Happy Holidays from HWPOA

Dear Neighbors,

The Holmby Westwood Board of Directors would like to wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday season!

This past year has been challenging for everyone as we worked together to keep our community safe and strong. And the tough times are not yet over. But with the support of our HWPOA community, we’ll be stronger on the other side.

Thank you for your membership to HWPOA! We’re grateful for the continued trust you place in us. We look to the challenges ahead with determination and understanding of our responsibility in ensuring that the Holmby Westwood neighborhood receives the city support and protections we deserve.

Best wishes for a safe holiday season and a happy, healthy new year. Our next newsletter will be sent out in 2022.

Sincerely,
Your HWPOA Board of Directors

2.  SECURITY REMINDERS – VACATION TIPS

Thanks to Westwood Hills POA and Brentwood Homeowners for the following list of safety tips:

  • Porch pirates are in maximum overdrive. Remove your packages as soon as possible from your front door, and have a friend check your house daily if you’re planning on being away. If you work at an office that will be staffed while you are away, have your packages delivered to the office address. Amazon packages can be delivered to a nearby Amazon locker.
  • Make sure trash cans are not left out after trash day.
  • Two cars always in the driveway, with lots of dust, are one indicator you may be away.
  • Newspapers and mail piling up is another indicator that you are away. Stop service while you’re away, or have a friend pick up for you every day.
  • If you’re home and hear an unexpected knock, answer from inside and say, “we” can’t open the door right now. It lets possible criminals know you are not a good target. Barking dogs are also a great deterrent.
  • Alarms on, windows locked, when you are away, even if it’s just a short errand.
  • Put your indoor and outdoor lights on timers, so they will go on regardless of whether or not you are in town. This is also a great way to ensure that you never come home to a dark house at night.
  • Ladder on the side of the house? Many criminals access second floors using items on your property. Keep access points to your backyard and sideyards locked or otherwise not easily accessible to criminals.
  • Don’t leave items visible in cars, and certainly do not leave your key fobs in your cars.

3.  TIPS FOR A COVID-SAFE HOLIDAY SEASON

From the Los Angeles County Dept. of Public Health:

4.  CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING

LA Sanitation has curbside collection for Christmas trees to make it convenient to properly and safely recycle your tree.

If your Christmas tree is too big to cut and place inside the green waste bin, simply place the tree next to your green waste bin on collection day.

How to Recycle your Christmas tree and put in the green bin:

  1.  REMOVE all ornaments, decorations, tinsels and stand from the tree.
  2.  CUT the tree into pieces, if needed, to fit into green bin.
  3.  PLACE the tree pieces inside the green bin and put out for regular pick-up on collection day.

*Flock or artificial trees can’t be recycled – place them in the black container.

Collected Christmas trees will be recycled into compost and mulch that is available to residents for free.

What else can be recycled at the holidays?
Conventional gift wrapping paper may use glitter, foil, or a laminate to make it more durable and appealing; nonetheless, these items cannot be easily removed for recycling. There are some exceptions including holiday packaging like cartons, cardboard, certain plastics and gift boxes can be placed in the blue bin for recycling.

5.  NEW CALIFORNIA LAWS FOR 2022

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

A slew of laws takes effect in 2022, affecting everything from how you vote and shop to whether you get ketchup with your fries.
