1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

BURGLARY (entry of structure w/intent to commit theft or a felony)
Incident #: 180814891
700 BLOCK GLENMONT AV  |  8/16/2018 @ 9:00 AM

BURGLARY – ATTEMPTED
Incident #: 180814994
10400 BLOCK CHARING CROSS RD  |  8/21/2018 @ 9:50 AM

One of the unfortunate constants continuing to occur throughout the city are the numerous thefts arising from unattended property at local coffee shops and restaurants. Feeling safe, secure and at ease in our fair community tends to contribute to a sense of complacency about one’s property while we are out and about– our computers left on tables during a quick trip to the bathroom, cell phones and wallets left behind while we get a quick refill at the counter, or purses and wallets lifted out of supermarket shopping carts or from the backs of chairs at restaurants. It’s always easy pickins’ for the bad guys.

In a recent incident, a coffee house patron observed a person remove his cell phone from his table and walk quickly away with it out the door and down the street. He announced loudly ‘Hey, that guy just took my cell phone!’ and started to pursue him along with a good Samaritan. Twice however, as the victim confronted the suspect about taking his cell phone, the suspect turned on him and swept a large knife at the victim. The victim, in fear, kept his distance but continued to follow the suspect and directed responding officers to the suspect. The suspect had tossed both the knife and the stolen cell phone into the landscape but both were recovered and the suspect was arrested for robbery.

While this incident has a happy ending, it’s better to avoid this type of confrontation in the first place. People that steal things are not always in their right minds. As officers, we’ve seen lives lost over such insignificant property such as loose change or recycled cans. Property is not worth risking your life over. But I do get it – it’s such a shock and affront to our senses. I would only suggest to everyone that you always keep your property secure and within sight and to also give some thought as to how you would handle a similar situation-in advance. Talk to your kids about how they would handle themselves if someone stole their phone or computer.  There is no property worth getting hurt or losing one’s life over.

2.  STREET REPAIR UPDATE

Earlier this week, the Bureau of Street Services repaired potholes at the following locations:

  • 1054 Selby Ave
  • Beverly Glen Blvd & Comstock Ave
  • Wyton Dr & Comstock Ave
  • Charing Cross Rd & Loring Ave
  • Charing Cross Rd & Mapleton Dr
  • Westholme Ave & Le Conte Ave

Another location (a drain at Westholme & Lindbrook) has been referred to Sanitation for repair.

If you requested a street repair that was not fixed this week, you are encouraged to enter a repair request on the City of LA 311 website – https://myla311.lacity.org/

3.  RIGHT TURN ONLY – MALCOLM & WILSHIRE

Due to concerns with traffic safety, the city has approved a “Right Turn Only” restriction for northbound and southbound traffic on Malcolm Avenue at Wilshire Boulevard.  The current stop sign allows for drivers to turn left onto Wilshire or cross over Wilshire, both of which can result in traffic collisions as cars venture onto the busy street.

In order to promote the safe and orderly movement of traffic at this location, the “Right Turn Only” restriction has been authorized.  We do not yet know when signs will be posted but we will keep you updated as we find out more information.

1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

THEFT-GRAND (plain theft-grand) $950.01 & over
Incident #: 180814531
900 BLOCK HILGARD AV  |  8/10/2018 @ 11:50 PM

CRIME FOLLOW-UP
Last week, we reported an incident of rape near Comstock and Hilgard.  We followed up with the LAPD and received the following information:
This incident was an acquaintance rape meaning the victim and suspect were known to each other.  The suspect was arrested during the initial investigation and is in custody.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY ALERT
There has been a recent increasing trend of Residential Burglaries developing in several Westside communities to include Brentwood, Westwood, Bel Air, Benedict Canyon, and the Beverly Crest communities.

The suspects will target a specific home and typically will knock or ring the doorbell to verify if anyone is home. When there is no answer, the suspects enter the side or rear yard or access area of the residence and force entry, usually by smashing a window or door glass to gain entry. Suspects are targeting the master bed and bath as well as other rooms of the home and removing Jewelry, cash, small valuables and small electronics.

Immediate Detection and Notification is key to prevention and apprehension. The Los Angeles Police Department recommends the following tips to help secure your home and harden the target:

  • SURVEILLANCE/SECURITY CAMERAS: Web based surveillance and doorbell camera systems will alert and allow homeowners to immediately view and monitor activity from any smartphone or computer which are motion sensor activated and will alert your device when there is activity. They will also lend valuable information and clues to the investigation.
  • ALARMS: Ensure that security alarms are in good working order and set when not at home whether leaving for 10 minutes or 10 hours. Accessible upstairs doors & windows should have alarm sensors and upstairs rooms should have motion sensors to include the master bedroom.
  • ALARM RESPONSE: Consider a private patrol alarm response to enhance your current alarm and security system. In many cases private patrols are already contracted in many neighborhoods or associations.
  • MOTION SENSOR LIGHTING: Install motion sensor lighting around your home to illuminate normally dark areas around the home. This will also alert residents to outside activity around the home when motion lights are activated.
  • GATES: Ensure that all gates and access points to the side or rear of the residence are locked and secured.
  • DOOR AND WINDOW LOCKS: Ensure that all doors and windows are locked and secured with sturdy secured locks and that there are second locking mechanisms securing all doors and windows as a second line of defense.
  • MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU’RE HOME…Even when you’re not.
  • NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: Monitor suspicious activities in your neighborhood and alert your neighbors. Should the activity escalate to a crime about to occur, crime in progress or crime that just occurred, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!
  • SECURITY PATROLS: Consider after hours on site security at construction sites or major remodel projects. Many neighborhoods contract with private security patrols which monitor neighborhoods and can quickly respond to burglar alarm activations or reports of suspicious activity when they occur.

2.  ATTEMPTED BURGLARY ON MALCOLM

A resident reported the following:

We were the attempted burglary on Malcolm on August 6.  It was in broad daylight, in the middle of the day and my son and I had just got home from Ralphs and were in the kitchen unpacking the bags. However I had Amazon boxes outside my front door and because I had just come home I had not checked the front door yet, so the suspect thought that we were not home. I heard a noise like breaking glass and when I walked into my hallway I saw shards of glass falling onto my living room floor and realized someone was breaking the window on our French doors. He had a box cutter or a knife and I told my son to call 911, I started screaming and went to the door and opened my peep hole and I saw his face and he looked visibly shocked that someone was home and he then ran away as fast as he could.

911 responded very quickly however he was gone by the time they got there and they believe he had an accomplice with a getaway car. The police told me that this kind of brazen crime is happening all over Los Angeles and that the suspects don’t care if the alarm goes off because they know they can get in and out and steal as much as they can before the police or the security company arrives. They said because the boxes were outside my front door that he thought it would be an easy mark and that nobody was home.

Please make sure you always bring your boxes inside, and make that be the first thing you check when you get home. The police told me to always check my surroundings and don’t be afraid to scream if something doesn’t seem right. Please stay safe and please watch out for your neighbors – even though I was screaming in broad daylight on Malcolm which is one of the busiest streets in our neighborhood, nobody came over to see if I was ok.

1.  BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY

This Tuesday, August 14th is the first day of school for LAUSD.  Please be careful when driving around the neighborhood at drop-off and pick-up times, and if you are a parent of a student, please observe all safety regulations when dropping off or picking up your children.  Let’s keep the neighborhood safe!

2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

BURGLARY – ATTEMPTED
Incident #: 180814309
800 BLOCK MALCOLM AV  |  8/6/2018 @ 1:35 PM

RAPE, FORCIBLE (any age, non consentual sexual intercourse)
Incident #: 180800659
COMSTOCK AV & HILGARD AV  |  8/7/2018 @ 11:20 AM
Note: We have contacted LAPD for additional information regarding this incident and we will let you know when we receive their report.

3.  CAR AND MAILBOX BREAK-INS

A neighbor on the 300 block of Comstock reported that her car was broken into overnight earlier this week.  A few personal items were taken.  The car was parked in the driveway but was not locked.   The neighbor reported a similar incident 3 years ago, when her car was not locked and broken in to overnight.

Another homeowner on the same block of Comstock reported that someone tried to break in to his mailbox overnight.

It’s possible (likely) that suspects are casing the neighborhood  overnight and checking for unlocked cars and mail left in mailboxes.  Please LOCK YOUR CARS and make sure your mail and mailbox are secure.

In addition, please do not put sensitive documents in the blue recycling bin, unless they have been shredded.  There are people who rummage through garbage bins on Tuesday nights and Wednesday mornings.

4.  PLEASE WATER YOUR TREES

In this heat, some trees are suffering. If you’re able, please remember to water parkway trees several times a week (particularly during heatwaves) to keep them healthy.  Trees provide an urban canopy that not only beautifies neighborhoods and potentially decreases heating/cooling costs, but also provides shade and helps improve our air quality.

For those who are concerned about drought restrictions, those were lifted in April 2017.  Here’s an NPR article with more information.

5.  FOOD TRUCKS AT HOLMBY PARK

After many complaints to the council office regarding food trucks around Holmby Park, Councilmember Koretz proposed a motion to prohibit parking of vehicles “in excess of 22 feet in length or over 84 inches in height during the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m” on all streets surrounding the park, park side only.

His motion will be heard in the Transportation Committee before heading to city council for final approval.

BURGLARY (entry of structure w/intent to commit theft or a felony)
Incident #: 180813985
400 BLOCK DALEHURST AV  |  7/30/2018 @ 1:00 PM

KNOCK-KNOCK BURGLARIES: SUSPECTS ARRESTED
Several weeks ago, we reported a burglary on Devon, where the suspects, driving a silver Infiniti, had also burglarized a home south of Wilshire.  Yesterday, we received the following report from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept., regarding suspects driving a silver Infiniti that were recently arrested:

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s, Major Crimes Bureau, Burglary-Robbery Task Force (BRTF) believe there are additional victims in recent Los Angeles and Orange County residential “Knock-Knock” type burglaries. They have arrested four suspects and want you to contact them, or your local law enforcement agency, if you believe these suspects burglarized your home.

For the complete LASD report, please click here:

2.  HOME SECURITY REMINDERS

Please take whatever measures you can afford to better secure your properties:

  • Ensure video cameras are up and running and are visible – to further serve as a deterrent.
  • Be nosy… if you hear glass breaking, pay attention, call it in. Side gates should be locked.
  • Lights should illuminate your home like an airport.
  • Leave something audible, like a stereo or TV loud enough to be heard from the front and the rear to give the impression that someone is home each and every time you leave your home.
  • Talk to your family and your staff about how to deal with strangers and solicitors ringing your doorbell…Without answering the door, they should speak loudly and in the plural “We can’t come to the door right now”.

And if you do find yourself face to face with someone in your home, remember that there is nothing, no amount of property, cash or jewelry, that is worth you or your family’s safety.

3.  PARKING PERMIT SOLICITATION BY UCLA STUDENTS

We received the following information from the Westwood Hills POA (the neighborhood on the west side of UCLA).  If you have been approached by UCLA students with a similar request, please let us know by contacting HWPOA@aol.com.  Thank you.

A neighbor on Cashmere Street north of Montana reported being approached yesterday by two UCLA students who came to her door saying that they had created an app for residents in Westwood Hills to sell parking permits to UCLA students.

It is against the law to sell your parking permits to anyone, students or others, who are unaffiliated with your household! If you do so, then you would be deemed at fault and subject to punishment.

If you have been approached by UCLA students about this parking permit app, please let us know right away.

In particular, the city would appreciate receiving any specific information garnered about the students who are soliciting people in the neighborhood, such as their name or contact info, and a copy of whatever written info or form they might present to you.  We will pass it on to Councilman Koretz’s office, and his staff will contact the students and discourage them from pursuing this illegal operation.

6.  PROPOSED BAN ON ELECTRIC SCOOTERS

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

A Los Angeles city councilman introduced a motion Tuesday to ban the operation of electric scooters until the city drafts full regulations on their use.

The move by Councilman Paul Koretz comes as the City Council is in the process of drafting regulations for the new industry and a week after a six- month ban on motorized scooters went into force in Beverly Hills following a vote by the City Council.

Koretz had previously expressed support for exploring the use of electric scooters in the city, but he told City News Service that was before he got full exposure to them.

7.  L.A. HOMELESS OUTREACH PROGRAM

Did you see someone experiencing homelessness who needs help? Notice a homeless neighbor who seems to be struggling with their physical and/or mental health? You can help them by filling out an outreach request at www.la-hop.org or by dialing 2-1-1 and reporting any specific concerns you may have regarding the person’s well-being.

LA-HOP (Homeless Outreach Program) is a service designed to assist people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County with outreach services. Calling LA-HOP will dispatch a homeless services outreach team to the area. Homeless individuals or others may call the line when seeking help for themselves or others. This program is funded by Measure H, the County of Los Angeles special sales tax increase passed by the voters in 2017 that specifically funds services, shelter, and permanent rental subsidies for people experiencing homelessness.

211 LA is the central source for providing information and referrals for all health, human services and social services in LA County. The 2-1-1 phone line is open 24 hours, 7 days a week, with trained Community Resource Advisors prepared to offer help with any situation, any time. If you are calling from outside Los Angeles County or cannot directly dial 2-1-1, call (800) 339-6993.

8.  PUBLIC SURVEY – URBAN FOREST MANAGEMENT

The City of Los Angeles is in the initial stages of developing an Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) funded by a grant from CAL FIRE. Urban Tree Canopy cover in the City of Los Angeles is only 21%, lower than the national average of 26%, making the health and sustainability of the City’s park trees critical. The goal of the UFMP is to help guide the planting, care, protection, and sustainability of the City’s urban trees. The initiative represents a city-wide collaborative effort to better understand current urban forestry management needs.

In order to ensure that the plan considers and incorporates resident priorities, the following survey is provided for your voice to be heard. We want to know where focus should be placed as the UFMP is developed. This survey will be collecting responses through August 10, 2018.  We appreciate you taking part in this important process.

1.  STREET REPAIR REQUESTS

The Bureau of Street Services has scheduled a Small Asphalt Repairs (SAR) truck (which is described as 1 small asphalt repair truck, consisting of 2 workers and asphalt), for the Westwood Neighborhood Council area, to perform small asphalt repairs on August 21, 2018.

The type of repairs that can be addressed with this program include the following:
– Potholes and pop outs
– Skin patching of eroded or cracked areas
– Some repairs on concrete streets

The Westwood Neighborhood Council has asked us to submit suggested locations in our neighborhood for small street repairs. The city will only send the SAR truck to a total of 15 locations in the entire Westwood Neighborhood Council area, so Holmby Westwood will only see a handful of repairs.

If you are aware of any spots in our neighborhood that would be particularly good candidates for this program, please send requests to Dana at hwpoa@aol.com no later than Monday, July 30.  Please only send street repair requests, not sidewalks or curbs.

NOTE: Street repaving is not part of this program.  Please do not submit requests to repave streets.

2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

VEHICLE, STOLEN
Incident #: 180813725
WEYBURN & SELBY  |  7/25/2018 @ 12:01 AM

SAFETY TIPS – CAR THEFT/BURGLARY PREVENTION
As the West Los Angeles Area continues to be a target rich environment, an important community prevention piece is to ensure that residents “Lock It Hide It Keep It”! All valuables should be removed from vehicles with nothing visible inside, leaving vehicles locked and secured. It is also equally important that ALL access points to the property are locked as well as securing all gates, doors and windows along with early detection and notification technology.

Below are tips that residents can use to avoid being the victim of an auto related crime:

  • Never leave your car running unattended, even to dash into your residence, a business, store, etc.
  • Never leave any keys in the car, inside a locked garage, or in hide-a-key boxes.
  • Always roll up your windows and lock the car, even if it is parked in front of your home or in the driveway.
  • Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked. Put them in the trunk, out of sight, or remove them from the vehicle.
  • Always park in high-traffic, well-lighted areas, when possible.
  • Install a mechanical device that locks the steering wheel, column, or brakes. These devices will deter some criminals.
  • Investigate the purchase of a vehicle theft tracking/security system, especially if you own one of the frequently stolen model vehicles.
  • Never leave personal identification documents, vehicle ownership title, or credit cards in your vehicle.
  • Copy your license plate and vehicle information (VIN) numbers and keep them with you. If your vehicle is stolen, the police will need this information to take a report.
  • If your vehicle is stolen, report it to the police immediately.

Remember, there is no guarantee that your car will not be targeted or stolen, but taking the precautionary measures can minimize your chances of becoming the victim of auto related crime.

3.  COMMUNITY POLICE ACADEMY

The Los Angeles Police Department invites you to attend our
Community Police Academy

Beginning August 1, 2018, LAPD Operations-West Bureau will conduct a Community Police Academy for adults. The eleven week course session will be hosted by Pacific Area.

This eleven-week course will be held at the Ahmanson Recruit Training Center, 5651 W. Manchester Ave, Los Angeles, California 90045. The class will meet each Wednesday evening between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm. The course will conclude with a graduation ceremony on October 10, 2018.

The Community Police Academy offers an exposure and orientation to a variety of policing concepts and operations within the Los Angeles Police Department. However, unlike prior Community Police Academy sessions, successful completion of this session will provide community members with the minimum training needed to participate in the Volunteer Citizen Patrol Program. Those who choose to take their police engagement to a new level, will have the opportunity to wear a volunteer uniform and actively participate in crime reduction in their neighborhoods with police officers. Participation in this Volunteer Citizen Patrol Program is voluntary and not required for attendance.

Through the Community Police Academy, enrolled students will be encouraged to build a lasting partnership with the Department, with the goal of developing a relationship between the Los Angeles Police Department and community members we serve.

Each community member must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be 18 years or older;
  • Live or work in Operations-West Bureau;
  • No prior felony convictions;
  • No outstanding warrants;
  • No pending criminal cases; and
  • Must be approved by an Area Commanding Officer.

Interested community members should contact the West Los Angeles Community Relations Officer in Charge, Sergeant II Justin Scott at 33586@lapd.online or 310-444-0743.

4.  LA SANITATION – “DON’T FLUSH THAT” CAMPAIGN

Our sewer system carries wastewater to one of four plants, where it is highly treated and discharged into the river or ocean. Flushing anything but human waste and toilet paper can cause blockages, back ups, and sewer line breaks. When this happens, untreated sewage can enter the storm drain system and impact our beaches.

You can help protect our waterways, beaches, and the environment. Please don’t litter, and never use your toilet as a trash can.  Unused medicine and sharps such as needles and lancets can be dropped off at SAFE Centers across the city. www.lacitysan.org/safecenters

Thank you for helping us keep our beaches and river clean!

2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

VEHICLE, STOLEN
Incident #: 180813172
800 BLOCK WARNER AV  |  7/13/2018 @ 1:00 PM

Robbery on Devon (between Strathmore & Lindbrook)
At about 2:30 PM on Thursday, July 19, two masked men and a woman driving a silver Infiniti burglarized a home by entering the locked rear door.  The suspects escaped within a short time down Devon towards Wilshire.  Suspects driving the same car burglarized a home south of Wilshire on Warnall at about the same time of day, two days earlier.  They escaped with a safe on Warnall.

If you see a silver Infiniti with potential suspects, please call the LAPD:

EMERGENCY: 911
LAPD NON-EMERGENCY: 1-877-275-5273

We will forward additional information as it becomes available.

LAPD ADVICE – WHEN HELICOPTERS ARE CIRCLING:
LAPD has responded with “Air Support” recently to a few active burglary reports and/or traffic stops in the area. LAPD has advised that YOU can help yourself and the police by turning on all exterior lights AND by locking doors and windows until the situation has cleared. Some of our members have had their electrician install powerful LED flood lights in their backyard to light up the night when they hear or see something. Please understand that while a police helicopter hovering over your house at night can be disturbing, this is the BEST way to coordinate ground response teams to keep you safe!

3.  PARKWAY TREE UPDATE

Our parkway streets provide shade, aesthetic and environmental benefits, and significantly enhance the economic value of individual properties and the neighborhood.    The reverse is also true—houses without parkway trees are diminished in value and contribute to neighborhood decline.

Following up on the Holmby Westwood Parkway Tree Inventory presented by the UCLA Project Team at the HWPOA Annual Meeting, homeowners Marnie Bodek and Kathryn Welch Howe convened interested neighbors to discuss next steps.

At their meeting, the neighbors decided to form a Green Team, to increase neighborhood appreciation of our unique tree canopy and to build awareness of proper tree care and maintenance.  The Green Team also decided to partner with Tree People, the national non-profit environmental organization located in Coldwater Canyon,  to identify appropriate replacements for missing parkway trees, and with owners’ consent and participation, to plant trees on our “Dream Streets”—streets that have the highest number of missing trees.

For more information, please visit our website at:

Feel free to contact Marnie (mossbodek@msn.com) and Kathryn (khowe.kwh@gmail.com) for more information about Holmby Westwood street trees and how you can become involved.

2.  CAR BREAK-IN SECURITY ALERT

From SSA Security:

SUBJECT: BURGLARY/THEFT FROM MOTOR VEHICLE
LOCATION:       800 BLOCK MALCOLM
DATE & TIME:   07-08-18; 3:38AM (ROUGH)

An SSA subscriber reported to SSA that on the above listed date and time, a male subjects, with a dark beard, dark knit cap, wearing a t-shirt and levis entered the driveway of the client.  The suspect was captured on the client’s Ring camera in front of their home entering the client’s locked vehicle.  It appears from the video he searched the glove compartment but took no property.

The suspect is then seen walking out of the driveway into a waiting car, a possible SUV, dark in color.  It is possible, there was a 2nd person in the car, driving.

SSA has attached stills from the Ring Video to show how cavalier the subject was and how quickly he maneuvered in and out of the vehicle.

The victim in this instance appears to have done everything right, locking the car, leaving nothing of value in the car.  It is a known fact, breaking into cars is the single most prevalent crime in the nation and in Los Angeles.

Here are some tips to possibly prevent a suspect breaking into your car in the future:

  1. Hide, Lock and take out of sight (items in your car)
  2. Thieves looks for items of value in plain sight
  3. Thieves specifically look for briefcases, laptops, tablets, cell phones, wallets, jewelry, etc
  4. Thieves initially check to see if the car is unlocked , if not and the items seen are of value, they WILL break in
  5. Park behind locked gates or in the garage a if possible
  6. If not possible to park behind gates/garages, park in the driveway and have sufficient lighting trained on  the car-ensure it is locked and nothing left inside
  7. Never leave credit cards, checkbooks or large sums of money in your car
  8. ENSURE TO SET THE ALARM ON THE CAR AND LOCK THE DOORS SO THAT IF OPENED, THE ALARM WILL SOUND
  9. Record all serial numbers of valuable property and ensure it is not left in the car

The client has notified LAPD.

4.  CAR KEY FOBS – SECURITY ADVICE

From USA Today:

Why you might want to wrap your car key fob in foil

Given that the best way to store your car keys at night is by putting them in a coffee can, what’s an ex-FBI agent’s advice to protect cars from theft during the day?

Wrap car fobs in aluminum foil.

“Although it’s not ideal, it is the most inexpensive way,” said Holly Hubert, a cybersecurity expert who retired in 2017 from the FBI in Buffalo, New York. “The cyber threat is so dynamic and ever changing, it’s hard for consumers to keep up.”

7.  BECOME A MEDIATOR

The Los Angeles City Attorney Dispute Resolution Program is are pleased to announce the dates for our upcoming *Summer 2018 Basic Mediation Training*.

– *July 30 – August 1, 9AM-5PM*

Basic Mediation Training – Comprehensive mediation training and practical role play exercises in accordance with the CA Dispute Resolution Act (DRPA). (Location: South Los Angeles)

– *August 9 – 10, 9AM-5PM (Optional)*

Mediation is a valuable and powerful skill that can benefit all aspects of one’s life.  The Dispute Resolution Program offers mediation services free of charge to residents of Los Angeles County. Mediation is a method of alternative dispute resolution available to assist parties in resolving differences. Through this process, a volunteer mediator serves as a neutral third party to facilitate communication and assist parties in reaching a mutually accepted agreement. Mediation is confidential, participation is completely voluntary, and disputes are typically resolved in far less time than in the traditional justice system.

The Los Angeles City Attorney Dispute Resolution Program provides an opportunity for volunteer mediators to become “peacemakers” helping community members throughout Los Angeles build understanding and resolve conflicts.

The ideal candidate for this training is interested in helping people and their community, has availability to volunteer as a mediator for a minimum of 4 hours a week in our office in Los Angeles City Hall, has a valid CA driver’s license and clears a background check. Bilingual preferred, but not required.

2.  BEAT THE HEAT

The next few days will be extremely hot outside. Our friends at the City’s Emergency Management Department have put together some helpful tips to beat the heat.

Summer months bring fun, sun, and heat! Sometimes, the heat can become dangerous, especially for children, pets, people who work outside, and people with certain health conditions. Staying safe in high heat is important. Follow these simple tips to stay cool:

  • Drink plenty of cool water! Stay hydrated.
  • Wear loose, light-colored clothing that will keep you cool. Wear sunscreen and a hat for protection.
  • Check on neighbors who might be vulnerable to the heat, especially those without air conditioning.
  • Never leave children or pets in a car – not even for one minute. Temperatures inside a car can quicky skyrocket to deadly levels.
  • If you work or play outside, take frequent breaks to hydrate and cool off in the shade.
  • Don’t forget the pets! Keep pets indoors if possible. If kept outside, give them plenty of water and shade to rest in.
  • Symptoms of heat-related illness include dizziness, fatigue, faintness, headaches, muscle cramps, and increased thirst. If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention.

For more information regarding cooling centers and heat-related illnesses please click here:

3.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

THEFT FROM VEHICLE – PETTY ($950 & under)
Incident #: 180812666
MALCOLM & WILSHIRE  |  7/3/2018 @ 12:00 PM

WARM WEATHER “OPPORTUNISTS”
With warmer temperatures, we are tempted to open more windows and doors, and to spend more time away from home. In addition to summer vacations, your brief outings to the corner store or to walk your dog could be just the amount of time needed for an opportunist to find easy access into your home. FBI statistics reveal that there is a 10% increase in home burglaries during June, July and August. Here are five simple ways to lessen the chance of a home invasion making you the unlucky one:

  • Close your home’s windows, especially ones on the ground floor, or any second floor window with easy access. If you leave doors open, be sure your security screens are locked. Never leave a sliding patio door partially open overnight.
  • Every time you leave home, even for a short walk, close windows and doors and lock up!
  • Keep your garage door closed. Even when working near the garage (yard work or lawn mowing) be aware that when you step away, even for a short time (bathroom break or a drink of water), you are leaving your home and belongings exposed.
  • Close your car windows completely, lock the doors, and keep your keys with you at all times. “Cracked open” windows leave an opportunity to jimmy the locks. A car left running for air conditioning, and unattended, will likely net denial of an insurance claim. And by the way, DO NOT EVER leave children or animals in a closed car, running or not.
  • Take all the precautions to secure your home before leaving on vacation. Having a friend or relative house sit might seem like a luxury, but it could make all the difference in providing that lived-in look that deters criminals.

4.  LAWN BOWLING OPEN HOUSE

Neighborhood residents are invited to try lawn bowling at the Open House on Saturday, July 7 at 9:30 am at Holmby Park .  We provide free snacks, drinks, all equipment and basic instructions. RSVP to Philip M. Fox at 310.273.7776, or Tom Seres at tomseres@att.net.

5.  SCAMMERS POSING AS LADWP EMPLOYEES

The Los Angeles Department of Water & Power is warning the public that there are various types of scams in which people posing as LADWP employees are contacting customers and attempting to sell energy or water related products, or demanding payment for non-existent water and power bills. The scammers may use strong sales tactics or even threaten to shut off services. What can make the scheme even harder to detect is the increasing use of sophisticated communication technology that mimics phone numbers, making the caller ID appear to be from a trusted source. Here are some tips that might help you determine whether the call is legitimate or a scam.

Know that LADWP will NEVER:

  • Allow you to provide your credit card to a live LADWP operator to make payment;
  • Accept pre-paid cash cards (e.g. Green Dot) as tender for payment; or,
  • Call customers threatening to immediately disconnect their water or power service unless the customer makes a prompt payment over the phone.

What can you do if you get a suspicious call from someone claiming to be from LADWP?

  • NEVER give out any personal information including credit card or banking information to the caller; and
  • Hang up and dial 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397) directly.

7.  INPUT NEEDED  – VOTE CENTERS

Modernizing the voting experience is stemmed directly from the California Voter’s Choice Act, which some Counties in California are already implementing. View our California Voter’s Choice Act fact sheet for more info: http://vsap.lavote.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/CVCA_Flyer_2020.pdf

6.  DOCKLESS SCOOTER UPDATE

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

Dockless electric scooters would be allowed to operate in any part of the city under new guidelines approved by a City Council committee Wednesday, although the number of devices on the streets would be controlled and reviewed on a quarterly basis.

The Transportation Committee in May rejected a set of rules that had been proposed by the city’s Department of Transportation, deeming them too restrictive while asking for a new set of guidelines for a potential pilot program.

After being presented with the new standards, the committee approved them, with Councilman Mike Bonin stressing that “these regulations are not going to be final and permanent for all time. This is how Los Angeles is going to start governing dockless. We are a big city, we are a diverse city. We are not Santa Monica, we have lots of different neighborhoods and needs and a lot of different interests to consider.”

9.  JULY 4th DOG AND PET SAFETY

Fireworks, picnics and other Fourth of July traditions can be great fun for people; but all of the festivities can be frightening and even dangerous for animals. Noisy fireworks and other celebrations can startle animals and cause them to run away; holiday foods can be unhealthy; summer heat and travel can be dangerous; and potentially dangerous debris can end up lying on the ground where pets can eat or play with it.

Whether or not you’re planning your own Independence Day celebration, it’s important to take precautions to keep your pets safe both during and after the July 4th festivities.
