2.  CAUTION – DO NOT ABBREVIATE 2020

From USA Today:

The new year is giving scammers an easy way to forge documents, but you can protect yourself with an easy New Year’s resolution: Stop abbreviating the year.

Why? This year’s abbreviation is easily changeable and could be used against you. The concern is that scammers could easily manipulate a document dated “1/1/20” into “1/1/2000” or even “1/1/2021.”

Writing out the full date “could possibly protect you and prevent legal issues on paperwork,” according to Hamilton County, Ohio, Auditor Dusty Rhodes.

3.  ANOTHER LITTLE HOLMBY TREE PLANTING EVENT

Don’t forget that the Holmby Westwood Green Team is planting 22 new Canary Island Pines on three blocks of Dalehurst Avenue next Saturday, January 11 from 9 am to 12 noon.   All Holmby Westwood residents (including children and high school students) are invited to join us at 523 Dalehurst for a tree planting demonstration, followed by the actual tree planting and a naming ceremony for each tree.  Residents can do a lot or a little at the planting but neighborhood support and encouragement for the TreePeople volunteers will be welcome.  Refreshments will be available.  Start 2020 off right and come plant or cheer and enjoy your neighbors as we make beautiful Dalehurst even more beautiful.

Parking will be relaxed by the City from 8 am to 1pm on Warner Avenue between Hilgard and Loring Avenues and on Loring Avenue between Warner and Wyton.

For questions or to find out more about the Greening Holmby Westwood effort, please contact Marnie Bodek (mossbodek@msn.com) or Juliana Bancroft (julianabancroft10@gmail.com)

4.  CALIFORNIA “REAL ID” DEADLINE

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

Tick, tock! The deadline for obtaining your REAL ID will be here before you know it. Here’s what you need to know if you don’t yet have one.

The year is just about here. California drivers’ licenses and state identification cards must be REAL ID compliant in late 2020 as state-issued ID cards fall in line with federal standards. Starting Oct 1., 2020, drivers’ licenses and state IDs that are not REAL ID compliant will not be accepted as identification by federal authorities.

What’s more, the California DMV is using the New Year’s holiday as a reminder to state residents to get their new identification cards before time runs out, encouraging those who live in the Golden State to make it their resolution to get a REAL ID.

5.  2020 HOMELESS COUNT – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Every January, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) conducts a census of the homeless population through the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count. The Count helps us better understand homelessness in our region and direct fiscal and staffing resources where they’re needed most. LAHSA needs at least 8,000 volunteers to canvas more than 80 cities and 200 communities across LA County.

You can now register for the Count, which will take place January 21st through January 23rd.  The count in our area will take place on January 22, 2020 – West Los Angeles, Southeast Los Angeles, & the South Bay (Service Planning Areas 5, 7, & 8)

Volunteer now – click here

6.  HELP WANTED – JOIN THE 2020 CENSUS TEAM

The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting to fill hundreds of thousands of positions across the country to assist with the 2020 Census count.  Los Angeles County is hiring for a variety of temporary jobs, including census takers, recruiting assistants, office staff, and supervisory staff.

Candidates are invited to fill out an online job application. The application includes assessment questions about your education, work, and other experience.

7.  UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

How to Be an Antiracist: Ibram X. Kendi – Wednesday, Jan. 8, 7:30 p.m. at the Hammer Museum.  Guggenheim Fellow and National Book Award–winner Ibram X. Kendi re-energizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice. In his 2019 memoir, How to Be an Antiracist, he weaves together an electrifying combination of ethics, history, law, and science—including the story of his own awakening to antiracism—bringing it all together as “a confessional of self-examination that may, in fact, be our best chance to free ourselves from our national nightmare” (Jeffrey Stewart).  Click here for more information.
