1.  TREE PLANTING EVENT IN HWPOA

The Holmby Westwood Green Team’s first parkway tree planting is scheduled for Saturday, January 26th from 9 AM to 12  Noon.  Trees will be planted on Manning Avenue between Hilgard and Malcolm and in the 700 block of Malcolm Avenue. Councilman Paul Koretz, whose office has been helpful to our effort, will  join us to inaugurate the planting. Tree People volunteers will plant the trees and we welcome neighbors’ help and good cheer.  Please let us know if you will join us by emailing Marnie (mossbodek@msn.com) or kathryn (khowe.kwh@gmail.com)

For safety, streets will be closed 8 am to 1pm:  Manning Avenue between Hilgard and LeConte; and Malcolm between Glenmont and Manning.

This should be a fun and exciting event for Holmby Westwood.  The Green Team plans to work with neighbors and Tree People to replant 300 of our missing parkway trees.  Please see the HWPOA website for information: https://www.holmbywestwoodpoa.org/?page_id=1301

2.  WOMEN’S MARCH – ENHANCED METRO SERVICES

This year’s Women’s March will take place on Saturday, Jan. 19, and turnout is expected to be pretty big. Metro Rail will run enhanced service on all lines from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. with longer trains on the Expo, Blue, Gold, Purple and Red Lines in anticipation of large crowds. Metro Rail will be running the following service:

  • Red Line trains will run every 6 minutes and Purple Line trains every 12 minutes.
  • Expo Line trains will run every 6 minutes.
  • Blue Line trains will run every 6 minutes between 7th Street/Metro Center and Willow Station.
  • Gold Line trains will run every 7 minutes between APU/Citrus College and Union Station, every 15 minutes between Little Tokyo/Arts District and Atlantic Station.
  • Green Line trains will run every 12 minutes.

The starting point for the march is outside the Red/Purple Lines’ Pershing Square Station.

If you were an attendee from previous years, you may recall the extremely long lines at TAP vending machines. You can bypass that by buying and loading your TAP card ahead of time.  Buy TAP cards and load fares online at taptogo.net

3.  LAUSD STRIKE – RESOURCES FOR PARENTS

Mayor Garcetti is committed to ensuring that parents have options for their kids until all of our students return to the classroom. The Mayor is working closely with City departments and Metro to make additional resources available to families that need assistance during the strike.

During the strike, the City will keep 32 recreation centers open for extended hours with additional staffing, lunch, and programming focused on elementary-aged children, such as arts and crafts and sports/fitness activities, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on regular school days. Parents planning to take their children to one of these sites must complete a registration form and submit it at the recreation center upon arrival. Free lunch for children will be provided at these centers.

Metro and L.A. City DASH and Commuter Express is offering free rides to L.A. Unified students with school ID from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Mayor Garcetti has encouraged City Departments to provide flexibility to affected employees, urging general managers to work closely with staff to better understand and accommodate workers’ child care needs. The Mayor’s Office has contacted some of L.A.’s largest private-sector employers to urge the preparation of similar plans.

Public libraries will offer additional staffing, learning resources — such as STEAM exercises and educational workshops — and programming focused on middle and high school-aged Angelenos.  Also, in or near our district please note that several museums have waived their admission fees during the strike.

  • La Brea Tar Pits – Free admission for all LA Unified students and LA Unified chaperones. On-site, grade-appropriate, self-guided activities and lesson plans for pick-up at both museums by chaperones upon arrival. (Monday – Friday)
  • Petersen Automotive Museum – Free admission for all middle or high school students with LA Unified ID. A sign-in sheet will be available for elementary school students with no ID. The Petersen’s Discovery Center will offer crafts daily during the event of a strike. A parent or guardian must be present with students age 13 and under. (Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.)
  • Museum of Tolerance – Free admission for all LA Unified middle and high school students. (Monday – Thursday and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Fridays, 10:00 a.m – 3:30 p.m.)

More information about resources and services can be found at LAMayor.org/StudentsAndFamilies and by dialing 311.

4.  SEPULVEDA TRANSIT CORRIDOR PROJECT MEETINGS

Metro is conducting a Feasibility Study to identify and evaluate a range of high-capacity rail transit alternatives between the San Fernando Valley and LAX, including connections to existing and planned Metro bus and rail lines, including the Orange, Purple, and Expo Lines.

Thanks to all who took the online survey to share thoughts about traveling the Sepulveda Corridor.  More than 6,000 people took the survey and provided valuable feedback to Metro’s project team.

The next round of community meetings will include an update on the study, including refined concepts for the San Fernando Valley-Westside connection and initial concepts for the Westside-LAX connection.

7.  METRO PURPLE LINE – CONTESTS FOR STUDENTS

The Purple Line Extension Transit Project is adding two more tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to its TBM family! The new additions will join Elsie and Soyeon, the TBMs digging Section 1 of the Purple Line Extension. The Section 2 TBMs will be responsible for the second leg of the tunneling journey, digging from Century City to Beverly Hills.

Metro is inviting Los Angeles County students from kindergarten through 12th grade to participate in an art and naming contest for the TBMs.

The contest is divided into two categories:

  • Art Contest – Students from Kindergarten through 5th grade will compete to illustrate their ideal community that includes the Purple Line Extension.
  • Naming Contest – Students from 6th through 12th grade will compete to choose two names, one for each of the TBMs.

Submissions for the TBM Art and Naming contest will be accepted from January 14 through March 15, 2019.  The winning TBM artwork and names will be displayed on the side of the huge TBM machines during the unveiling ceremony, which is anticipated to happen Summer 2019. At that time Metro will recognize the students and award prizes to the winners.

Visit metro.net/purple for detailed contest rules and submission information.
