1.  HWPOA BOARD MEETING – CANCELED

This month’s HWPOA Board meeting has been canceled due to lack of a quorum (many board members are traveling).  Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, September 12.

Updated information will be posted at the beginning of September.

2.  LADWP UPDATE – OUTDOOR WATERING DAYS

As a result of all your water conservation efforts during the statewide water emergency mandate over the past year and a record snowpack created by the unprecedented amount of precipitation earlier this year, the City of Los Angeles has returned to three-days-a-week outdoor watering under the City’s Phase 2 Emergency Water Conservation Ordinance.

As of July 27, 2023, all LADWP customers can go back to watering three days a week on designated days:

  • Customers with street addresses ending in odd numbers may water on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays;
  • Customers with even-numbered street addresses may water on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Watering is allowed before 9:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m., when the evaporation rate is appreciably lower than during the middle of the day.
  • Don’t forget to adjust your irrigation controller to add the additional day to your watering schedule, if needed.

Watering Days – Click here for more information

Hand watering is allowed regardless of watering day, before 9 a.m. and after 4 p.m., if the hose is equipped with a self-closing water shut-off device.

The following water conservation practices continue to be in place under Phase 2:

  • Limiting outdoor watering with sprinklers to eight minutes per station on permitted watering days
  • Watering with sprinklers using water-conserving nozzles are permitted for up to 15 minutes, twice a day, on the permitted watering day
  • No water should flow off of your property
  • No water should leak from any pipe or fixture
  • No watering within 48 hours after a measurable rain event
  • No hosing down of driveway or sidewalk
  • No washing of vehicles using a hose without a self-closing nozzle

3.  UCLA BOTANICAL GARDEN NEWSLETTER

Dear Garden Friends,

August arrives with record-breaking heat waves. My heart goes out to the individuals and communities who are suffering from this crisis, both here in LA and worldwide. It is a reminder that we must change our policies and practices to mitigate the urgent threat of climate change.

On a local level, I can report that our crucial water efficiency project is underway. The team finished hauling concrete from the old stream structure. They are now preparing the site for the new stream and irrigation system. We encourage you to explore other areas of the Garden as we wait for Spring 2024 to see our beautified stream.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our Outreach and Education staff for the success of our July public programming. Stay alert for more free community events as well as member-exclusive opportunities. In the meanwhile, please join us for a free guided tour on August 12 at 10 a.m.

We’ll see you in the Garden soon!
