1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

The Los Angeles Police Department recommends the following tips to help secure your home and harden the target.

· ALARMS: Ensure that security alarms are in good working order and set when not at home whether leaving for 10 minutes or 10 hours.
· ALARM RESPONSE: Consider a private patrol alarm response to enhance your current alarm and security system. In many cases private patrols are already contracted in many neighborhoods or associations.
· SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS: Web based surveillance camera systems will allow homeowners to view and monitor activity from any smartphone or computer which are motion sensor activated and will alert your device when there is activity. They also lend valuable information and clues to the investigation.
· MOTION SENSOR LIGHTING: Install motion sensor lighting around your home to illuminate normally dark areas around the home. This will also alert residents to outside activity around the home when motion lights are activated.
· GATES: Ensure that all gates and access points to the side or rear of the residence are locked and secured.
· DOOR AND WINDOW LOCKS: Ensure that all doors and windows are locked and secured with sturdy secured locks and that there are second locking mechanisms securing all doors and windows as a second line of defense.
· MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU’RE HOME…Even when you’re not.
· NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: Monitor suspicious activities in your neighborhood and alert your neighbors. Should the activity escalate to a crime about to occur, crime in progress or crime that just occurred, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!
· SECURITY PATROLS: Consider after hours on site security at construction sites or major remodel projects. Many neighborhoods contract with private security patrols which monitor neighborhoods and can quickly respond to burglar alarm activations or reports of suspicious activity when they occur.

Burglary:
900 block of Westholme Ave (RD 0828): On 06/16/15, between 1:30pm-5:00pm, unknown suspect(s) cut the screen located on the side of the secured front door. No entry was gained or property taken.

2.  PLANT THEFT

A resident on the 300 block of Conway planted some drought tolerant plants in their front yard.  They reported that two nights in a row last week, thieves made off with the plants with surgical precision.  Please be mindful of any suspicious activities and take appropriate measures.

3.  LAX TRAFFIC SURVEY

The City of Los Angeles is in the planning stages of building a connection between LAX and our transportation system, including transporting passengers to a new facility where you can rent a car, catch a bus or hop on a Metro train.  The facility will make it easier for people to get to and from LAX and will get cars off the road.

Please visit http://beatlaxtraffic.com/ and take a few moments to play the new interactive survey game to let them know how you get to and from LAX and about your dream scenario for traveling to the airport.

For more information about the project, please visit http://connectinglax.com/index.html

3.  AUTO KEY FOBS – WARNING

From the LAPD:

Auto key fobs—those neat little devices that are becoming the standard for vehicle door locks allow drivers to walk up to their car and have it automatically unlock just by being in its proximity. Very cool– the problem is, that thieves have discovered that they can use power amplifiers which increase the range for which the car searches for its compatible fob.

So in a nutshell, you can be in your home, with your fob on your bureau, and the bad guy can use a power amplifier to increase the radius of the search (to within your residence) and when it recognizes it, it unlocks the car for the thief. No broken windows, no suspicious noises, nothing unusual going on that would make someone suspect a car is being broken into or stolen. The suspect simply walks up to your car and the lock unlocks.

It’s been suggested that the best way to prevent this from happening is to conceal your vehicle’s fob within a metal container of some sort which would block the power amplifier from connecting with it. The refrigerator or freezer seems to do the trick. Just something to keep in mind.

CREEPING THYME GROUND COVER

Following up on the topic of drought-tolerant plants. The BIG thirsty part of our gardens is the lawn.

Would want to know if any member has found a suitable ground cover to replace the lawn. I was told that “creeping thyme” would do the job, and it’s good for sun and shade. Anyone has experience with it, or any other?  rozengurt@hotmail.com

2.  DROUGHT-TOLERANT PLANTS

From a neighbor:

I noticed that UCLA is re-landscaping the area near the Law School and Murphy Hall with lots of really terrific-looking drought-tolerant plants. These campus plants would also grow well in our gardens, so I asked for the plant list, which UCLA’s Office of Sustainability was happy to provide — along with the information that the campus has pledged to replace 73,000 square feet of ornamental turf as part of its response to the Mayor’s call for a sustainable Los Angeles.

The plants currently being installed near the Law School include Lantana Montevidensis; Leymus “Canyon Prince”; Dietes Butcheriana; Dietes Grandiflora; Westringia “Blue Gem”; Lomandra “Katies Bells”; Callist “Lil Better”; Olea Europea “Little Ollie”. The campus has other interesting drought-tolerant plantings, including sedges and meadow grasses at Stein Plaza and meadow grasses opposite Parking Structure 2.

3.  USPS PROBLEMS – UPDATE

Dear Westwood residents with USPS concerns,

Congressman Ted Lieu takes your USPS concerns very seriously. On his behalf I had a very productive meeting today with USPS authorities. I conveyed your compliments and your complaints.

USPS in your area has been given permission to hire additional workers. It will take a little time to find the right people and train them, and get them to be as good as some of our favorite long time carriers.

Also they have several new systems in the works that should help delivery. Again, these are just going into place and it will take a little time for them to be up and running smoothly.

They are also making an effort to address the stolen mail problem and problems with customer service at the post offices themselves.

Their communications director is going to write a release about some of these changes so that this information is conveyed to you accurately.

Although I will be out of town on vacation from April 18 until May 4th I will occasionally check my e mail and will forward this to you when it comes in.

I also wanted you to know that it was agreed that I would have regular meetings with USPS every 4 to 6 weeks.

So I’ll need you to keep a watchful eye. I will check in with you in a month to see if the situation has improved or gotten worse.

Best,
Janet
