2.  COYOTE ALERT

A resident reported seeing several coyotes earlier this week, on Charing Cross between Beverly Glen and Loring.  Here are a few tips when encountering a coyote:

What should I do if a coyote approaches me?
Wave your arms. Shout in a low, loud tone. Throw objects at the coyote while maintaining eye contact. Make yourself look as big as possible. If you are wearing a jacket, take it off & swing around over your head. If possible go towards active or populated areas but do not turn your back & run from the coyote as that could trigger a chase.

How can I keep my pets safe?
Keep you pets indoors or closely supervised when outside. Do not leave small pets unattended in your yard. Walk your dog on a leash at all times & stay close to high pedestrian traffic areas. Avoid dense brushy areas or paths near abandoned properties. If you notice a coyote when walking your dog, keep your dog as close to you as possible & move towards an active area. Never encourage or allow your dog to interact or “play” with coyotes.

How can I keep my children safe?
Make sure that your children never play outside in the same clothes they just ate food in. Wildlife may be attracted to food odors in clothing. Make sure children wash thoroughly after eating. Provide children with a whistle and breakaway necklace they can blow if an animal approaches. Never let them approach any stray animal. If a coyote approaches, they should face the animal, move slowly to another person or dwelling entrance, raise their arms over their head, clap their hands, stomp their feet, blow a whistle, and call out in a stern loud voice “There is a coyote here.” The best thing to do is avoid leaving children unattended.

Deterrents & Scare Tactics

  • Sprinkle cayenne pepper or chili powder in areas where coyotes sleep to deter them from staying. These types of deterrents do not last & will need to be repeated if they become wet. Do not use these methods where children have access & do not use near air ducts.
  • Use motion activated strobe lights, sprinklers, or radios that are set to talk or news stations to help deter the coyotes. Use caution as strobe lights can trigger seizures in people or pets with epilepsy.
  • Use a coyote shaker can. This is a can containing a few coins which can be shaken & thrown towards a coyote. Throw tennis balls, open & close an umbrella towards the coyote, bang two pans together, blow a whistle, use an air horn, or use a high pressure water sprayer. Alternate the deterrents to prevent coyotes from getting used to one method.

3.  L.A. TIMES WEEKLY CIRCULARS

Each week, the L.A. Times delivers a weekly circular to all homes in the neighborhood.  These circulars include several pages of advertisements.  It was brought to the attention of the HWPOA Board of Directors that many people do not pick up the circulars before they blow away and end up as garbage in the street.  Trees are cut down in the process of providing this circular.

We contacted the L.A. Times and were told that they would remove the entire neighborhood from distribution of the circulars once we provide the street address information.

The HWPOA Board discussed the issue and voted in favor of removing the entire neighborhood from the distribution of the circulars.

If you would like to continue to receive these weekly circulars, you may opt-out by contacting us at hwpoa@aol.com.  Please let us know your address.  NOTE:  If you subscribe to the L.A. Times, this will not affect your subscription.  You will still receive your newspaper as scheduled.

4.  PROPER DISPOSAL OF “SHARPS”

SHARPS is a term used to describe items used to puncture skin. Examples are hypodermic needles, suture needles, syringes, lancets and pre-filled pens. To dispose of these items, please place them in a sealed container (you can purchase a red sharps container at most drugstores or you can use something like an empty laundry detergent bottle) and take them to

UCLA S.A.F.E. CENTER
550 Charles E. Young Drive West
(just off of Gayley)

Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays
8:00am-2:00pm
This site accepts electronic waste on Saturdays ONLY

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please call the L.A. Sanitation 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489 and they would be pleased to assist you.

2.  CAUTION – MYLAR BALLOONS

During this time of year, flower leis, personalized cards and balloons are popular gifts for graduation ceremonies as well as Father’s Day. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) reminds our customers that metallic balloons, or Mylars, can cause power outages and pose a public safety risk. Each year, Mylar balloons cause approximately 200 power outages–about one Mylar-related outage every other day in the City of Los Angeles.

The metallic coating on Mylar balloons conducts electricity, and can cause a short circuit or power surge when in contact with power lines. This can lead to large-scale power outages, melting of electrical wires, and fires, leading to possible injuries and property damage. In addition, outages caused by balloons can often result in traffic congestion due to disrupted traffic signals, and cause a significant inconvenience for residents and business owners who lose power.

Unlike latex balloons, Mylar balloons can stay inflated and float in the air for two weeks or more, posing a safety risk to our utility workers and the public.  To reduce the risk of outages and potential injuries, here are some important tips on how to safely and properly handle Mylar balloons:

  • Never release a Mylar balloon outdoors
  • Keep Mylar balloons away from power lines
  • Use balloon weights
  • Never use metallic ribbon with metallic balloons
  • Always deflate metallic balloons and dispose of them properly when no longer in use

If you see a Mylar balloon that has contacted a power line, keep yourself, your equipment, and all other items and people, at least 20 feet away. Always assume the power lines are energized. Do not attempt to climb the pole or try to retrieve the object. Call LADWP at 1-800-DIAL DWP.

3.  WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL – UPDATE

In the recent City of Los Angeles Special Subdivision Election, the new North Westwood Neighborhood Council was created.  This week, the original Westwood Neighborhood Council (WWNC)  passed a motion for a Petition for Shared Boundaries such that Westwood Village and the business area from Wilshire to Ohio on Westwood Boulevard would be shared by the two Councils.  Shared boundaries and shared resources have historic precedent among Neighborhood Councils across Los Angeles.  In addition, the WWNC adopted new bylaws with the boundary changes, and shared resources.

The Petition for Shared Boundaries will be submitted to the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners for approval at a public hearing in late July or August.

4.  L.A. TIMES WEEKLY CIRCULARS

Each week, the L.A. 7.  BIRD SCOOTERS – MORATORIUM

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation is currently in the process of working with the Los Angeles City Council to develop rules and guidelines for the operations of dockless on-demand mobility services (Bird).

In this regard, the Los Angeles City Council is working to impose a citywide moratorium on dockless transportation programs until a regulatory system that protects Los Angeles communities can be established.

In other words, the city is working to require Bird to remove all their scooters until the regulations are established.

8.  FREE INDEPENDENCE DAY CONCERT

Don’t miss it! SUNDAY, JULY 1, 2018 at 2:30 pm @ Westwood Library for a terrific Independence Day Concert, featuring the virtuoso SWING BAND of the LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT BAND.

3.  TRAFFIC ACCIDENT SCAMS

During our weekly Crime Control Meeting at LAPD, it was revealed that detectives believe there may a crew of scam artists targeting drivers throughout the entire West LA area, if not the entire City.

It happens like this… an unsuspecting driver leaves a parking lot after shopping at a commercial establishment (most recently, a shopper leaving the Ralph’s market at Bundy and Wilshire was targeted but thankfully, she did not fall for the scam).  After a minute or so, the suspect’s car will drive up behind them or pull alongside them and begin honking frantically and yelling for the victim to pull over.  When the victim does, the suspect then approaches the victim usually while the bewildered victim is still sitting in their parked car.  The suspect then insists that the victim just hit their car in and claims that the victim is now trying to leave the site of the traffic accident, essentially, accusing the victim of a Hit & Run.

The suspect typically will use flailing arms and loud accusations intimidating the victim and claiming that he’s going to call the police.  This intimidation serves to get the victim to ultimately comply with his demand for money to ‘cover the deductible’.  There may even be a bit of paint transfer as part of the scam to further convince the victim that they unwittingly hit the suspect’s car.  Or, while the victim is dealing with the suspect’s accusations, a second suspect will come up alongside the passenger side of the victim’s car and remove their purse from the front seat.  This is actually an old modus operandi in which they often, but not always, target elderly or lone drivers.

At the time of this note, there is no suspect/vehicle description to share.  A couple of the incidents involved lone Males, either of White or Hispanic or Middle Eastern decent.  The car descriptions have been variable.

If you suspect that you are being followed or if you find yourself being directed to pull over by a total stranger, please take a deep breath and continue to drive to a well-lit location: ideally, a police station, or a gas station, populated strip mall, or any well-lit, busy, location where there will be many eyes. Do not drive to your home.  If or when you do decide to stop make sure your doors are locked (you should always drive with your doors locked anyways) and have your phone in your hand ready to push 911.  And don’t worry about their accusation of ‘Hit & Run’… If you can articulate that you were seeking to find a safe place to pull over, it will likely be considered as reasonable and understandable to police.  In fact, if you believe that you’re dealing with one of these scammers, calmly tell the suspect that you are calling police, and then do so. This may make them scadaddle and leave you alone.  Let them go, but try to be a good witness while you wait for police to arrive: physical description, license plate, vehicle description, etc.  Thank you.

All the best,
Maria

1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

Brentwood’s LAPD Senior Lead Officer Maria Gray is covering for our own LAPD Senior Lead Officer Chris Ragsdale, who has been temporarily reassigned to the West Bureau Homeless Outreach Detail working out of LAPD’s Olympic Police Station.  Here is her recent report from Brentwood:

Detectives know from experience that crime tends to rise during the warmer, summer months.  Burglary detectives specifically, also know this to be true, as do the burglars who make their living by stealing your stuff.  But more importantly, do YOU know this?  Have you prepared for this fact of life in Los Angeles?

Folks tend to leave their homes for extended getaways and vacations during this season.  The other factor is that residential windows are more often left open and/or unsecured due to the heat.  We have experienced a sharp and notable spike of burglaries within the Brentwood area.

In some cases, the burglars accessed the homes through side or rear kitchen windows—windows that were either left open/unsecured or were pried/forced open.  Detectives have also mentioned to me that in some cases, the homes were quite concealed by high fences and landscaping.  While this affords people privacy, it also allows for burglars to walk comfortably around your property without being seen from the street or by neighbors (please consider making environmental design changes to remedy this).  At present time, there is no suspect or vehicle description that I can share with the community.  If things change, I will send out a supplemental notification.  Property taken has been jewelry, watches and cash.

For those of you who have already heard these suggestions, please excuse the redundancy, but at present, one of the best tools to protect your home today is a system of instant notification.  You want a system that has your smart phone alert you immediately when someone is at your front door, AND alerts you when they are along either side of your home, AND alerts you when they are to the rear of your home.  Nothing less will suffice, in my opinion (and the opinion of many of my fellow officers).  The traditional home alarm systems can be a very low priority in terms of police response, but if you call 911 and tell the operator that you see someone in your backyard right now, and here’s their description and here’s what they’re doing, the priority gets bumped up to a lights and sirens scenario and the likelihood of the thief or thieves getting caught or deterred goes up considerably.   So does the likelihood that you’ll retain your possessions.

These systems are relatively inexpensive, easy to install with either rechargeable batteries or hardwired or even solar options.  To see examples of these systems in action, go to www.youtube.com and search Ring Video Doorbell Helps Bust Gang Member in Home and just scroll through the videos.

Feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.

Maria

4.  RECYCLING THE RIGHT WAY

From the New York Times:

Can you recycle coffee cups or greasy pizza boxes? (No.) If you’re tossing things in the recycling bin out of sheer hope, you might be an “aspirational recycler.”

Waste managers often call this wishful or aspirational recycling. But, unfortunately, putting these objects in with the rest of the recycling can do more harm than good.

In the past, the municipalities would have shipped much of their used paper, plastics and other scrap materials to China for processing. But as part of a broad antipollution campaign, China announced last summer that it no longer wanted to import “foreign garbage.”  China also has new contamination standards, and loads of recycling are more likely to be considered contaminated if they contain materials that are not recyclable.

1.  WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL UPDATE

Thank you to everyone who turned out to vote regarding the proposed split of the Westwood Neighborhood Council.

According to the results uploaded by the City Clerk, there were 2027 votes in favor of the subdivision and 1494 votes against.

The next step will be for the Westwood Neighborhood Council to submit its new boundaries (as the result of the election) to the city at which time they will be approved.  Once that has occurred, the neighborhood council will petition the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners to share a portion of the boundary (Westwood Village, Westwood Hills boundary, and Westwood Blvd. south of Wilshire to Ohio) that was lost in the election of a student oriented neighborhood council.  According to the requirements, our neighborhood council meets them all.  We have no reason to believe otherwise and will be requesting Councilmember Koretz and Mayor Garcetti to support our position.

2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

BURGLARY (entry of structure w/intent to commit theft or a felony)
Incident #: 180810663
300 BLOCK CONWAY AV  |  5/20/2018 @ 1:45 AM
The homeowner reported that around 1:45 a.m. they experienced a break-in.  A window panel was removed to gain entrance.  The homeowner interrupted the perpetrator who promptly fled the scene. Police responded and a report was taken.

REPORTING SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES

No one knows their neighborhood better than those who live in it. You recognize what is the norm and what seems odd or out of place or suspicious. So, what do you do when you see a car slowly and suspiciously trolling through your neighborhood, the heads within it craning around checking out homes or construction sites or parked cars? When your gut or your experience or your instincts tell you that these guys aren’t simply visiting or passing through. Who do you give that license plate number that you jotted down (because you all should be jotting down suspicious license plates or, at a minimum, the paper plate description, car description, etc). What do you do with that information now that you have it? You send it to me.

Many of you already do. But I wanted to make the community aware of a relatively new multi-agency entity that specifically takes that information, often forwarded to them via the community, and conducts follow-ups, investigations and research on the car, who owns it or who rented it. So please keep that information coming. I forward it to our detectives who, in turn, forward it to them. It’s been quite successful and there have been significant arrests netted from this effort. We very much appreciate your efforts, eyes and ears in your neighborhood.

Should you need immediate assistance, please contact the West Los Angeles Senior Lead Office at 310-444-0735 or the LAPD’s Non-Emergency Dispatch at 1-877-ASK-LAPD (1-877-275-5273).

All the best,
Maria Gray
WLAPD Senior Lead Officer

1.  WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL – PLEASE VOTE

IMPORTANT!  YOUR VOTE NEEDED!
Election regarding Student Neighborhood Council

Dear Neighbors,

A group of UCLA students want to split up the Westwood Neighborhood Council community, gerrymandering out the single family neighborhoods and commandeering Westwood Village and the commercial area south of Wilshire.

The City is proceeding to the next step:  an election to determine if Westwood should be split up.

PLEASE VOTE “NO”

Vote by Mail (VBM) – The application period closed earlier this week.

  • If you have already voted by mail and returned your ballot, thanks!
  • If you have applied for a VBM ballot, but have not sent the actual ballot back to the City Clerk in the mail yet – Please mail your ballot no later than Saturday, May 19. The VBM ballots must be received by the City Clerk by May 22 (not just postmarked).

To vote in person:

DATE: This coming Tuesday, May 22, 2018
TIME:  2:00 pm – 8:00 pm
WHERE: There are 2 voting locations:

  • Westwood Rec Center, 1350 S. Sepulveda Blvd. (1 block south of Wilshire Blvd.). FREE PARKING and curbside voting! It will only take you a couple of minutes to vote!
  • John Wooden Center (on the UCLA campus)

ASSISTANCE: If you need a ride to vote, please leave a message at (310) 418-4335 and let us know.

Help get others to vote, too!  Every single vote is needed to defeat this student proposal.  Please ask your friends, family and colleagues to vote NO.

Who can vote? You do not have to be a registered voter! Anyone can vote in this May 22 election who is:

  1. 17 years or older, AND
  2. lives,
  3. works,
  4. owns real property OR
  5. is a community interest stakeholder.

What is a community interest stakeholder? This very broad category consists of anyone who “affirms a substantial and ongoing participation within the neighborhood council’s boundaries.” This includes:

  1. anyone who is a member of or participates in a local organization (such as the UCLA Alumni Association, Hammer Museum, Westwood Village Rotary, Friends of Westwood Library, Holmby Park Lawn Bowling Club, Geffen Playhouse subscribers, parishioner at a church or synagogue or other religious organization, bridge or garden club, etc.).
  2. anyone whose kids go to any school (UCLA, Warner, Fairburn, Emerson, any private schools, pre-schools, or after-school programs) or who belong to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little League, Soccer, etc., which is located in or meets in the Westwood area.
  3. anyone who frequently shops, eats, attends sports or arts events, classes, uses doctors, dry cleaners, or other services, does anything on the UCLA campus, goes to the Westwood Library, Westwood Park, the dog park or Rec Center, or Holmby Park, etc. – the key being to include the word “frequently” when describing this connection to Westwood.

The Holmby Westwood Board of Directors thanks you for your help and for your vote!

Sandy Brown
President, HWPOA

3.  DISABLED PARKING PLACARD CRACKDOWN

From Councilmember Paul Koretz:

In April, investigators with the California Department of Motor Vehicles issued misdemeanor citations to more than 380 people for fraudulently using disabled person parking placards.  According to the DMV, offenders had their placard confiscated and must appear in court to face possible finds ranging from $250 to $1,000 and will receive a notation on their driver record about the violation.

The DMV carries out as many as 24 enforcement operations each month in an effort to reduce the impact disabled person parking placard fraud has on the mobility of those with disabilities.

How does law enforcement know if someone might be misusing a Disabled Person Parking Placard?  Law enforcement verifies a disabled person parking placard by comparing its assigned number with its accompanying registration card, and a person’s driver license or identification card. Simply put, the person who is assigned the placard is the only one who can use it.

It is ILLEGAL to:

  • Lend your placard to someone else.
  • Forge a medical professional’s signature.
  • Use someone else’s placard.
  • Possess or display a counterfeit placard or license plates.
  • Provide false information to obtain a placard or license plates.
  • Alter a placard or placard registration card.

If you suspect someone may be fraudulently using a disabled person parking placard, contact your nearest DMV Investigations office, email the DMV at placard.misuse@dmv.ca.gov or complete the online reporting form available at www.dmv.ca.gov. If possible, provide the placard’s issuance number, make and model of the vehicle, its license plate number, and the location where the suspected abuse is occurring.

It is important to point out that not all disabilities are visible and allegations of misuse may be unfounded.

The DMV has posters, brochures and videos that are available for download at https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/about/dppp_outreach.

4.  METRO ROAD WORK UPDATE

Metro contractors are continuing advanced utility relocation (AUR) work on Westwood Blvd. beginning Friday, May 18 at 9pm through Monday, May 21 at 6am.  Westwood Blvd. will be closed from Wilshire Blvd. to Lindbrook Dr.

Nighttime work to complete AUR activities near Wilshire Blvd./Westwood Blvd. will continue Monday–Thursday from 9pm–6am. Nighttime work to complete AUR activities at the intersection of Wilshire/Westwood will occur Friday–Monday from 9pm–6am.

Excavation on Wilshire Blvd. will continue during weekends to support AUR work, which is expected to be completed in 2020.

5.  CURBSIDE BULKY ITEM PICKUP

From L.A. City Sanitation:

Did you know that your refuse bill already includes UNLIMITED bulky item pickups?  You can schedule bulky item pick-up in a variety of ways:

  • Use the MyLA311 app
  • Call our 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489
  • Call the City’s Hotline by dialing 3-1-1
  • Visit our website at www.lacitysan.org (LA Sanitation services only)
  • Visit the MyLA311 website at www.myla311.lacity.org (all City services)

We know that some residents like to place unwanted items outside in the hopes that someone in need may take it. While the gesture is very kind, it can quickly create blight in your neighborhood.  If your item could be used by someone else, we recommend calling a charity to pick up the item.  If it cannot be used again, then we ask that you call us to schedule pickup BEFORE placing the item curbside. Please note that items must be placed in plain view on the curb – we cannot pick up items on private property.

Whether the item is yours and you want to schedule a pickup OR the item was illegally dumped in your neighborhood, please reach out and we would be happy to assist you.

You can learn more about Bulky Items at http://bit.ly/bulkyitemsLA

6.  WALK SMART – PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

In the first four months of this year, 70% of pedestrian fatalities in the Valley were the fault of the pedestrian, according to LAPD. The main causes were crossing a street outside a designated crosswalk and distraction from talking or texting on their phones.

Please be mindful that while pedestrians have the right of way, being in the right won’t save you in a fight with a two ton machine.  Don’t Walk and Text!

1.  WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL – PLEASE VOTE

IMPORTANT!  YOUR VOTE NEEDED!
Election regarding Student Neighborhood Council

Dear Neighbors,

A group of UCLA students want to split up the Westwood Neighborhood Council community, gerrymandering out the single family neighborhoods and commandeering Westwood Village and the commercial area south of Wilshire.

The City is proceeding to the next step:  an election to determine if Westwood should be split up.

PLEASE VOTE “NO”

You can apply to VOTE BY MAIL today or vote in person on May 22.  (More info to follow regarding May 22).

Time is running out. People should apply for a Vote By Mail ballot only through this Saturday, May 12, at https://clerkappsele.lacity.org/vbmreg/#/vbm . The application for a Vote By Mail ballot must be received by the City Clerk by next Tuesday, May 15.

Our homeowner association hopes that you will file an application today with the City Clerk and vote “NO” when you receive your ballot in the mail from the City Clerk.  Your ballot must be received back by the City Clerk no later than May 22.

Every vote counts!  We have asked each family to get at least 5 votes from family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues.  If you are 17 or older, live, work, or own real property in Westwood, you are qualified to vote in this election.  If your nanny, gardener, house sitter, babysitter, or dog walker is a regular visitor, he/she would be a Community Interest Stakeholder and eligible to vote “No.” Also, if friends are regular patrons of The Geffen, Hammer, UCLA programs, our library, synagogues, or churches – they are also a Community Interest Stakeholder and can apply for a ballot to vote “No.”  This group includes anyone with “a substantial and ongoing participation with a group or organization” in the Westwood area.

When you fill out the application to the City Clerk, describe your interest (attend the Geffen) and in the “Stakeholder Address” line enter the organization’s address as (10886 LeConte).  Please use your personal address for the mailing address.

If you live, work, or own property in Westwood, you can vote – you are a “stakeholder.”

If you shop at grocery stores, attend classes in Westwood, belong to a synagogue or church, eat regularly in the Village, are subscribers at The Geffen or UCLA events, you can vote – you are a “Community Interest Stakeholder.”

File an application at:
https://clerkappsele.lacity.org/vbmreg/#/vbm

Your votes are crucial to keep Westwood ONE!

  • Keep neighborhood influence on development in Westwood Village
  • Preserve single family neighborhoods
  • Keep control of permit parking in our neighborhood
  • Keep Holmby Westwood’s input on traffic issues
  • Keep Westwood residential neighborhoods and Westwood Village together in a united Westwood Neighborhood Council!

The Holmby Westwood Board of Directors thanks you for your help and for your vote!

Sandy Brown
President, HWPOA

He said that during his absence, all email and voicemail messages would be periodically monitored by the West Los Angeles Senior Lead Office – most likely by SLO Maria Gray, who works primarily with the Brentwood area.

Should you need immediate assistance, please contact the West Los Angeles Senior Lead Office at 310-444-0735 or the LAPD’s Non-Emergency Dispatch at 1-877-ASK-LAPD (1-877-275-5273).

The 26th annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ “Stamp Out Hunger®” Food Drive is on Saturday, May 12.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May, a time of year when food bank stocks are dwindling—and it’s just before many school systems end their years, which can often mean a suspension in subsidized meals for many students. The drive is the largest one-day drive in the United States, taking place in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America. Letter carrier participation in the food drive is strictly voluntary.

Postal customers should leave bags of non-perishable food by their mailboxes well before the time their letter carriers make their normal mail pick-up and delivery. Food is then delivered to local food banks—and all food stays local.

2.  WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL – PLEASE VOTE

IMPORTANT!  YOUR VOTE NEEDED!
Election regarding Student Neighborhood Council

Dear Neighbors,

You might have been forwarded a letter from Douglas Emmett, Property Management (business interests, not homeowner interests) who has offices on Wilshire Blvd.  The letter asked you to vote “yes” for the new neighborhood council subdivision.

PLEASE VOTE “NO”

This is such an important issue that I want to follow up, and will continue to do so for the next few weeks to make sure we get the maximum number of votes to defeat this ill-conceived proposal.

A group of UCLA students want to split up the Westwood community, gerrymandering out the single family neighborhoods and commandeering Westwood Village and the commercial area south of Wilshire.

The City is proceeding to the next step:  an election to determine if Westwood should be split up.  You can apply to VOTE BY MAIL today or vote in person on May 22.  (More info to follow regarding May 22).  Our homeowner association hopes that you will file an application today with the City Clerk and vote “NO” when you receive your ballot in the mail from the City Clerk.  Your ballot must be received back by the City Clerk no later than May 22.

If you have trouble using the City Clerk’s online system for applying for a Vote By Mail ballot, or if you would prefer to have a print application form, please contact hwpoa@aol.com or call 310-470-1785.

Your votes are crucial to keep Westwood ONE!

  • Keep neighborhood influence on development in Westwood Village

We would like to know more about travel times, destinations and what’s most important to you when making this trip.

2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

CONSTRUCTION/REMODEL SITE BURGLARIES AND THEFTS

There has been a trend of Construction Site Burglaries and thefts developing in the Westwood area. The suspects are targeting construction and home remodel sites during the evening and night time hours or on weekends when the contractors and workers are not on site. Construction tools, equipment, appliances, and other valuables are being targeted and stolen. In cases where the tools and equipment have been secured in a steel lock box or connex storage container, the suspects have used cutting equipment or blow torches to cut into the secured metal containers to access the tools. In light of this trend the Los Angeles Police Department is making the following recommendations.

REMOVE ALL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FROM THE JOB SITE AT THE END OF THE WORK DAY. IF THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE THEN CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS:

ALARMS: Security Alarms should be installed on any structures or containers securing any tools and equipment.

  • AFTER HOURS SECURITY: Consider hiring a private security guard to monitor the site after hours and on weekends when there are no contractors or workers present.
  • SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS: Web based surveillance camera systems will allow homeowners and contractors to view and monitor activity from any smartphone or computer which are motion sensor activated and will alert your device when there is after hours activity. They also lend valuable information and clues to the investigation.
  • GATES: Ensure that all gates and access points to the construction site are locked and secured with heavy duty pad locks and chains.
  • LIGHTING: Ensure that appropriate flood lighting or motion sensor lighting is in place during the hours of darkness.
  • NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: Most construction burglaries are occurring in residential neighborhoods. Should neighbors of a residential construction site observe suspicious activities, CONTACT THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY! Should the activity escalate to what you believe to be a crime about to occur, crime in progress or crime that just occurred, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!

IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THE CONSTRUCTION BURGLARY TREND OR ANY OTHER CRIME, PLEASE CONTACT WEST LOS ANGELES BURGLARY DETECTIVES AT (310) 444-1522 OR 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) OR lacrimestoppers.org.

3.  WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL – PLEASE VOTE

Vote to support the Westwood Neighborhood Council

It is important to Holmby Westwood that you get your applications in to the City Clerk so that you can receive a ballot and vote “No” on dividing our community and handing Westwood Village over to the students so they can get “places to dance, listen to live music, or play pool….”.    We want a Village that serves everyone and it is a balance we must maintain.

To get a vote-by-mail ballot for this election, fill out this application: https://clerkappsele.lacity.org/vbmreg/#/vbm

Or if you wish to apply via regular mail, contact the homeowner office at hwpoa@aol.com or 310-470-1785 and we will get a hard copy application and stamped envelope to you so that you can fill it out and send it to the City Clerk.

All of the Westwood homeowner associations will be voting as well.  We look forward to a great response!

Many thanks!

Whether you need to update your registration or register to vote for the first time, it’s quick and easy at registertovote.ca.gov. If you’re not sure about your voter status, check at voterstatus.sos.ca.gov.

The day is finally here: the VA has a strategy for delivering 1,200 homes at the VA West LA campus for veterans and their families. Last Friday, VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System announced a proposal to enter into a 75-year lease with a principal developer in order to develop 1,200 homes for homeless veterans at the VA West LA campus and build a real veteran community.

5.  SAFE PARKING FOR VETERANS

We at VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) are committed to providing high-quality, safe and compassionate care to our Veterans.  Many homeless Veterans are currently living in their vehicles both on campus and in the community. We know that Veterans are more empowered to engage in services when they have a secure place to sleep without fear of relocation, citations or predatory activity. VA is grateful to be able to partner with Safe Parking L.A. to afford eligible Veterans an opportunity to sleep safely in their vehicles on the West L.A. campus, thereby facilitating access to the supportive services necessary to complete their transition into permanent housing.

The arrangement will start small with approximately 10 parking spaces but may grow as demand increases. VA remains committed to revitalizing the campus to a 21st Century, state-of-the-art home for our Veterans.  For questions or additional information, please contact VHAGLAMasterPlan@va.gov.
