2.  SEEKING NEW HWPOA BOARD MEMBERS

Join the Board of Directors of
Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association

The HWPOA Board is seeking Holmby Westwood residents to volunteer to serve as a Director for 1 year. We usually meet on the second Tuesday of every month except for August and December. We ask only that you be a financially current member of the Association for the past 2 years and have an interest in maintaining and improving the quality of life we have all come to know and enjoy.

You will work with many neighbors who serve on the Board, some who have served for many years. This is a way to help your community, to work with city officials and departments, to plan events, and to support the protections in place today.

The Holmby Westwood community is over 80 years old and preservation, livability, and schools are key to its residential value. Serving on our Board of Directors is a way to safeguard one of the largest investments you will make in your lifetime.

We want the next generation to be able to carry on what we have fought to protect for these many years. Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association is a highly respected association throughout the city and, with your involvement, we hope that will continue indefinitely.

Our meetings are held at Belmont Village, Wilshire at Warner Ave., at 7:30 PM. Our committees include: Security, Parkway Tree Green Team, Traffic, Holmby Park, Architectural Supervising Committee, 4th of July event, Filming (in the neighborhood), WLAPD liaison and more.

You will have an extremely worthwhile experience while giving back to a community that has remained highly desirable for many years. That did not happen accidentally. It happened with a commitment from hundreds of our neighbors over 80 years!

Please, contact Dana Glenn, our Office Manager, and let her know that you want to join our Board. Send an email to hwpoa@aol.com or call (310) 470-1785 to contact Dana. The deadline for submissions is April 8. We look forward to hearing from you!!

Many thanks,
Your HWPOA Board of Directors

4.  LAPD ALERT – CAR KEY FOBS

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE FOBS OR KEYS IN YOUR CARS!!!

The West Los Angeles Area Auto Detectives advise that at present, the average for vehicles stolen from the West Los Angeles Area, and ultimately recovered, which have the fobs or keys left within the vehicle is well over 40%. Nearly HALF!!! In fact, a few weeks ago, we experienced a trend wherein 100% of the cars stolen in a one week period from the West LA Area involved victims who left their fobs or keys within their cars.

Some of victims are most adamant about not having done so, and yet when we recover the car– often in other parts of the City– the fobs or keys are within the vehicle (mind you, fobs are NOT easy to duplicate).

If you don’t make the foolish habit of doing this, we commend you. But please know that this practice still affects you and your family’s safety. Criminals coming into our community and finding cars to steal (or to break into) with ease only brings more opportunistic criminals roaming our streets.

Keep in mind that these criminals conduct ‘Door Checking’ in which they walk our streets, enter our parking lots and garages and tug on the door handles. If it opens, they know the fobs are likely somewhere in the vehicle. They push the start button and they’re off!!

Lastly, during the warmer months, criminals KNOW and take advantage of people who leave their keys on their tires when parked at the beach or park or trail head. Don’t do that.

We owe it to each other to live a responsible Big City Smarts kind of life. The West Los Angeles Area is a beautiful, safe community and sometimes it’s easy to forget that we are still part of a huge metropolis, and all that goes with it.

Talk to your friends, neighbors, coworkers and family members about this too!

1.  IN MEMORY OF TOM PATERSON

Tom Paterson, Office Manager for HWPOA for many years, passed away last week at his home in Valley Village.  Born in Chicago, of which he was very proud, Tom lived with his mother in Valley Village for many years. He served as President of Valley Village Homeowners Association and often  worked with other associations throughout the city.  He was always interested in his community, was very knowledgeable about planning and zoning issues, and we were fortunate to have been able to use his expertise in Holmby Westwood.  Tom retired in 2013.

We will dedicate our April meeting in Tom’s memory.  He will be greatly missed.

The LAX FlyAway bus stop in Westwood will be moving to a new location closer to student housing and dormitories, officials announced Monday.

Starting March 18, the new location will be on Gayley Avenue, just north of Strathmore Place on the east side of the street. Previously, the Westwood FlyAway stop was a nearly 1-mile walk into Westwood Village from the campus, officials said.

6.  MORE FUNDS TO FIX L.A. STREETS

Dear Neighbors:

Earlier this month, I released my annual Revenue Forecast report which provided updated revenue estimates for this fiscal year and projected how much money will come into the City’s coffers next year.

As part of the report, I noted a major increase to the City’s Street Damage Restoration Fee (SDRF) Fund. The SDRF — money paid by utility companies for street damages — was the subject of a 2014 audit by my office. Because of changes made through a partnership with the City Council, SDRF receipts are set to grow to $40.2 million this year and $70.5 million next year — 10 times the revenue we recovered for the fee in 2018. This will allow the City to fix more streets that badly need it now and in the future!

To read the full Revenue Forecast report, click here: http://bit.ly/Revenue2019.

Very truly yours,
Ron Galperin
L.A. Controller

2.  MORE PARKWAY TREES FOR LITTLE HOLMBY

Holmby Westwood Green Team
Planting Event
on Malcolm and Manning Avenues

Saturday, March 30
9AM to 12 PM

The Holmby Westwood Green Team will plant 12 more parkway trees on Malcolm and Manning Avenues on Saturday, March 30 beginning at 9:00 am.  Please come join us to take part in another great day to replenish our neighborhood tree canopy.   TreePeople volunteers will plant the trees and we need your help assisting the planters—not strenuous work at all, just fun and an important help for the day.

We will plant trees along the 700, 800 and 900 blocks of Malcolm Avenue and on the side parkway of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority at Hilgard and Manning Avenue.  Parking will be relaxed along Malcolm from 8AM to 1PM for the volunteers to park.

Our Holmby Westwood Green Team has worked hard throughout the glorious rainy weekends to talk with homeowners to obtain their permission to plant and care for the free trees, which are provided by TreePeople and CityPlants.  With this, the Green Team will have planted 26 new trees in Holmby Westwood this year.

We welcome more Little Holmby neighbors joining us in our “greening” efforts.  In the coming year we will plant more trees and work with UCLA and TreePeople to develop ways to keep Little Holmby green, healthy and thriving.  Please contact us to find out more: Kathryn Welch Howe (khowe.kwh@gmail.com) and Marnie Bodek (mossbodek@msn.com).

Hope you saw the recent LATimes article on the work of the Holmby Westwood Green Team:

3.  SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY – DEVON/BIRCHWOOD

A homeowner reported the following incident that occurred earlier this week.  Please be alert when walking around the neighborhood.

I was out with my dog around 5:20 PM. At the bottom of Birchwood facing Devon (the wrong way on a one way street) was a Black Nissan Altima with a black female driver and black male passenger, both in their mid-20s.  A car coming up Birchwood stopped and explained it was one way. They didn’t move. I walked down towards them with my dog.  They backed up 6 feet almost hitting me. They stopped and the male passenger looked like he was getting out of the car.  Then he looked down and noticed my dog, a pit bull mix.  He said to the driver “he has a dog” and they immediately drove off turning right on Wilshire. The license plate is 7JFK932. Black Nissan Altima.

4.  DEALER AD PLATES NOW ILLEGAL

As of January 1, the State has made it easier for you and law enforcement to identify suspicious vehicles. Cars and trucks must now have either permanent or temporary numbered plates on both the front and back of the vehicle.

The dealer ad paper plates on new cars we have seen for decades are a thing of the past. This can be a significant deterrent to crime in our area, as it will now be easier for law enforcement to identify and investigate crimes involving vehicles.

5.  FREE BULKY ITEM DROP-OFF EVENT

It’s time for spring cleaning!  Do you have furniture, oversized toys, appliances, and other items to get rid of?  It’s time to purge!

6.  IRS SCAM WARNING – PHONE CALLS & EMAILS

Watch Out for IRS Impersonator Scams This Tax Season

Scammers and cyber-thieves continue to use the IRS as bait. The most common tax scams are phone calls and emails from thieves who pretend to be from the IRS. Scammers use the IRS name, logo, fake employee names and badge numbers to try to steal money and identities from taxpayers.

Taxpayers need to be wary of phone calls or automated messages from someone who claims to be from the IRS. Often, these criminals will say taxpayers owe money and demand payment right away. Other times, scammers will lie to taxpayers and say they’re due a refund. The thieves ask for bank account information over the phone. The IRS warns taxpayers not to fall for these scams.

Click here for a list of tips that will help filers avoid becoming a scam victim.

7.  L.A. MARATHON – NEXT WEEKEND

1.  DAYLIGHT SAVINGS REMINDER

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour before you go to bed Saturday night, March 9. Daylight savings begins this Sunday, March 10! It’s time to “spring forward” – set your clocks forward one hour!

Daylight Saving Time is also a great time to check the things that keep us safe and ready for emergencies. It is a good time to replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, double check the expiration dates on your emergency kits and replace missing/expired items.

2.  NO ON HILGARD HIGH RISE (AGORA) – UPDATE

From the Save Hilgard Avenue group:

Our petition numbers are growing fast, and another 50 lawn signs will go up within the next week.   If you know of anyone who needs a sign for their lawn, please email emagna@msn.com or call/ text 310.963.1188. The new signs say “No High Rise on Hilgard,” so we want to place them on visible streets. Also, see the latest Daily Bruin article linked below, in which the writer calls out zoning laws— the first time UCLA students have acknowledged the rules in place. Our Save Hilgard website/ petition is linked from this article.

http://dailybruin.com/2019/02/28/ucla-needs-to-address-housing-availability-with-its-fast-growing-student-body/

Excerpt from the Daily Bruin article:
As a public university, UCLA’s first and foremost responsibility is to its students. Prioritizing out-of-state admissions because of the money it brings in contradicts that idea, especially considering we already have a housing problem on campus. UCLA can’t grow indefinitely, and Westwood’s community has already pushed against its growth.

The Agora building, a private housing venture in Westwood intended for students, was proposed to city planners at more than four times the height and three times the square footage allowed by the area’s zoning laws, inciting a petition against it from local homeowners.

By all intents and measures, The Agora indicates a point where housing can no longer match the student population. Projects like this should be unnecessary: They disrupt and disregard zoning laws. This is reflective of the root cause behind the overwhelming housing demand in Westwood: the student body’s size.

3.  USPS MAIL SERVICE COMPLAINTS

6.  SB 50 – HOUSING CONSTRUCTION BILL

This week, Councilmember Koretz introduced a resolution in formal opposition of California State Senate Bill 50 (Wiener) that ostensibly seeks to mandate upzoning in cities throughout California to increase affordable housing and density along transit corridors regardless of local jurisdiction’s zoning laws.

The resolution points out that SB 50 would allow construction of higher density multi-family housing developments near major transit stops that are out-of-compliance with local land use regulations and procedures and requests that the City of Los Angeles oppose the bill in its 2019-20 State Legislative Program, unless the bill is amended to exclude the City of Los Angeles from its provisions. Los Angeles already has its own increased density mechanisms that are being tailored to better fit the city’s many unique neighborhoods.

Councilmember Koretz pointed out that “While we all agree that we need to build more affordable housing, particularly near transit, SB 50 focuses mainly on the creation of market-rate housing and takes away planning oversight from local jurisdictions.  Furthermore, Los Angeles is more progressive than many California cities in that it already incentivizes multifamily development through Measure JJJ and the Transit Oriented Community program – both of which could be set back if SB 50 becomes law. State control of local zoning undermines not only the integrity of cities and counties, but strips residents of their ability to engage in a meaningful planning and community building process.  The passage of SB 50 would still threaten single-family neighborhoods in CD5 and elsewhere, where we could look forward to seeing tall narrow 4 to 5 story buildings towering over single-family homes until they are squeezed out and many analysts of the bill say they could still could be much taller.”

COMMUNITY ALERT – “DOOR CHECKING”
There has been a continuing trend targeting our neighborhoods. During the overnight hours, suspects are canvassing residential neighborhoods targeting cars parked on the street, driveway, unsecured carports or garages.

The MO of “door checking” has been taking place where suspects will check the door handle of vehicles parked in the street, driveway or an accessible carport or garage to determine if the vehicle is unlocked or if there are visible valuables inside. If unlocked, the suspects will enter the vehicle and ransack the interior and pop the trunk looking for any valuables.

Additionally, in vehicles that are started with a Fob Key, the suspects will depress the Start Engine button to see if the engine will start. This has been successful in cases where Fob Keys or ignition keys are left either inside the car or hidden inside the vehicle resulting in the car being stolen.

Previously while door checking cars, suspects have also been “door checking” the doors to homes. In previous incidents, the suspects have entered unlocked doors targeting small items left inside the doorway such as purses, wallets, brief cases, keys, and small electronics that are typically left within close proximity to the door.

Daytime and Evening Trends continue: The “Knock Knock” Burglary series continues. The suspects typically knock or ring the doorbell to determine if anyone is home. When there is no answer, the suspects enter the side or rear of the residence and force entry typically by smashing the window or door glass to gain entry. Suspects are targeting the master bed and bath as well as other areas of the home and removing jewelry, cash, small valuables and small electronics.

2.  POTHOLE REPAIRS – SCHEDULE CHANGE

Last month, HWPOA submitted a list of street repair requests to the Bureau of Street Services (BSS), as BSS had scheduled a day this week to repair potholes in the Westwood Neighborhood Council area.  However, due to rainy weather throughout the month of February, BSS has postponed the date that they will be in Westwood.  A new date has not yet been scheduled yet, but we will let you know when we find out more information.

3.  WESTWOOD LIBRARY – MARCH HAPPENINGS

4.  LADWP – E-COMMENTS FEATURE

The L.A. Dept. of Water and Power (LADWP) recently launched eComment on The Board of Water and Power Commissioners’ agenda home page.  The new eComment function allows members of the public to offer comment remotely on any agenda item or subject matter under the Board’s jurisdiction, beginning when the agenda is published – three days prior to a board meeting – until the Monday evening before the scheduled meeting.

The Board of Water and Power Commissioners meets regularly on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 10:00 a.m.  Constituents are not always able to attend Board meetings in person to give input to the Board for consideration.  eComment provides another channel for stakeholders to weigh in on important issues.

For more information and to begin using the eComment feature, please visit www.ladwp.com/board.

5.  NEW RESTAURANT – AUDREY AT THE HAMMER MUSEUM

Westwood now has a new prime place to eat.  Audrey is the new restaurant that opened this week inside the Hammer Museum.  Serving lunch and dinner inside the museum, there’s no entrance fee required to dine at the restaurant, which takes over the museum’s rather wonderful courtyard, as well as a portion of the ground floor.

The food feels seasonal and approachable; apps feels shareable and light, something to cap off a day or afternoon at the museum. To drink, there are some fun cocktails.

To read the full write-up on Eater LA, please click here:

Audrey is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday. Closed Monday along with the rest of the museum. 10899 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90024.

6.  MOVIE PREMIERE – STREET CLOSURES

Lionsgate will be holding the premiere of “Five Feet Apart” at 7:30pm on Thursday, March 7th at the Regency Bruin Theatre, located at 948 Broxton Avenue in Westwood Village.

There will be various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Five Feet Apart premiere, feel free to contact Talia Shnaider at 310-742-1064 or 818-926-8319.

PLEASE NOTE:
The Westwood Village Improvement Association (WVIA) acknowledges that Westwood Village, in general, and north Broxton Avenue, in particular, are viewed as desirable venues for a host of special events, such as movie premieres, private events and film screenings.

The District has been increasingly impacted by these closures over the past several years such that the WVIA Board of Directors is moving to adopt general guidelines with respect to evaluating petitions to close streets within the Westwood Village.

Make your voice heard – if you have concerns or questions regarding premieres and events in the district, please join us on Thursday, March 7th at 9:00am at the WVIA Business Attraction and Retention Committee.  This meeting will be held at 1002 Westwood Blvd, just south of Weyburn Ave on the east side of the street by Sur La Table.

All 4 Westwood Neighborhood Associations and the Westwood Neighborhood Council unanimously voted against the Agora High Rise.

Be aware that the “Agora” developer team is door knocking in Little Holmby and approaching people at Holmby Park; tell them we are all united in opposition.

3.  SECURITY – KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS

To help develop a greater sense of community and security, it is a good idea for you to know your immediate neighbors.

We suggest that you get the phone number (or email) for your neighbors: next door, on both sides, and across the street. You could even get the phone number of the people who live directly behind you.

Sharing contact information is a great way to interact with those who live closest to you.  You can notify neighbors if their garage doors are open, their car or house alarms have gone off, or water is seen flowing out of their home (and they can do the same for you).  In addition, when neighbors are out of town, you can help each other by taking in their mail or newspapers.

GROUP FOR PEOPLE WITH A CHRONIC LUNG CONDITION

I host a meeting every other month for people with chronic lung conditions other than TB or cancer. It’s a very informal support and information group, free of charge, which has been ongoing for about 15 years. The meetings bring together people who all share a common health problem, so we can feel completely comfortable talking about our lung issues in a warm, supportive environment. Each of us has a history of diagnosis, treatment, and day-to-day experience that is very helpful for answering our questions and getting the benefit of people’s personal experience. Even with the best of doctors, this is an invaluable service.

We are affiliated with a national non-profit organization, NTM Info & Research (NTMir), formed on behalf of patients with pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease for the purpose of patient support, medical education, and research. The organization comprises patients, physicians and other medical practitioners, and researchers.

Our group is open to all and the next meeting will be on Monday, February 25, at 1:15 p.m., at my house, 641 Warner Avenue, in Westwood.

Please feel free to contact me for more information. I look forward to speaking with you and meeting you!

THINGS THAT MOST COPS WOULD NEVER, EVER DO…

To get people thinking defensively, or to learn or adjust to big city life, I thought it would be interesting to share a few things that most cops would never do… Speaking for myself (and knowing what I know from 26 years of police work), I would never, ever do the following:

I would NEVER leave my cell phone or lap top on a coffee shop table and turn away even for a moment (much less leave it on the table to go use the bathroom or order a refill).

I would NEVER hang my purse or backpack off the back of my chair at any restaurant or public location (I keep it between my feet).

I would NEVER leave my purse or wallet in my shopping cart and turn away, even for a moment (I strap it around my body as I shop).

I would NEVER leave anything of value in my car and, if for some reason I didn’t have a choice, I would hide it in the trunk and then change my parking space (even loose change or a pair of sunglasses may get you a broken window).

I would NEVER walk and talk on my phone on any public street (if I had to look at or talk on my cell phone I would stop at a lighted place and put my back against a wall before glancing at my phone in public).

I would NEVER leave my car unlocked or the fob in the center console (I tend to check and recheck obsessively).

I would NEVER drive with my doors unlocked.

I would NEVER leave my house without locking all the doors and windows, or leaving on a few lights and my stereo to an audible level and petting my three blood thirsty dogs.

Most importantly, I would NEVER not trust my instincts… They’ve always served me well.  I encourage you to do the same…

Best to you all,
Officer Maria Gray

2.  PARKING PERMIT SOLICITATION BY UCLA STUDENTS

We received a report that a UCLA student posted a request online to purchase a parking permit in the neighborhood.

It is against the law to sell your parking permits to anyone, students or others, who are unaffiliated with your household! If you do so, then you would be deemed at fault and subject to punishment.

Councilman Koretz would appreciate receiving any specific information garnered about the students who are soliciting people in the neighborhood, such as their name or contact info, and a copy of their request to purchase a parking permit.  If you have any specific information, please let us know right away.  We will pass it on to Councilman Koretz’s office, and his staff will contact the students and discourage them from pursuing this illegal action.

3.  DOGS OFF-LEASH AT HOLMBY PARK

HWPOA has received several reports of people not following the rules at Holmby Park.  Dog owners regularly let their dogs run off-leash on the golf course.

Signs at the park state “No Dogs Off Leash. Only registered golfers allowed on putting greens and turfgrass”.  Offenders could face fines if caught disobeying the rules.

If you would like to report a violation, please call:

  • LAPD Non-emergency:  877-275-5273
  • City of LA Animal Services:  213-485-0494

The Holmby Park Golf Course is not a dog park.  If you would like your dog to be off-leash, please visit the dog park at Westwood Rec. Center.  Thank you!

2.  STREET REPAIR REQUESTS

The Bureau of Street Services has scheduled a Small Asphalt Repairs (SAR) truck (which is described as 1 small asphalt repair truck, consisting of 2 workers and asphalt), for the Westwood Neighborhood Council area, to perform small asphalt repairs on February 27, 2019.

The Westwood Neighborhood Council has asked us to submit suggested locations in our neighborhood for small street repairs. The city will only send the SAR truck to a total of 15 locations in the entire Westwood Neighborhood Council area, so Holmby Westwood will only see a handful of repairs.

The type of repairs that can be addressed with this program include the following:
– Potholes and pop outs
– Skin patching of eroded or cracked areas
– Some repairs on concrete streets

If you are aware of any spots in our neighborhood that would be particularly good candidates for this program, please send requests to Dana at hwpoa@aol.com no later than Monday, February 11.  Please only send street repair requests, not sidewalks or curbs.

NOTE: Street repaving is not part of this program.  Please do not submit requests to repave streets.

Will you know if someone is standing at your front door or accessing your front or side access gates now?
Although overall Part 1 crime is significantly down for the area, Residential Burglaries continue to trend throughout the area,  It is important to remain vigilant and not become complacent when it comes to securing and safeguarding our homes, automobiles and persons AT ALL TIMES!

Immediate Detection, Notification and Verification Technology is critical in determining when a crime is occurring and in progress at your home.  An alarm alone is no longer sufficient.  There must be a secondary immediate means of notification and verification to support whether or not the alarm is valid or false.

Additionally, residents should be notified and aware when there is physical activity at key entry points of the property.  These key locations are the front door, any side access points to the rear of the property, and any rear doors or accessible areas from the backyard.  Please take a few moments to review this news video:  https://ktla.com/2015/08/28/after-attempted-home-invasion-in-valley-village-lapd-looks-for-suspect-for-hours/

Dear supporters,

We are writing to share that the Daily Bruin’s Editorial Board has just delivered a resounding attack of the Agora proposal. In this editorial, the Board writes,

“Developers in the neighborhood have long taken advantage of students’ need to live near campus, and The Agora seems just another example.”

You must read this. It will make you Bruin proud. Here is the link:

1.  TREES, BEAUTIFUL TREES

Holmby Westwood now has 13 new Parkway Trees — seven Coast Live Oaks (Quercus agrifolia) on Malcolm and six Olive Trees (Olea europaea) on Manning.

Thanks to the Holmby Westwood Green Team and Malcolm and Manning owners, a festive Tree Planting on January 26th brought many neighbors together with TreePeople volunteers to plant the beautiful free trees.  Be sure to walk over and see the trees—each has been named by the homeowner and you will see the care instructions on each tree.  The Green Team project received positive coverage in the Los Angeles Times and Councilmember Paul Koretz recognized the effort with a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Los Angeles.

The HW Green Team will continue to build appreciation for our unique Parkway Trees and to work with owners, both to care for our trees and to replace those that are missing.  Please continue to follow their progress here and in future postings on the HWPOA website.  If you have any questions or would like to get involved, contact the HWGreen Team coordinators: mossbodek@msn.com and khowe.kwh@gmail.com.

The developers  of “The Agora” project at 900 Hilgard (SE corner of Hilgard and LeConte) have filed an application with the city for a 16 story, 194 ft. in height, student residential high rise on a property that is zoned for not higher than 45 ft. or 3 stories. It is 4 times the height allowed and 3 times the amount of sq. ft. allowed.

Please voice your opposition to a huge project that violates height limits on Hilgard.  Sign the petition below.  The HWPOA Board voted to oppose the project.

BURGLARY ON MAPLETON
Brazen thieves rammed through the gate of a Los Angeles mansion Thursday night, making off with a 1,000-pound safe filled with $300,000 in cash and jewelry.  Click below to read the article and watch a video from the news:

Burglary in Holmby Hills

BURGLARY PREVENTION TIPS
Side gates that are left unsecured or ajar are a draw for suspects to quickly and quietly access your backyards. Packages delivered and left on door stoops also indicate, at a glance, that no one is home.

Remember that residential burglaries typically happen during the day. So, use your alarms, lock your doors and close your windows, even if leaving for a quick trip to the store.  Your system should include instant notification to your smartphone if someone is at your front door, the sides or your house and/or your backyard.

What to look for? Look for cars in your neighborhood containing multiple young people together, both male and female, wearing cinched hoodies (the equivalent of modern day masks when cinched tight enough), in rental vehicles (as indicated by the rental bar code stickers in the windows), or vehicles with paper plates, or vehicles with excessively tinted windows, often with visors down, or any combination of these descriptors. Seeing such described vehicles or young people wearing hoodies does not necessarily make them criminal, but they deserve a second, and even third, look. And let them know they’re being looked at!  You may want to pick up your cell phone and stare to give the impression that you’re calling the police about them. Let them know that your neighborhood is a watchful, cared for community, that looks out for one another and they’d better move on and move on quickly.

SEEKING UPHOLSTERER & MOBILE CAR WASH

I would like to put a couple of questions to my neighbors…

  • Can anyone recommend a good upholsterer?  I need to have new slipcovers made for a sofa and chaise.
  • Can any recommend a good mobile car wash service?

Thank you!

1.  TREE PLANTING EVENT IN HWPOA – SATURDAY

Join the fun!  Everyone is welcome!

The Holmby Westwood Green Team’s first parkway tree planting is scheduled for Saturday, January 26th from 9 AM to 12  Noon.  Trees will be planted on Manning Avenue between Hilgard and Malcolm and in the 700 block of Malcolm Avenue. Councilman Paul Koretz, whose office has been helpful to our effort, will  join us to inaugurate the planting. Tree People volunteers will plant the trees and we welcome neighbors’ help and good cheer.  Please let us know if you will join us by emailing Marnie (mossbodek@msn.com) or kathryn (khowe.kwh@gmail.com)

For safety, streets will be closed 8 am to 1pm:  Manning Avenue between Hilgard and LeConte; and Malcolm between Glenmont and Manning.

This should be a fun and exciting event for Holmby Westwood.  The Green Team plans to work with neighbors and Tree People to replant 300 of our missing parkway trees.  Please see the HWPOA website for information: https://www.holmbywestwoodpoa.org/?page_id=1301

2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

BURGLARY FROM VEHICLE
Incident #: 190804795
10800 BLOCK LINDBROOK DR  |  1/20/2019 @ 10:30 AM

2ND STORY BURGLARY PREVENTION
Please remember the importance of securing your 2nd story doors and windows and make sure you include the 2nd story in your game plan when equipping your residence with an alarm system (preferably one with a system of instant notification to your smart phone).

Keep in mind that most of these burglary suspects are young, males, and while it seems impossible for us to imagine anyone being able to climb up to your 2nd (or even 3rd) story, it’s actually very common and seemingly way too easy for them to do so.  Detectives, via their interviews with arrested burglary suspects, have discovered that burglars often believe that if a house is alarmed, the 2nd story is often not included in the alarm system and it makes it a desirable entry point into your home.

Also, let’s make it as hard on them as possible.  Please remove ladders, lawn furniture, large planters or any other items that they can use to climb on and access your 2nd story.  You must look at your home and yard and actually “think like a bad guy” who is trying to breach your home.  Where are your points of weakness or vulnerability?  Where can they secrete themselves and be most secluded?  What can they climb on?

3.  MOVIE PREMIERE – STREET CLOSURES

The Joe Lewis Company is coordinating the arrivals for the premiere of “What Men Want”, to be held at the Regency Village Theater, on Monday, January 28, 2019.

There will be various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact event coordinator, Mary Pat Kasravi, at 818-402-1073.

4.  FELLOW RESTAURANT  – NOW OPEN FOR DINNER

HWPOA would like to support local businesses.  Fellow (www.fellow.la), which opened last year in the heart of Westwood Village, has expanded to full service including dinner and cocktail service.

Fellow’s dinner cuisine is described as “modern contemporary with a soulful edge; a melting pot of global influences” showcasing a true New American counter culture to nouvelle cuisine. Items on the menu include Ora King Salmon Tartare, Calamari Kung Pao, Sumac Dusted Crispy Spanish Octopus, and a Red Wine Braised Wagyu Beef Cheek.

Fellow’s cocktail program showcases classic cocktails with modern twists, utilizing interesting and fun ingredients along side a sophisticated local beer and wine offering.

Fellow is housed in one of the first buildings ever constructed in  Westwood, the location of the legendary Moustache Café. Chef Michael’s dessert menu will even include a take on the Moustache’s famous Chocolate Soufflé.

Fellow is located at 1071 Glendon Avenue, LA, CA 90024. For more information, visit www.fellow.la and please follow @fellowlosangeles for further updates.

5.  SEPULVEDA TRANSIT CORRIDOR PROJECT MEETINGS

Metro is conducting a Feasibility Study to identify and evaluate a range of high-capacity rail transit alternatives between the San Fernando Valley and LAX, including connections to existing and planned Metro bus and rail lines, including the Orange, Purple, and Expo Lines.

Thanks to all who took the online survey to share thoughts about traveling the Sepulveda Corridor.  More than 6,000 people took the survey and provided valuable feedback to Metro’s project team.

The next round of community meetings will include an update on the study, including refined concepts for the San Fernando Valley-Westside connection and initial concepts for the Westside-LAX connection.
