1.  STREET REPAIR REQUESTS

The Bureau of Street Services has scheduled a Small Asphalt Repairs (SAR) truck (which is described as 1 small asphalt repair truck, consisting of 2 workers and asphalt), for the Westwood Neighborhood Council area, to perform small asphalt repairs on August 26, 2019.

The Westwood Neighborhood Council has asked us to submit suggested locations in our neighborhood for small street repairs. The city will only send the SAR truck to a total of 15 locations in the entire Westwood Neighborhood Council area, so Holmby Westwood will only see a handful of repairs.

The type of repairs that can be addressed with this program include the following:
– Potholes and pop outs
– Skin patching of eroded or cracked areas
– Some repairs on concrete streets

If you are aware of any spots in our neighborhood that would be particularly good candidates for this program, please send requests to Dana at hwpoa@aol.com no later than Wednesday, August 7.  Please only send street repair requests, not sidewalks or curbs.

NOTE: Street repaving is not part of this program.  Please do not submit requests to repave streets.

4.  SEPULVEDA TRANSIT CORRIDOR – MEETING PRESENTATION

6.  LAPD NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

National Night Out is a community police-awareness-raising event in the United States, which is annually held on the first Tuesday in August.  National Night Out was created to increase awareness about police programs in communities.

There are several premieres coming up in Westwood, which will involve various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue:

8.  COMMUNITY POLICE ACADEMY

The Los Angeles Police Department invites you to attend the Community Police Academy. On August 14, 2019, Operations-West Bureau will conduct a Community Police Academy.

This eleven-week course will be held at Fox Towers, 2121 Avenue of the Stars. Los Angeles, CA 90067. The class will meet each Wednesday evening between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm. The course will conclude with a graduation ceremony. Successful completion of this session will provide community members with the minimum training needed to participate in the Community Volunteer Patrol Program.

The academy is designed to give community members an overview of the Los Angeles Police Department’s policies and procedures. The curriculum and teaching methods are similar to our traditional police academy.

Through the Community Police Academy, enrolled students will be encouraged to volunteer at their local police station and build a lasting partnership with the Department. Doing so will greatly contribute to our ultimate goal of reducing crime and improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods.

Each community member must meet the following criteria:

• Must be 18 years or older
• Live or work in Operations-West Bureau
• No prior felony convictions
• No outstanding warrants
• No pending criminal cases
• Must be approved by an Area Commanding Officer

9.  WESTSIDE IMPACT PROJECT – COMMUNITY MEETINGS

The Westside Impact Project aims to create a healthier and safer UCLA and Westside by reducing alcohol-related problems.   As a Westwood resident, your input is valued at our upcoming community meetings.

The Westside Impact Project is funded by the L.A. County Department of Public Health to reduce binge and underage drinking harms – two of the most serious public health challenges of our time.  We engage students and community members to advocate for solutions that optimize well-being, safety, and livability on and off the UCLA campus!

Coalition meetings are held every second Thursday of the month at UCLA Wooden Center – Leadership Conference Room.  Upcoming meeting schedule:

3.  POTENTIAL THIEVES POSING AS DWP WORKERS

A homeowner on Holmby Ave. reported an incident that occurred last Tuesday.  At approximately 5:00 PM, a person wearing a yellow utility vest without any indicia rang the front door bell, saying he was with DWP.    When asked what he wanted, his answer was not understandable and he had no ID badge showing.  The homeowners did not open the door; and the suspect walked away.  He left nothing to indicate why he was there (such as a DWP Notice of work being done in the area).   No DWP vehicle was noticed.

Please take precautions when supposed “workers” knock on your door. It is very common for suspects to wear safety vests similar to that worn by utility workers and Amazon delivery personnel while engaged in their crimes.  They tend to be overlooked by neighbors as “workers.”

4.  SEPULVEDA TRANSIT CORRIDOR – PUBLIC MEETINGS

Metro is making strides to improve travel between the San Fernando Valley, the Westside and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The goal of the Sepulveda Transit Corridor Feasibility Study is to identify and evaluate rail transit concepts that will provide high-quality service to the large and growing travel market between the San Fernando Valley, the Westside and the LAX area. At these meetings, Metro will present new information about the Valley-Westside and the Westside-LAX segments.

7.  STAYING COOL IN THE SUMMER HEAT

Summer in Los Angeles invariably means long hot days. While the warm climate is one of the reasons we all love our city, excessive exposure to heat can be dangerous, especially for the elderly, young children, and pets.

Key Rules: Drink plenty of water before you become thirsty and rest in the shade before you become tired. Limit your exposure to direct sunlight between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, when the sun’s rays are strongest. Reschedule outdoor work and strenuous activities until the coolest time of the day. If indoors, cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades or awnings.

If you feel ill, tell someone immediately. Symptoms of dehydration and heat illness may include dizziness, fatigue, faintness, nausea, muscle cramps, headache and vomiting.

Many heat emergencies occur to people exercising, working, or staying alone. Use a buddy system and check on older adults, frail or at-risk neighbors at least twice a day. If you suspect someone is experiencing a medical emergency from extreme heat exposure, call 9-1-1.

If your home does not have air conditioning, visit a cool place during the hottest part of the day!

Schools, libraries, theaters, shopping malls and community facilities such as senior centers and recreation centers can offer an air-conditioned refuge. When there is extreme hot weather, designated cooling centers may be opened in the County and City of Los Angeles. To determine their status and location, call 3-1-1 or visit the Emergency Management Division’s Beat the Heat website.

Pets are also susceptible to hot weather. See that the special needs of your animals are met, including copious shade and plenty of cool water.

LA Animal Services offers these tips for ensuring pets are safe from the heat:

1. Never leave your pet alone inside a vehicle
2. Give your pet extra water
3. Avoid hot ground surfaces
4. Don’t leave your pet outdoors for a long time
5. Know the signs of overheating

1.  JULY 4th – SPECIAL THANKS TO ESTHER MAGNA

A Special “shout out” to Esther Magna

A huge thank you to Esther Magna and her team for the spectacular July 4th Parade and Picnic!!  I heard so many wonderful comments at Warner Ave. School where the parade got underway as well as at Holmby Park.  This is a volunteer effort that Esther has championed for many years and has always made it seem like smooth sailing even when the waters got a little rough.  Our families and their pets seemed so proud to celebrate this country and love of our community.   It is, indeed, very special.

The Westwood Village Farmers’ Market hours are changing from noon to 6:00pm to noon to 5:00pm.  The Farmers’ Market is held every Thursday on Broxton Ave.

5.  DOG OWNER ETIQUETTE

A few reminders regarding dog walking – please be sure to remind everyone  in your household that walks your dog – children, housekeepers, dog walkers, etc.

Keep Dogs on a Leash
For the safety of your neighbors, children and other dogs, please keep your dog on a leash at all times when you are outside of your home.  We have had several past reports of dog attacks in the neighborhood, injuring both people and dogs.  Please follow the law and keep your dog on a leash.

Use Your Own Trash Bins
While everyone appreciates that you are picking up dog waste, please dispose of it in your own trash bin.  Please be respectful and do not use your neighbors’ bins.

GROUP FOR PEOPLE WITH A CHRONIC LUNG CONDITION

I host a meeting every other month for people with chronic lung conditions other than TB or cancer. It’s a very informal support and information group, free of charge, which has been ongoing for about 15 years. The meetings bring together people who all share a common health problem, so we can feel completely comfortable talking about our lung issues in a warm, supportive environment. Each of us has a history of diagnosis, treatment, and day-to-day experience that is very helpful for answering our questions and getting the benefit of people’s personal experience. Even with the best of doctors, this is an invaluable service.

We are affiliated with a national non-profit organization, NTM Info & Research (NTMir), formed on behalf of patients with pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease for the purpose of patient support, medical education, and research. The organization comprises patients, physicians and other medical practitioners, and researchers.

Our group is open to all and the next meeting will be on Monday, July 22, at 1:15 p.m., at my house, 641 Warner Avenue, in Westwood.

LAPD SAFETY REMINDERS
An unfortunate theft occurred recently and it requires a discussion, a reminder, some food for thought…

As a nice lady was loading her groceries into her car at Ralph’s market in Brentwood, a thief took advantage of the situation and grabbed her purse from off the front seat of her car and fled with it.  Gone, in an instant.  Brazen, and unfortunately, all too common.   And while I’ve recently talked about thefts by contractors or sub-contractors, or unattended cell phones/laptops stolen from coffeehouse tables, there are many other types of thefts that you need to be protecting yourself from.

Beyond the all too familiar incidents of shoplifting, mail/package thefts, identity thefts, there are also less familiar thefts happening all the time.  Thefts such as tools stolen from construction sites, equipment stolen off the flatbeds of landscaper’s trucks, yard art stolen from our front yards, wallets stolen from the work place, purses stolen from within vehicles while the victim is turned gassing their car.  Scrap metals convert into a significant amount of recycling money.  The problem is, it’s not scrap!  It’s YOUR stolen catalytic converter, or it’s the stolen copper wiring in YOUR neighborhood’s utility system or it’s the stolen manhole cover that YOUR vehicle tire falls into.

If it’s not nailed down, you must teach yourself and your family to believe, to really BELIEVE, that someone will be there to take it the minute you look away, the minute you forget to put it away, the minute it’s within grasp of a thief’s sticky fingers.  And since offenders are not getting the jail time they would once have (property criminals are being released early or, in many cases, not incarcerated at all to make room for the overflowing number of violent criminals) they are more likely to lift your wallet from the shopping cart, or to take your purse from your car as you load groceries, or to create a ruse so that when you look left, they take what’s on your right.  Lastly, to the very nice Brentwood lady whose world was turned upside down in an instant, it’s not your fault in the least.  Not at all.  But what we must take from this experience is that we must live differently, we must live, defensively.  Please be careful out there.

3.  LARGE CRANE NEAR HILLEL THIS WEEKEND

This Saturday, July 13, UCLA Hillel (located on Hilgard near Strathmore) will be swapping out the HVAC unit on the roof for a new unit.  This will require the use of a large crane.

The Christian Science Church next door is graciously allowing the crew to operate the crane from their parking lot, so they won’t be blocking any streets.  They’ll be starting around 7:00am and continuing through most of the day — all the major exterior work will be completed on Saturday.

6.  PROPOSAL TO KEEP BARS OPEN UNTIL 4:00 AM

From The Westwood-Century City Patch:

City Councilman Paul Koretz renewed his opposition Tuesday to a state bill that would allow bars in select cities to remain open until 4 a.m., pointing to a report concluding the move would cost Los Angeles millions of dollars a year in public-safety and other costs.

“There are a lot of arguments being thrown around and even some making the case that drinking for two additional hours makes them safer drivers, which is about the most absurd thing that I’ve ever heard,” Koretz said. “While we want our local businesses to thrive, no good can come from serving alcohol until 4 a.m.”

7.  WESTSIDE IMPACT PROJECT – COMMUNITY MEETINGS

The Westside Impact Project aims to create a healthier and safer UCLA and Westside by reducing alcohol-related problems.   As a Westwood resident, your input is valued at our upcoming community meetings.

The Westside Impact Project is funded by the L.A. County Department of Public Health to reduce binge and underage drinking harms – two of the most serious public health challenges of our time.  We engage students and community members to advocate for solutions that optimize well-being, safety, and livability on and off the UCLA campus!

2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

BURGLARY – ATTEMPTED

From the LAPD in regard to the above incident:
A woman, alone at home, heard a smashing of her rear window.  A Male, Black suspect, clean cut, in his 20’s, tall, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt was attempting to get in by using a hammer.  He obviously did not expect to see anyone home so when he saw her he fled.  The officers canvassed the area for the suspect but had negative results.  She was not injured.  No property taken.  An attempt burglary report was taken.

LAPD SECURITY ADVICE:
Summer is here. And although we are currently considerably down in crime, we certainly want to keep it that way. The biggest challenge to that reduction is happening NOW. Historically, summertime results in a spike period for criminal activity throughout the City. Windows are left open more often, vacations and getaways are happening, kids are out of school (including the bad ones), and the longer, warmer, lazy days of summer seem to go hand in hand with an increased degree of complacency.

So, while crime is, in fact, down, we still need to stay vigilant with our home and vehicle security, especially now.

Recently, I watched a surveillance video of a car theft at a home in Brentwood. As I watched the video, like I’ve watched hundreds of comparable videos over the years, it still managed to elicit in me a degree of wonder and awe at the audacity and brazenness of the thieves.

And then a thought occurred to me: we really should be sharing these videos with each other, among the community-to bring it home, to make folks really believe and fully understand that while they’re asleep in their beds, or at work during the day, burglars and thieves are always, always, out there, at their jobs, doing what they do best. For this reason, I encourage this practice of sharing, not just with the LAPD, but with one another.

To watch a hooded suspect scale your (or your neighbor’s) fence and then to rummage through your belongings is an eye-opening and unsettling experience, to say the least. It WILL make you live your life a bit differently. It WILL make you more cautious and careful about securing your homes and to never leave anything visible behind in your car. This is a lesson you don’t want your family to have to learn the hard way.

4.  FOOD TRUCKS AT HOLMBY PARK EVENTS

Parking large vehicles such as food trucks around Holmby Park is prohibited (according to the sign below).  Most of the daily “lunch trucks” have moved down the street as a result of the new parking rules.  However, we are now seeing some food trucks parked in their place as they have been hired by park users for parties and other events.

If you are hosting an event at the park, please do not hire a food truck to feed your guests.  It is illegal for the trucks to park there.  Thank you.

5.  HOME-SHARING ORDINANCE – REGISTER WITH CITY

Interested Parties:

The City’s Home-Sharing Ordinance was adopted in December 2018 and will be active beginning July 1, 2019. The ordinance requires hosts who wish to engage in short-term rentals to register with the City and post their registration number on all advertisements.

The City’s Home-Sharing Registration Portal will be available for hosts to begin registering this coming Monday, July 1, 2019. Hosts who are currently operating will have until October 31, 2019, to register before the City begins taking enforcement measures. Hosts can register at any time during the July 1 to October 31, 2019 period.

Information on the registration process, including details on eligibility criteria and required documentation, is available on the Department of City Planning’s website.

Let us put you on the map!  The WVIA is seeking submissions from an LA artist to create artwork for the Westwood Village Map + Directory!

The chosen artist will receive a Dinner For Two at Broxton Brewery & Public House and a One Night Stay at the W Hotel!

Artwork must be original and Westwood Village inspired. Let our rich history and even brighter future be your muse. Mediums may include Paintings, Illustrations, Photography, and/or Collage.

8.  JULY 4th DOG AND PET SAFETY

Fireworks, picnics and other Fourth of July traditions can be great fun for people; but all of the festivities can be frightening and even dangerous for animals. Noisy fireworks and other celebrations can startle animals and cause them to run away; holiday foods can be unhealthy; summer heat and travel can be dangerous; and potentially dangerous debris can end up lying on the ground where pets can eat or play with it.

Whether or not you’re planning your own Independence Day celebration, it’s important to take precautions to keep your pets safe both during and after the July 4th festivities.

L.A. Sanitation Open House  (aka Garbage Truck Day) – Saturday, June 29 from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM at the West L.A. District Yard located at 2027 Stoner.  Come join the dynamic duo “Mr. Recycle” and sidekick “Robo Blue” as they jump into action to serve family fun, food and prizes for kids.

The Open House will feature trash trucks and equipment demonstrations in addition to facility tours, information booths, recycling games, and refreshments. There is no charge for admission and all ages are welcome, but we do request that pets be left at home for safety. Free food and giveaways are available while supplies last.

2.  LADWP PROJECT – SUNSET BLVD. LANE CLOSURES

Construction start date has been moved to TUESDAY JUNE 25, starting at 9:00am. You may have noticed digital construction signs have been posted throughout the area in preparation.

Our goal is to get as much construction done over the summer while students are on summer vacation. There may be times when we extend the working hours to expedite construction. We recognize that traffic is a big concern and Traffic Control Officers from LADOT will be located throughout the work zones to help with traffic flow.

As a reminder, we will be working in increments along Sunset Blvd, not along the entire stretch of Sunset. And two lanes will be open in each direction – one eastbound and one westbound lane – throughout construction. At the end of each work day, all lanes will be opened back up.

A homeowner reported that last Monday morning, she witnessed a man steal her recently delivered newspaper from her driveway.  The homeowner was on the second story and by the time she ran downstairs and outside, the man was gone.  The thief was wearing workout attire.

Join us for the first concert in the 2019 Season of our popular FREE Concert Series @ Westwood Library, featuring the virtuoso SWING BAND of the LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT BAND, with a terrific pre-Independence Day concert. We’ll be upstairs in the library on a Sunday afternoon when the library is not open for regular business.

The LAPD BAND’s 17-person SWING BAND, under the baton of Maestro Richard Allen, will be accompanied by singers for a fabulous program of American popular music from the World War II era — in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day this June. Don’t miss this lively pre-Fourth of July celebration. Fun for your whole family!

Admission is FREE, with FREE parking at the library. Library garage and doors open at 2 PM. Concerts last approximately one hour, with no intermission. After the concert, meet the musicians and enjoy a complimentary reception hosted by FELLOW Restaurant and the Friends of Westwood Library.

9.  CONGRESSIONAL YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL

Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) started California’s 33rd Congressional District’s inaugural Youth Advisory Council (YAC) in early 2018. YAC students will meet with a diverse group of peers from their community to discuss issues of importance and consider ways of getting involved locally. The YAC will work directly with staff in Rep. Lieu’s office to collaborate on key issues for young people in California’s 33rd District.

Students in 9th through 12th grade that live or attend school in the district are eligible to apply.  Deadline to apply: Friday, July 19, 2019 by 5PM.

4.  LADWP PROJECT – SUNSET BLVD. LANE CLOSURES

LADWP is planning construction to add more circuits that will increase electric capacity in the greater Bel Air/Holmby Westwood area. This is a much-needed upgrade that will improve reliability in the Bel Air, Beverly Crest, Westwood, and Holmby Hills neighborhoods.

Construction on Sunset Blvd will begin
Tuesday June 18, 2019 at 9:00am.

A few reminders:

• Construction hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 3:30pm and Saturday 8:00am through 6:00pm.
• You can expect to see crews working primarily in the middle two lanes on Sunset Blvd.
• During construction, at least one lane will be open in each direction to maintain both eastbound and westbound traffic flow.
• At the end of each work day, all lanes will be reopened to traffic.

Crews will be working simultaneously at the following locations:

• Sunset between the 405 Freeway and Bellagio Rd. Crews will begin work near the 405, working about 500 feet at a time and progressing eastward toward Bellagio Rd.
• Sunset between S. Beverly Glen Blvd. and Carolwood Dr.

7.  LAX-UCLA FLYAWAY BUS SERVICE ENDING SOON

From the L.A. Times:

The LAX FlyAway bus between UCLA/Westwood and the airport will end June 30 because of low ridership.

The Westside service had the lowest service rating — considering ridership and cost effectiveness — of the five FlyAway stops, an L.A. World Airports report dated May 16 showed. Tickets cost $10 each way to and from the stop at Gayley Avenue and Strathmore Place.

One reason for the decline cited in the report was the $12 daily parking fee at the UCLA lot closest to the stop. Focus-group participants asked about FlyAway service said they’d rather take a ride-share such as Uber or Lyft that takes them door to door for less money than it would cost to take the bus and pay for parking, the report said.

L.A. Airport Commissioners voted to discontinue the Westwood route and focus instead on increasing ridership on the Long Beach route.

9.  SWING BAND PRE-JULY 4th CONCERT – FREE!

Join us for the first concert in the 2019 Season of our popular FREE Concert Series @ Westwood Library, featuring the virtuoso SWING BAND of the LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT BAND, with a terrific pre-Independence Day concert. We’ll be upstairs in the library on a Sunday afternoon when the library is not open for regular business.

The LAPD BAND’s 17-person SWING BAND, under the baton of Maestro Richard Allen, will be accompanied by singers for a fabulous program of American popular music from the World War II era — in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day this June. Don’t miss this lively pre-Fourth of July celebration. Fun for your whole family!

Admission is FREE, with FREE parking at the library. Library garage and doors open at 2 PM. Concerts last approximately one hour, with no intermission. After the concert, meet the musicians and enjoy a complimentary reception hosted by FELLOW Restaurant and the Friends of Westwood Library.

10.  COMMUNITY POLICE ADVISORY BOARD MEETING

Community-Police Advisory Boards (C-PABs) were created in 1993 to provide community members with an opportunity to provide information and advice to their respective Area and to take information from the police department back to the community.

This advisory group meets monthly to discuss crime and quality of life issues.

For our Tuesday, June 25th meeting our guest speaker will be the Program Director of (DART) Domestic Response Team. CDLF Counseling partners with West LA as part of the Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART) to provide immediate crisis response and follow-ups to DV survivors and their families. They provide mental health services to individuals/families who have experience trauma. This included individual counseling and support groups. In addition, we provide training to those individuals who would like to become domestic violence counselors.

This will be an interesting program that I know you will find informative, helpful as well as interesting. Also, our C-PAB member, Cindy Kane will be providing dinner so please arrive early if you can.

Warner Brothers will be holding the red carpet and after party for the world premiere of Annabelle Comes Home on Thursday, June 20th. The premiere will be held at the Village Theater and the after party in the parking lot at 900 Broxton.

2.  CENTURY CITY ROAD CLOSURE THIS WEEKEND

Traffic / Road Closure Alert:
Southbound Avenue of the Stars will be closed starting this Friday, June 7 and will be reopened by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, June 10.

This closure will be for the removal of the tower crane for the new Century Plaza Hotel. Northbound access on Avenue of the Stars will remain open throughout the southbound closure. Constellation between Century Park West and Avenue of the Stars will also remain open.

5.  LADWP POWER UPGRADE PROJECT

Hello Little Holmby residents,

As you may know, LADWP is planning construction to add more circuits that will increase electric capacity in the greater Bel Air/Holmby Westwood area. This is a much-needed upgrade that will improve reliability in the Bel Air, Beverly Crest, Westwood, and Holmby Hills neighborhoods.

Construction on Sunset Blvd will begin Tuesday June 18, 2019 at 9:00am.

A few reminders:

• Construction hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 3:30pm and Saturday 8:00am through 6:00pm.
• You can expect to see crews working primarily in the middle two lanes on Sunset Blvd.
• During construction, at least one lane will be open in each direction to maintain both eastbound and westbound traffic flow.
• At the end of each work day, all lanes will be reopened to traffic.

Crews will be working simultaneously at the following locations:

• Sunset between the 405 Freeway and Bellagio Rd. Crews will begin work near the 405, working about 500 feet at a time and progressing eastward toward Bellagio Rd.
• Sunset between S. Beverly Glen Blvd. and Carolwood Dr.

6.  WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL ELECTION

Election results were posted on Tuesday for the WWNC.  It was a great turn-out with approximately 1150 voters who arrived at Belmont Village to support the Team Westwood or Westwood 2020 slate.  This was an especially important election as the newly elected Council will shape the next 4 years of Westwood as opposed to the previous council whose term was 2 years.

A huge thank you to those who showed up on election day!  Your commitment to preserving our community is important!

Sarah Lucas Exhibition Opening Celebration – Saturday, June 8, 8–11 p.m. at the Hammer Museum.  Join us to celebrate the opening of Sarah Lucas: Au Naturel. This is the first American survey of one of the UK’s most influential artists.

DTLA Donut Fest – Saturday, June 8, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Union Station (in downtown LA).  Attention fans of sugary fried rings of deliciousness!
