a busy month of events and activities for adults, teens and children. Some of the programs include:

L.A. Musical Salon – Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 2:30 PM. Join us for the last concert in the 2018 Season of our popular Free Concert Series, featuring the Fiato String Quartet, Westwood Library’s Quartet in Residence. We’ll be upstairs in the library on a Sunday afternoon when the library is not open for regular business.

5. MOVIE PREMIERE – STREET CLOSURES
Universal Pictures is planning the premiere of “MORTAL ENGINES” to be held at the Regency Village Theatre, located at 961 Broxton Ave, at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, December 5, 2018.
There will be various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue.

6. WEST L.A. LITTLE LEAGUE – REGISTER NOW

West L.A. Little League is committed to being the best place to play youth baseball and girls softball in Los Angeles.
- Baseball Divisions A through Majors are filling up quickly so be sure to register before it closes!

- Our Girls Softball program is for girls ages 6 thru 12 (age as of December 31, 2018). We have a Coach Pitch option for younger girls as well as Minor and Major (player pitch) divisions. We will also have free clinics with professional instruction throughout the season.

ALL ABOUT BONE (LECTURE) – Wednesday December 5, from 6:30 – 7:30 pm at Westwood Library. Dr. Roy Meals, Holmby Westwood resident and UCLA orthopedic surgeon, will present a broad overview of how bone fascinates anatomists, physicians, paleontologists, anthropologists, art historians, cooks, and musicians, among others.
