1.  TRAFFIC ALERT – FRIDAY NEAR HOLMBY PARK

Holmby Westwood residents should expect some unpredictable road closures and traffic delays through the weekend as President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden arrive in Los Angeles for a weekend of fundraisers.

On Friday, December 8, the President is expected to attend a fundraiser at a home on Mapleton Dr. near Holmby Park.  In addition, several pro-Palestinian organizations have scheduled a protest at Holmby Park beginning at 3:30 PM.

The LAPD is aware of the situation and have told us that they are prepared and taking all necessary precautions.

There will be No Parking on streets surrounding Holmby Park and some roads will be closed.  Please plan your day/evening accordingly.

The president is slated to fly into Los Angeles International Airport shortly before 5 p.m. Friday before making his way to the Westside by helicopter and motorcade. Commuters should prepare for possible closures on side streets around the Santa Monica Airport, the San Diego (405) or Santa Monica (10) freeways. The specifics of the presidential travel plans and fundraising agenda remain vague for security reasons.

3.  UPCOMING PREMIERE IN WESTWOOD – STREET CLOSURES

On Sunday, December 10, 2023 at 3:00 PM, Warner Bros will hold the premiere of “Wonka” at the Regency Village Theater in Westwood Village at 961 Broxton Avenue.

This event will involve various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue.

4.  LAPD & LAFD HOLIDAY TOY DRIVES

LA Fire Station #71 at Beverly Glen and Sunset as well as the LAPD station at 1663 Butler just off Santa Monica Blvd. are collecting new, still boxed, unwrapped toys or sporting goods for children for the holidays.  They can be dropped off at either station for deserving children who otherwise might not receive gifts.  You’ll know someone’s holiday will be brighter because of you!

There are several ways to make a donation to the annual Spark of Love Holiday Toy Drive, sponsored by the Los Angeles Fire Dept. and ABC7:

  • Bring a new unwrapped toy or sporting good to your local Fire Station
  • Text the word “SPARK” to 24365. An instant reply provides a link to make a secure credit card donation.
  • Donate by mail: Make your check payable to the non-profit LAFD Foundation and write SPARK OF LOVE on the memo line. Mail to: LAFD Foundation, 1700 Stadium Way #100, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Toys will be sent to the Spark of Love Toy Central at Los Angeles City Fire, where they will be sanitized, sorted and distributed evenly to Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange, Ventura and Riverside counties. All proceeds will go to buying toys or sports equipment for the children and teens in need.

5.  DONATE BLOOD & PLATELETS

Donate Blood at the UCLA Blood & Platelet Center
Please consider donating blood at an upcoming blood drive. Your donation could make a real difference in the life of someone in need. Donating blood takes just one hour of your time. Donating platelets takes approximately two and a half to three hours. The impact of your donation lasts a lifetime.

CAP UCLA – Preview for 2024

2023 brought plenty of good tidings at CAP UCLA with the debut of our newest venue, the UCLA Nimoy Theater. We thank everyone who has already joined us for a show and are eager to welcome even more artists and guests to The Nimoy, Royce Hall and The Theatre at Ace Hotel in 2024!

A few standouts include:

  • Senegalese kora player Ablaye Cissoko and French accordionist and composer Cyrille Brotto who unite on stage to create an exotic, yet strikingly contemporary cross-cultural sound.
  • Composer Nico Muhly and librettist Alice Goodman present their latest project, The Street. Performed by harpist Parker Ramsay and soprano Jennifer Ellis Kampani and narrated by Mia Barron, it portrays a man’s wrongful condemnation and suffering in Jerusalem.
  • Singer / songwriter and UCLA alum, India Carney curates and performs in a two-night celebration of music featuring some of L.A.’s trailblazing young artists.
  • Contemporary Latin American jazz vocalist, Magos Herrera presents her latest work Aire – transforming grief and loneliness into luminous songs.
  • Meshell Ndegeocello continues her exploration of the challenges and promises of the work of writer and civil rights activist, James Baldwin with No More Water / The Fire Next Time; The Gospel of James Baldwin.
