1.  HWPOA BOARD MEETING

On Tuesday, February 12 at 7:30 PM, the HWPOA Board of Directors will hold its monthly meeting at Belmont Village, 10475 Wilshire Blvd.  Please click here to see the agenda.

Members of the community are welcome to attend, though space is limited. Please let us know if you plan to attend.  Email Dana at hwpoa@aol.com.

2.  STREET REPAIR REQUESTS

The Bureau of Street Services has scheduled a Small Asphalt Repairs (SAR) truck (which is described as 1 small asphalt repair truck, consisting of 2 workers and asphalt), for the Westwood Neighborhood Council area, to perform small asphalt repairs on February 27, 2019.

The Westwood Neighborhood Council has asked us to submit suggested locations in our neighborhood for small street repairs. The city will only send the SAR truck to a total of 15 locations in the entire Westwood Neighborhood Council area, so Holmby Westwood will only see a handful of repairs.

The type of repairs that can be addressed with this program include the following:
– Potholes and pop outs
– Skin patching of eroded or cracked areas
– Some repairs on concrete streets

If you are aware of any spots in our neighborhood that would be particularly good candidates for this program, please send requests to Dana at hwpoa@aol.com no later than Monday, February 11.  Please only send street repair requests, not sidewalks or curbs.

NOTE: Street repaving is not part of this program.  Please do not submit requests to repave streets.

Will you know if someone is standing at your front door or accessing your front or side access gates now?
Although overall Part 1 crime is significantly down for the area, Residential Burglaries continue to trend throughout the area,  It is important to remain vigilant and not become complacent when it comes to securing and safeguarding our homes, automobiles and persons AT ALL TIMES!

Immediate Detection, Notification and Verification Technology is critical in determining when a crime is occurring and in progress at your home.  An alarm alone is no longer sufficient.  There must be a secondary immediate means of notification and verification to support whether or not the alarm is valid or false.

Additionally, residents should be notified and aware when there is physical activity at key entry points of the property.  These key locations are the front door, any side access points to the rear of the property, and any rear doors or accessible areas from the backyard.  Please take a few moments to review this news video:  https://ktla.com/2015/08/28/after-attempted-home-invasion-in-valley-village-lapd-looks-for-suspect-for-hours/

4.  STOP THE AGORA – HOW YOU CAN HELP

Dear supporters,

We are writing to share that the Daily Bruin’s Editorial Board has just delivered a resounding attack of the Agora proposal. In this editorial, the Board writes,

“Developers in the neighborhood have long taken advantage of students’ need to live near campus, and The Agora seems just another example.”

You must read this. It will make you Bruin proud. Here is the link:

The Agora is an overwhelming mirage with an underwhelming delivery

What can you do? Sign the petition and share it with others ASAP.

Can you take a lawn sign? Email us. We want all streets of Little Holmby to be included with lawn signs.

This event is open to the public. Admission and parking are FREE. Complimentary coffee and cookies are available from 12:45 pm.  The speaker at this event will be Adam Winkler, Professor of Law at UCLA and his topic is: “Citizens United and the Story Behind How Corporations Became People.” Mr. Winkler will discuss how that controversial Supreme Court decision was the capstone of a two-hundred-year struggle over corporate personhood.

The Plato Society of Los Angeles is a self-learning group that meets in Westwood Village, with a current membership of over 400, https://theplatosociety.org/.  The Plato Society offers 7 colloquium each year with excellent speakers on topics of interest.

“How to Look at Architecture” at the Skirball Cultural Center.  This is a series of four classes (Wednesdays, March 6, 13, 20 and 27, 1:30-3:00 pm) which will include short documentaries on architecture’s “basics,” on Frank Lloyd Wright and Organic Architecture, and on Bruno Zevi’s thinking.  They will also encompass seven short documentaries (for a total of 120 minutes) with visual observations on “what makes cities great?” recently filmed in Paris, Berlin, and Rome.

Expand your awareness about the spaces—streets, buildings, and open public spaces—of Paris, Berlin, and Rome. Each session begins with a new short film documentary produced by the instructor, followed by interactive class discussions about exploring architecture with a mission, conceiving open spaces for people, and rethinking the city.
