1.  KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE WHILE YOU ARE AWAY

If you are going away this holiday weekend, please remember to follow these suggestions to keep your home safe:

  • Alert your alarm company and neighbors
  • Have someone pick up the newspaper and mail
  • Don’t leave your porch light on all day
  • Don’t pack the car in clear view of others

Enjoy your travels!

2.  WESTWOOD AREA ROBBERY ALERT

Between 11/17/16 and 11/22/16, two Street Robberies and one Business Robbery occurred in the Westwood and North Village neighborhoods. In the Street Robberies, the suspects targeted pedestrians walking to or from their parked vehicles on the sidewalk. The suspects approach the victims on foot from behind while simulating a weapon demanding the victim’s property.

The below crimes are being investigated by the West Los Angeles Area Robbery Detectives.

  • 11/22/16, 1:00 PM 10900 block Roebling Drive. Street Robbery-Wallet.
  • 11/18/16, 7:45 PM 10600 block Wilkins Ave. Street Robbery-Money, Watch.
  • 11/17/16, 7:20 PM 1100 block Westwood Blvd. Business Robbery-Purses.

Property crimes and Robberies tend to increase during the holiday season. The Los Angeles Police Department recommends the following prevention tips:

  • Stay alert and always remain aware of your surroundings.
  • Whenever possible, avoid carrying excess cash or valuables, leave expensive jewelry and electronics secured at home.
  • Avoid walking alone at night and keep to well lighted, populated areas.
  • Do not leave or store purchases, gifts, or packages inside an unattended vehicle while continuing to shop or running additional errands.
  • While driving to your destination, check the rear view mirror to ensure that you are not being followed. If you believe you are being followed, make additional turns and drive to a well lit populated area, Police, or Fire station. You may call 911 from your cellular phone while driving.
  • No property is worth fighting over, remain calm, hand over property, and obtain as many details as possible. Call 911 as soon as possible.
  • To receive updated crime reports, sign up to receive alerts at www.crimemapping.com.

1.  RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY ALERT

From the LAPD:

Since late October there have been a series of residential burglaries occurring in the Westwood area and vicinity. The methods of entry vary from prying windows or doors, entering unlocked doors, smashing windows and entering through a doggie door.

Immediate detection is crucial to the prevention and apprehension of suspects in these crimes. Please take a few moments to view this news story: http://ktla.com/2015/08/28/after-attempted-home-invasion-in-valley-village-lapd-looks-for-suspect-for-hours/.

With the passage of an additional Prison Early Release Program, there is no room for complacency. Every effort MUST be taken to safeguard and secure property and valuables.

  • ALARMS: Ensure that security alarms are in good working order and set when not at home whether leaving for 10 minutes or 10 hours. Accessible upstairs doors & windows should have alarm sensors and upstairs rooms should have motion sensors to include the master bedroom.
  • ALARM RESPONSE: Consider a private patrol alarm response to enhance your current alarm and security system. In many cases private patrols are already contracted in many neighborhoods or associations.
  • SURVEILLANCE/SECURITY CAMERAS: Web based surveillance and doorbell camera systems will allow homeowners to view and monitor activity from any smartphone or computer which are motion sensor activated and will alert your device when there is activity. They will also lend valuable information and clues to the investigation.
  • MOTION SENSOR LIGHTING: Install motion sensor lighting around your home to illuminate normally dark areas around the home. This will also alert residents to outside activity around the home when motion lights are activated.
  • FRONT AND SIDE GATES: Ensure that all gates and access points to the side or rear of the residence are locked and secured.
  • DOOR AND WINDOW LOCKS: Ensure that all doors and windows are locked and secured with sturdy secured locks and that there are second locking mechanisms securing all doors and windows as a second line of defense.
  • MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU’RE HOME…Even when you’re not. Use lighting timers.
  • NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: Monitor suspicious activities in your neighborhood and alert your neighbors. Should the activity escalate to a crime about to occur, crime in progress or crime that just occurred, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!
  • SECURITY PATROLS: Consider after hours on site security at construction sites or major remodel projects. Many neighborhoods contract with private security patrols which monitor neighborhoods and can quickly respond to burglar alarm activations or reports of suspicious activity when they occur.

Sign up to receive Crime Alerts at www.crimemapping.com. In the upper right corner click “Receive Alerts” and complete the fields and parameters. You will receive notification alerts when crimes are reported.

2.  MOVIE PREMIERE – STREET CLOSURES

Samantha Sackler Productions is hosting the premiere of “TROLLS” at the Regency Village and Bruin Theatres, located at 961 Broxton Ave, at 4:00 PM on Sunday, October 23, 2016. There will be various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Erica Jean Pacheco or Marguerite Pellegrin of 4Wall Entertainment Lighting at 818-252-7481.

3.  LEARN ABOUT THE 2016 BALLOT PROPOSITIONS

There are a number of propositions that are on the ballot this year, and reading the voter guide can be an arduous process.  If you want to understand all of the issues before you cast your ballot but don’t want to read the entire voter guide….have a “Prop Party”!

A Prop Party is an event where voters get together with friends to discuss the ballot measures.  You can ask each guest to research one ballot proposition ahead of time – the pros/cons, who supports it, etc.  Then host a party – dinner, lunch, or whatever you’d like.  At the Prop Party, each guest then discusses their findings about the proposition they researched.  It’s a great way to socialize and learn about the ballot measures at the same time.

4.  HWPOA DUES REMINDER

Thank you to everyone who has paid their 2016 annual dues to HWPOA. We depend on you so that the Officers and Board of Directors can carry out their role of maintaining the residential environment that makes us one of the most sought after communities in LA.

DO YOU OWN A SPANISH COLONIAL REVIVAL HOUSE?

Hello neighbors,

We recently purchased a 1935 Spanish colonial revival house on Malcolm Avenue, which we have begun to renovate.  We discovered that the original floor in the foyer was replaced with vinyl, which was in turn replaced with a stone tile.

We would like to replace the stone tile with flooring that is more in keeping with architecture of the house and the era in which it was built.  We would be grateful if you would let us know if you have a 1930s era Spanish colonial revival house with the original floor in the foyer and, if so, if you would allow us to see and photograph it.

Please send us an e-mail at ana@friendlycoach.com.

Many thanks you for your assistance,
Trip and Ana Friendly

1.  VOLUNTEER NEEDED – DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

HWPOA is seeking a volunteer to chair our Holmby Westwood Emergency Preparedness Program. Well over 200 earthquakes have recently occurred in the Salton Sea area, which Geological Survey experts predict may be an awakening of the San Andreas Fault. They predict our next major earthquake will be a 7.8, 3 minute quake – much stronger than the 6.5, 30 second Northridge quake.

We have been told by the Community Emergency Response Teams (part of the LA Fire Department) that we may not receive any public services for up to 6 weeks. It’s important for every household to prepare for an emergency.

Mayor Garcetti is asking all communities to implement a disaster plan. We have done a lot of the work already:

  • We have 2 written emergency plans – what to do BEFORE a disaster strikes and what to do AFTER a disaster strikes.
  • We have distributed HELP/OK signs and survival supply lists to all residents
  • We have a communications expert
  • Physicians and nurses have volunteered to help
  • We’ve arranged for space to store emergency supplies
  • We’ve arranged for 2 possible areas for neighbors to gather should they need assistance following a disaster.

Now we need someone with leadership experience to head up the implementation of this important program. Please contact Susan Reuben at susanjreuben@yahoo.com.

2.  DRIVERS – PLEASE SLOW DOWN

HWPOA continues to receive reports of drivers speeding through the neighborhood.  One homeowner reported a late model black BMW, with no rear license plate, that regularly races on Loring and Woodruff in close proximity to Warner Avenue School.  The driver, who has been seen by several neighbors, is a young man with dark hair.  Please drive safely and slow down!  Thank you.

3.  METRO PURPLE LINE EXTENSION WORK

Section 3: Potholing on Wilshire Blvd., From Veteran Ave. to Westwood Ave.

Beginning Friday, October 21st and continuing for approximately one month during night and weekend hours, Metro contractors will be performing underground utility investigations for Section 3 of the Purple Line Extension. Work will consist of excavation, trenching, installation of traffic control devices and trench plates.

Anticipated start date is Friday, October 21, 2016 and last for approximately 1 month.

Work Sites

  • Westbound/Eastbound Wilshire Blvd., between Veteran Ave. and Westwood Blvd.
  • Northbound/Southbound Gayley, between Lindbrook Dr. and Wilshire Blvd.
  • Northbound/Southbound Westwood, between Lindbrook Dr. and Wilshire Blvd.

What to Expect

  • .Temporary lane closures will be required; detours with signage will be implemented.
  • Parking restrictions will be implemented in the immediate area of the work zone.
  • Temporary bus stops with relocation signage will be implemented.
  • Anticipate lane reductions and left turn restrictions.
  • For emergencies or issues needing immediate attention only, please call the 24/7 hotline at (213) 922-6934.

4.  HOLMBY PARK IS IN THE MOVIES

Holmby Park is often used for filming.  Before the studios can use the park, they have to apply to a special deparatment under Parks and Recreation for a permit.  The Park Film Office is dedicated to providing information on rules, procedures, restrictions, billing and issuing permits. As for the costs, prep days are $150, film days are $450, clean-up days are $150.  There are many other ancillary charges.  Not only is it fun to see the crews working, but it is nice to know some money is being raised for Parks and Recreation. Often the studios pay to park their big trucks at Holmby while they are filming on a nearby residential street. Here are a few photos taken during a recent shoot.

4.  USPS COMMUNITY MEETING – UPDATE

Many thanks to Congressman Ted Lieu!

On Sept. 20, Congressman Ted Lieu arranged for a Special Discussion at the Westwood Community Council meeting with U.S. Postal Service representatives and Westwood community stakeholders regarding mail delivery, mail theft, and other postal issues affecting our neighbors and other business stakeholders.  (Special thanks to Janet Turner, Deputy to the Congressman for arranging this presentation.)

Ken Snavely, Los Angeles Postmaster; Edwin Mendoza, Manager, Barrington Post Office; and Angela Ferris, United States Postal Inspection Service – Mail Theft Division were knowledgeable and helpful in responding to questions and complaints.  Late-in-the-day delivery as many residents have experienced is being addressed and we should see improvement immediately.  “Vacation Hold” was discussed as was delivery of mail to the wrong house or, no delivery at all.  Mr. Mendoza was informed of the many problems in Westwood and assured us that these problems will be addressed.  Mail theft is a big problem and is being driven by methamphetamine use.  At present, there are four inspectors working on prevention and security within a new division formed in March, 2015.  Residents MUST remain vigilant:

  • Do not leave mail in a mailbox overnight.
  • Mail items inside your local post office.
  • Arrange for mail pick-up if you are out of town.
  • To report suspicious activity, call 1-877-876-2455.
  • One last reminder:  If you expect a delivery, do NOT be surprised if it is stolen.  Angela Ferris said you should be surprised if it is still there when you return home.

Sandy Brown

5.  LAPD REPORT – AUTO RELATED CRIMES

There have been several auto related crimes in the area in recent weeks:

  • One resident reported that her car was broken into overnight.  The perpetrators smoked in her car and took out an emergency bag.
  • On 10/3/16 at approximately 11:00 PM, there was a vehicle break-in/theft on the 400 block of Loring.
  • On 10/3/16 at approximately 5:30 AM, there was a carjacking at UCLA, where the gunman kidnapped the car owner for several hours.

Please see this LAPD Community Alert regarding motor vehicle theft prevention.  Don’t become the next victim!

6.  L.A. SANITATION – CLEAN STREETS

As part of Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Clean Streets initiative, LA Sanitation drove all of LA’s public streets and alleys (traveling over 22,000 miles!) and gave each block a “cleanliness score”. 1 is clean, 2 is somewhat clean, and 3 is not clean.

This data has been aggregated into operational grids which helps LA Sanitation strategically deploy resources, such as a new dedicated Clean Streets clean-up crew. The map shows the average score within each grid. Red grids contain a lot of dirty streets while green grids contain mostly clean streets.

How clean is your street?  Type in an address or click on a street to see how it fares.

7.  POLICE AND COMMUNITY TOGETHER (P.A.C.T.)

In September of 1991, a partnership was formed between the West Los Angeles Community Police Station and a group of civic-minded citizens, resulting in the formation of “Police and Community Together” (P.A.C.T.), a non-profit corporation.

P.A.C.T. is involved in fundraising to provide funding and equipment for the West Los Angeles Community Police Station that are either underfunded or not provided by the City of Los Angeles, enabling the Officers to better serve the community.  In addition, P.A.C.T. also subsidizes the Law Enforcement Youth Program and provides scholarships for the Cadets.

1.  RODENT ALERT

A homeowner on Lindbrook reported the following:

We hired a pest control company who told us that we have rodent issues outside our home. They feed off the garbage we put outside in the black bins. Apparently, these hungry and annoying rodents make little holes in our black bins and munch away especially at night! Kindly call 311 and have your black bins replaced if you see any holes or damage!

3.  PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOGS

We continue to receive reports from residents who have said that dog owners have not been responsible in cleaning up after their dogs. In some instances, the dog owners fail to clean up entirely. In other instances, the owner will clean up with a plastic bag, but then leave the plastic bag in the same spot.  Note:  some homeowners have security cameras that are recording these incidents.

If you own a dog, please clean up after him/her, and be sure to tell everyone who walks your dog to do the same (this includes family members, dog walkers, housekeepers, nannies, etc.). Thank you.

4.  LAPD ADVICE – AVOID BECOMING A FRAUD VICTIM

10 Things You Can Do to Avoid Fraud

  1. Spot imposters. Scammers often pretend to be someone you trust, like a government official, a family member, a charity, or a company you do business with. Don’t send money or give out personal information in response to an unexpected request — whether it comes as a text, a phone call, or an email.
  1. Do online searches. Type a company or product name into your favorite search engine with words like “review,” “complaint” or “scam.” Or search for a phrase that describes your situation, like “IRS call.” You can even search for phone numbers to see if other people have reported them as scams.
  1. Don’t believe your caller ID. Technology makes it easy for scammers to fake caller ID information, so the name and number you see aren’t always real. If someone calls asking for money or personal information, hang up. If you think the caller might be telling the truth, call back to a number you know is genuine.
  1. Don’t pay upfront for a promise. Someone might ask you to pay in advance for things like debt relief, credit and loan offers, mortgage assistance, or a job. They might even say you’ve won a prize, but first you have to pay taxes or fees. If you do, they will probably take the money and disappear.
  1. Consider how you pay. Credit cards have significant fraud protection built in, but some payment methods don’t. Wiring money through services like Western Union or MoneyGram is risky because it’s nearly impossible to get your money back. That’s also true for reloadable cards like MoneyPak, Reloadit or Vanilla. Government offices and honest companies won’t require you to use these payment methods.
  1. Talk to someone. Before you give up your money or personal information, talk to someone you trust. Con artists want you to make decisions in a hurry. They might even threaten you. Slow down, check out the story, do an online search, consult an expert — or just tell a friend.
  1. Hang up on robocalls. If you answer the phone and hear a recorded sales pitch, hang up and report it to the FTC. These calls are illegal, and often the products are bogus. Don’t press 1 to speak to a person or to be taken off the list. That could lead to more calls.
  1. Be skeptical about free trial offers. Some companies use free trials to sign you up for products and bill you every month until you cancel. Before you agree to a free trial, research the company and read the cancellation policy. And always review your monthly statements for charges you don’t recognize.
  1. Don’t deposit a check and wire money back. By law, banks must make funds from deposited checks available within days, but uncovering a fake check can take weeks. If a check you deposit turns out to be a fake, you’re responsible for repaying the bank.
  1. Sign up for free scam alerts from the FTC at ftc.gov/scams. Get the latest tips and advice about scams sent right to your inbox.

If you spot a scam, report it at ftc.gov/complaint. Your reports help the FTC and other law enforcement investigate scams and bring crooks to justice.
