1.  WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL – PLEASE VOTE

IMPORTANT!  YOUR VOTE NEEDED!
Election regarding Student Neighborhood Council

Dear Neighbors,

A group of UCLA students want to split up the Westwood Neighborhood Council community, gerrymandering out the single family neighborhoods and commandeering Westwood Village and the commercial area south of Wilshire.

The City is proceeding to the next step:  an election to determine if Westwood should be split up.

PLEASE VOTE “NO”

Vote by Mail (VBM) – The application period closed earlier this week.

  • If you have already voted by mail and returned your ballot, thanks!
  • If you have applied for a VBM ballot, but have not sent the actual ballot back to the City Clerk in the mail yet – Please mail your ballot no later than Saturday, May 19. The VBM ballots must be received by the City Clerk by May 22 (not just postmarked).

To vote in person:

DATE: This coming Tuesday, May 22, 2018
TIME:  2:00 pm – 8:00 pm
WHERE: There are 2 voting locations:

  • Westwood Rec Center, 1350 S. Sepulveda Blvd. (1 block south of Wilshire Blvd.). FREE PARKING and curbside voting! It will only take you a couple of minutes to vote!
  • John Wooden Center (on the UCLA campus)

ASSISTANCE: If you need a ride to vote, please leave a message at (310) 418-4335 and let us know.

Help get others to vote, too!  Every single vote is needed to defeat this student proposal.  Please ask your friends, family and colleagues to vote NO.

Who can vote? You do not have to be a registered voter! Anyone can vote in this May 22 election who is:

  1. 17 years or older, AND
  2. lives,
  3. works,
  4. owns real property OR
  5. is a community interest stakeholder.

What is a community interest stakeholder? This very broad category consists of anyone who “affirms a substantial and ongoing participation within the neighborhood council’s boundaries.” This includes:

  1. anyone who is a member of or participates in a local organization (such as the UCLA Alumni Association, Hammer Museum, Westwood Village Rotary, Friends of Westwood Library, Holmby Park Lawn Bowling Club, Geffen Playhouse subscribers, parishioner at a church or synagogue or other religious organization, bridge or garden club, etc.).
  2. anyone whose kids go to any school (UCLA, Warner, Fairburn, Emerson, any private schools, pre-schools, or after-school programs) or who belong to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little League, Soccer, etc., which is located in or meets in the Westwood area.
  3. anyone who frequently shops, eats, attends sports or arts events, classes, uses doctors, dry cleaners, or other services, does anything on the UCLA campus, goes to the Westwood Library, Westwood Park, the dog park or Rec Center, or Holmby Park, etc. – the key being to include the word “frequently” when describing this connection to Westwood.

The Holmby Westwood Board of Directors thanks you for your help and for your vote!

Sandy Brown
President, HWPOA

3.  DISABLED PARKING PLACARD CRACKDOWN

From Councilmember Paul Koretz:

In April, investigators with the California Department of Motor Vehicles issued misdemeanor citations to more than 380 people for fraudulently using disabled person parking placards.  According to the DMV, offenders had their placard confiscated and must appear in court to face possible finds ranging from $250 to $1,000 and will receive a notation on their driver record about the violation.

The DMV carries out as many as 24 enforcement operations each month in an effort to reduce the impact disabled person parking placard fraud has on the mobility of those with disabilities.

How does law enforcement know if someone might be misusing a Disabled Person Parking Placard?  Law enforcement verifies a disabled person parking placard by comparing its assigned number with its accompanying registration card, and a person’s driver license or identification card. Simply put, the person who is assigned the placard is the only one who can use it.

It is ILLEGAL to:

  • Lend your placard to someone else.
  • Forge a medical professional’s signature.
  • Use someone else’s placard.
  • Possess or display a counterfeit placard or license plates.
  • Provide false information to obtain a placard or license plates.
  • Alter a placard or placard registration card.

If you suspect someone may be fraudulently using a disabled person parking placard, contact your nearest DMV Investigations office, email the DMV at placard.misuse@dmv.ca.gov or complete the online reporting form available at www.dmv.ca.gov. If possible, provide the placard’s issuance number, make and model of the vehicle, its license plate number, and the location where the suspected abuse is occurring.

It is important to point out that not all disabilities are visible and allegations of misuse may be unfounded.

The DMV has posters, brochures and videos that are available for download at https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/about/dppp_outreach.

4.  METRO ROAD WORK UPDATE

Metro contractors are continuing advanced utility relocation (AUR) work on Westwood Blvd. beginning Friday, May 18 at 9pm through Monday, May 21 at 6am.  Westwood Blvd. will be closed from Wilshire Blvd. to Lindbrook Dr.

Nighttime work to complete AUR activities near Wilshire Blvd./Westwood Blvd. will continue Monday–Thursday from 9pm–6am. Nighttime work to complete AUR activities at the intersection of Wilshire/Westwood will occur Friday–Monday from 9pm–6am.

Excavation on Wilshire Blvd. will continue during weekends to support AUR work, which is expected to be completed in 2020.

5.  CURBSIDE BULKY ITEM PICKUP

From L.A. City Sanitation:

Did you know that your refuse bill already includes UNLIMITED bulky item pickups?  You can schedule bulky item pick-up in a variety of ways:

  • Use the MyLA311 app
  • Call our 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489
  • Call the City’s Hotline by dialing 3-1-1
  • Visit our website at www.lacitysan.org (LA Sanitation services only)
  • Visit the MyLA311 website at www.myla311.lacity.org (all City services)

We know that some residents like to place unwanted items outside in the hopes that someone in need may take it. While the gesture is very kind, it can quickly create blight in your neighborhood.  If your item could be used by someone else, we recommend calling a charity to pick up the item.  If it cannot be used again, then we ask that you call us to schedule pickup BEFORE placing the item curbside. Please note that items must be placed in plain view on the curb – we cannot pick up items on private property.

Whether the item is yours and you want to schedule a pickup OR the item was illegally dumped in your neighborhood, please reach out and we would be happy to assist you.

You can learn more about Bulky Items at http://bit.ly/bulkyitemsLA

6.  WALK SMART – PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

In the first four months of this year, 70% of pedestrian fatalities in the Valley were the fault of the pedestrian, according to LAPD. The main causes were crossing a street outside a designated crosswalk and distraction from talking or texting on their phones.

Please be mindful that while pedestrians have the right of way, being in the right won’t save you in a fight with a two ton machine.  Don’t Walk and Text!
