2.  LAUSD CANDIDATES FORUM

On Sunday, April 23 at 5:00 PM at University High School, you are invited to attend a Candidates Forum for the LAUSD School Board.  The two candidates, Steve Zimmer and Nick Melvoin, are heading into an important run-off election in May.  For more information, please click here:

3.  UCLA REPORT

On Thursday, I attended a UCLA and Homeowner Association meeting chaired by Administrative Vice Chancellor Michael Beck and the Office of Government & Community Relations. These meetings are held quarterly in an effort to update the homeowner presidents about the campus.

I think you will find some of the information interesting:

  • 120,000 applications were submitted for 2017 admission to UCLA. 6,500 were accepted.
  • State funding for UCLA in 2007-08 was $643 million. Today, state funding is $491 million even though the school has added 5,000 more students. They are receiving less total dollars regardless of the increased enrollment. UCLA gets $25,000. per student from tuition and state funding. Higher out-of-state tuition that accounts for 23% of the student body helps to close that dollar gap.
  • Each UC Campus was asked to determine its maximum size in the year 2040. UCLA is near capacity today and some believe it is already over capacity but in 2040, campus enrollment will be 45,000 which would be an increase of ½ of 1% per year. There are 30,873 undergraduates today, 6,000 graduates, 3,500 graduate professors, and 3,000 graduates self-supporting (The Anderson School which is independent).
  • There are 38,000 Uber/Lyft trips to/from/within campus per week. That number is not a typo!!! 20% of those trips start and end on campus. Those using the ride service include visitors, employees, staff, students, and the hospital population.
  • Update on housing: UCLA is discussing potential housing sites to accommodate 4,500 new beds in the next 8 years. All sites are located on the Northwest and Southwest campus, west of Westwood Blvd.
  • UCLA is ranked in the top five among public institutions in the country. It is also ranked in the top five among public institutions in the world.

We should all be proud to have UCLA as our neighbor!! Go Bruins!

1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

Residents have reported the following incidents:

(1) Suspicious Car – A car parked on Le Conte near Hilgard, pulled a neighbor’s recycling bin to their car, pulled papers from the bin and brought the papers to the front seat.  I asked him and the female driver what they were doing and they looked upset (as if I caught them) and they told me they were recycling. They then drove off (leaving the blue bin in the street) and through Westwood Village …they then pulled over 3 different times to stop and then drive again.

This incident was reported to the LAPD, and here is a portion of the response from the LAPD:

While we can only speculate as to their motives, it is a good reminder to ensure that we are doing everything possible to protects ourselves and secure our property and personal information.

(2) Suspicious Characters – On April 10 at 10:30 PM I looked out the window on Strathmore (near Hilgard) and saw two people in dark clothing and ski hats walking on the street side of cars parked looking in the windows. They saw me and continued on towards Hilgard. I called 911 and they came and patrolled the street with search lights and the surrounding streets.  I don’t know if they found them. But be careful to lock cars and don’t leave ANYTHING in your car.

(3) Car Break-In – My car (on Strathmore near Hilgard) was broken into on the evening of April 12. It was locked but they opened it somehow.  They presumably used a new electronic device that opens doors and trunks so the robber doesn’t have to break windows.  There wasn’t much for them to steal except a coin purse. They came around 4:47am in a white car – either a Jetta or BMW 3 series.

1.  SEEKING NEW HWPOA BOARD MEMBERS

Join the Board of Directors
of
Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association

The HWPOA Board is seeking Holmby Westwood residents to volunteer to serve as a Director for 1 year. We usually meet on the second Tuesday of every month except for August and December. We ask only that you be a financially current member of the Association for the past 2 years and have an interest in maintaining and improving the quality of life we have all come to know and enjoy.

You will work with many neighbors who serve on the Board, some who have served for many years. This is a way to help your community, to work with city officials and departments, to plan events, and to support the protections in place today.

The Holmby Westwood community is over 80 years old and preservation, livability, and schools are key to its residential value. Serving on our Board of Directors is a way to safeguard one of the largest investments you will make in your lifetime.

We want the next generation to be able to carry on what we have fought to protect for these many years. Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association is a highly respected association throughout the city and, with your involvement, we hope that will continue indefinitely.

Our meetings are held at Belmont Village, Wilshire at Warner Ave., 8–9:30 PM. Our committees include: Security, Traffic, Holmby Park, Architectural Supervising Committee, 4th of July event, Emergency Preparedness, Filming (in the neighborhood), WLAPD liaison and more.

Please, contact Dana Glenn, our Office Manager, and let her know that you want to join our Board. You will have an extremely worthwhile experience while giving back to a community that has remained highly desirable for many years. That did not happen accidentally. It happened with a commitment from hundreds of our neighbors over 80 years!

Send an email to hwpoa@aol.com or call (310) 470-1785 to contact Dana. The deadline for submissions is April 10. We look forward to hearing from you!!

Many thanks,
Your HWPOA Board of Directors

2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

Two different residents on the 800 block of Malcolm reported the following events:

(1) A homeowner reported that her car was broken in to last week, sometime between 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 30 and 10:00 AM on Friday, March 31.  The car was locked and parked in the driveway.  The suspects rummaged through the car and stole a change purse.

(2) On Tuesday, April 4 at 8:15 pm, a woman rang a homeowner’s doorbell and told her that she had a beautiful rose bush and wanted to know what type of roses they were. The homeowner told her that they didn’t have a rose bush and the woman said it must be my next door neighbor’s (they do have a rose bush, which is not easily seen from the street). When she walked away the homeowner saw that she had a flashlight. This may have been a genuine question, but it also may have been a potential “knock knock” burglary where the criminals knock on the door to see if anyone is home before they break in.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY ALERT
Residential Burglaries continue to be trending throughout the region and are the crime of choice among the criminal gang rings. If you have been paying any attention to the recent news, the same type of MO and crime is occurring across Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Also making news headlines recently have been the reports of a half dozen or more celebrity or sports figures that have fallen victim to these same crimes.

Typically there are two areas that burglars will approach prior to breaking into a home. First, the front door to determine if anyone is home. Secondly, they will typically enter a side or rear gate and yard to access the back to gain or force entry into the home.

As a result I am recommending motion sensor cameras that will immediately detect an intruder entering these zones and provide immediate notification on your smart phone. In other words, your first alert will be a suspicious individual approaching your front door. The second will be receiving an alert and images of intruders entering your side/rear yard. It is now time to call 911.

If an individual is able to access any critical parts of your property without immediate detection and notification to you, your property is vulnerable.

Please take a moment to view this news story and video which was released recently: http://abc7.com/uncategorized/councilman-calls-for-$50k-reward-in-knock-knock-burglaries/1839678/

You may access crime mapping at www.crimemapping.com to review recent crimes in your area. Sign up to receive alerts when crime is reported in your neighborhood.

3.  STOLEN ITEMS – ARE THEY YOURS?

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

Police are trying to reunite burglary victims and their possessions following a raid on an LA business that “received stolen property.”

Police in Los Angeles Wednesday sought victims whose stolen property was recovered in August at a business raided by investigators.  The stolen items include hundreds of pieces of jewelry, high-value purses, collectible coins and sunglasses, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The items were recovered on Aug. 18, when police served a search warrant at a Los Angeles business “that was receiving stolen property,” according to an LAPD statement.  “Two victims of residential burglaries and one victim of a commercial burglary have positively identified their property,” police said. “The victims are located in the cities of Redondo Beach, Temple City and Valencia.”

Charges are pending against the owner of the raided business, which wasn’t identified, according to the LAPD.

Anyone who was a victim of a burglary between Jan. 1, 2016 and Aug. 17, 2016 is urged to check with Detective Marc Zavala at (818) 832-7510 or Detective Jeannette Santos at (818) 832-7511 after viewing images of stolen items at http://ow.ly/PYYB30aC22W.

4.  IN CASE OF EMERGENCY – CALL 911, NOT FIRE STATION

I have been asked by the firefighters at Station # 71 to please remind our residents that should an emergency arise that requires emergency service, please DO NOT CALL THE FIRE STATION directly.  You will be told to hang up and call 911.  Our station has been receiving calls because neighbors believe they will get faster emergency service when, in fact, it will take longer.  It is imperative that you always call 911.

Thank you,
Sandy Brown

5.  CITY OF L.A. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SURVEY

Concerned about emergencies and disasters? The City of Los Angeles wants to hear from you!

FROM: Kate Hutton, Public Information Officer, Los Angeles Emergency Management Department

The City of Los Angeles is updating its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) to prepare for disasters and needs public input. The LHMP is a plan to implement actions to reduce injuries and losses from disasters and ensure that the critical services and facilities of the City will continue to function after a disaster. Los Angeles has about 284 sunny days per year, but we do face the potential for earthquakes, floods, fires, hazardous materials incidents, power outages, infrastructure failure, transportation accidents, or even terrorism.

Angelenos know LA better than anyone else, so we want to hear from you. We’ve developed a survey for residents, business owners, and City employees to share what concerns them the most about potential disasters. Take this opportunity to let us know what concerns you before, during, or after a disaster!

Take the survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CityofLosAngelesLHMPSurvey

SoCal Gas Company will continue the new meter project on Mulholland Drive until Friday April 21, 2017. We were notified that the CPUC did not clear all the inspections and asked that other gas meters be located off the medium pressure main along Mulholland Drive.

SoCal Gas obtained an approval to continue to work. Once the project is completed and all clearances have been made, I will then be able to notify Bureau of Street Services regarding the resurfacing project. We apologize for any inconveniences this has caused.

Thank you all for your attention. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me at 818-971-3088.

1.  HWPOA BOARD MEETING – CANCELED

The April HWPOA Board meeting has been canceled.  The Annual Membership meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9 and the next Board meeting will be on June 13.

SSA Security Group (Patrol and response) and Moore Protection (Monitoring) have been invited to make a presentation to the community by some of our HW neighbors who were previous clients in Pacific Palisades.  HWPOA is not sponsoring this event. Invitations and information were mailed earlier this week.

4.  NEW USPS SERVICE – INFORMED DELIVERY

The USPS has a new service available called Informed Delivery. If you sign up, you can see a scan of all of your incoming mail that is expected to be delivered. That way, once your mail is delivered later in the day, you know if anything has been lost/stolen.

Users will have the option of getting an email with photos of the front of card- and letter-size mail pieces that are due to arrive that day, or a day or two later.

It might also be handy if you are expecting something important, and don’t want to have to wait until you get home to find out if the item has arrived or not.

For more information or to sign up, please click here:

BURGLAR SURVEY

The following report is from Portland, Oregon but is relevant to anywhere that burglars commit crimes.

We asked 86 burglars how they broke into homes

What burglars said were the biggest deterrents, what didn’t stop them and how you can protect your home.

By Kyle Iboshi, KGW News,  Portland, Ore.

Do you ever wonder whether your home security system or “Beware of Dog” sign actually keeps burglars away?

We did too. So KGW’s investigative team sent letters to 86 inmates currently serving time for burglary in the Oregon Department of Corrections.  The inmates were asked to respond anonymously to 17 questions detailing how they broke in, when the crime occurred and what they were looking for.

What we learned could help you keep your home safe from burglaries.

For the complete story, please CLICK HERE.

6.  CURB PAINTING CONCERNS

A homeowner recently had a negative encounter with a curb painter:

The curb painters came to my house and spoke with my nanny and was extremely rude.  I went out to confront him and his response was “I am not here to speak with your maid.  I painted your curb and wanted to get paid.”  He came to the house twice.  He called her a liar.  He cursed at me.  This is not someone that we should be supporting.

Curb painters are supposed to get a permit from the city, but there are very few rules or regulations otherwise.  Please be cautious and use discretion when working with them.

1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

Residents have reported the following incidents:

(1) On Saturday, March 11 a home on the 200 block of South Beverly Glen Blvd. was burglarized.  The homeowners left their house at 7 PM and shortly afterwards their daughter heard noise by side of house which she thought was neighbor.  It is now clear that what she heard was perpetrators moving a ladder (which had been left on the side of the house by the gardeners) outside her window.  Most likely, the perpetrators climbed up outside daughter’s  window (thus explaining noise she heard and is  where ladder was found), saw her, then waited until she left around 7:30 and broke in.  She noticed a white pick up truck and another car across the street when she left; footage taken from a neighbor’s surveillance camera shows a white pickup truck on the street at 7:17 PM.

(2) On Monday, March 13, also on the 200 block of Beverly Glen Blvd., a  housekeeper heard noise between 1 and 1:30 a.m., alerted the homeowner, who threw on lights, and perpetrators fled.  A ladder (belonging to the homeowners, in their backyard), was found up against house.

4.  MULHOLLAND DRIVE – ROAD WORK UPDATE

SoCal Gas Company is currently installing a new gas meter beneath Mulholland Drive (14430 Mulholland Drive) between Nicada Drive and Beverly Glen Boulevard. The project requires a two-foot trench for both the north and south side of Mulholland Drive. Work will continue between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m until Friday March 31, 2017. The company feels they will be over before then but want to give themselves some more time. They encountered some solid rock on some portions which required considerable hand work, which has delayed the project.

To help you navigate around the work, flagmen will be directing traffic. The message boards will remind on both ends of Mulholland Drive. Please use Nicada Drive as an alternate route. As always, any emergency response vehicles will be given full access.

Thank you for your patience as we work to improve our aging infrastructure.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact CD5 Valley Director, Gurmet Khara at 818-971-3088 or Mike Harriel with SoCal Gas at 213-244-4633.

6.  SSA SECURITY GROUP & MOORE PROTECTION

As you may know, crime is up all over Los Angeles. We have had a number of break-ins in Holmby Westwood during both daytime and evening hours, including two break-ins when residents were home in the evening. This is very concerning. Two security companies (a patrol company and a monitoring company that work together in Pacific Palisades, Hancock Park, Windsor Square and part of Brentwood) made a presentation to some of our residents a couple of months ago. They need 130 homes to sign up in order to place a 24 hour car in our community and already have 80 homes signed up. Only off duty and retired police are hired for patrol, and their response time is generally less than 5 minutes and usually 2-3 minutes.

You will be receiving a mailer from both companies shortly. If you wish to learn more, contact:

7.  NEW CHIEF OF POLICE AT UCLA

Earlier this week, Tony Lee took the oath of office as UCLA’s new Chief of UCPD.  HWPOA’s President Sandy Brown, who was part of the interview process for the new chief, attended the ceremony.

“Tony brings to UCLA a demonstrated background of strong public safety experience and a collaborative leadership style,” said administrative vice chancellor Michael Beck in a press release.

Lee has worked in the BHPD for 26 years, where he has served as acting chief of police, a lieutenant in the intelligence unit and an incident commander for events. He also oversaw the administration, field services and investigations departments.  Lee also trained at the FBI National Academy and the Senior Management Institute for Police, among other programs.

IMAGE WIRELESS – RECOMMENDATION

A few days ago my wife & I stopped in Westwood Village to buy a screen cover for her IPhone.  We went to:

Image Wireless
1006 Broxton Avenue
310-657-2337

In addition to a reasonable price and very careful installation, the owner, Shawn Pak, updated the phone, added apps and was incredibly helpful in all respects for more than 1/2 hour.  What a pleasant surprise.

That’s how he has run his business in the Village for 26 years.  Many of our members have very little technical skill and would appreciate Shawn’s patient, helpful assistance at “Image Wireless”.

I highly recommend Image Wireless in Westwood.  Stop by the store the next time you need phone help!

HEROES FROM THE BIGG CHILL – THANK YOU!

Last Saturday evening (3-11-17), I was the recipient of the most wonderful random act of kindness.

Although I was able to momentarily thank my kindness-purveyors, I was so surprised that I didn’t think to get their names so that I could thank them again, more graciously.

I’m hoping that by telling my story here, perhaps these lovely folks are not strangers at all but are, in fact, my HWPOA neighbors.

After a movie & a Bigg Chill yogurt with my cousin, as I drove the bend from Hilgard onto my street, Wyton, I noticed a white SUV parked nearby with the headlights on.

Pulling into my driveway, the woman from the SUV surprised me by asking “Are you Carole?”  Behind her, I assumed, were her husband (still happilly enjoying what I now realize was his own Bigg Chill yogurt cup) & their daughter.  She told me they’d found my wallet & that they’d already tucked it into my mailbox.  I didn’t even know then that I’d dropped it upon leaving the yogurt shop.  They’d apparently found my address on my drivers license & made their way to my home to return the wallet.

How wonderful was that??

I would very much like to thank them more fully.  So, if any of you out there fits the bill, please stand up & let me know who you are.

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour before you go to bed Saturday night, March 11. Daylight savings begins this Sunday, March 12! It’s time to “spring forward” – set your clocks forward one hour!

Daylight Saving Time is also a great time to check the things that keep us safe and ready for emergencies. It is a good time to replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, double check the expiration dates on your emergency kits and replace missing/expired items.

3.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

Residents have reported the following 3 incidents:

(1) A homeowner reported a break in Saturday morning at his home on Dalehurst Ave. around 9:45 am.  The entry to the property was through a back door, where the suspects broke a glass pane to get in.  No one was home at the time.  They have filed a police report.

(2) Earlier this week a guy was walking toward my car, acting very strange. He looked like one of the guys who appeared at a neighbor’s door saying his friend lived at the home when they did not. I drove around the block to see where he was going. I observed him on Malcolm, Hilgard, Lindbrook and Weyburn.  As he was slowly walking down the street he would stop in front of numerous homes scoping them out and walking part way up some of the driveways. As he walked past the apartments he would stop and look in the apartments and their balconies. At one point, he walked up a stairway of an apartment building, tried to open the door and a window next to the door.  I called the UCLA police. The police car showed up shortly thereafter and arrested him. It turns out he had been arrested the day before for trespassing in a home on Loring. Unfortunately, trespassing is a misdemeanor, so he was released. The Sergeant of UCLA PD told me we should all look out for him and if you see him to call them. Their phone # is: 310-825-1491.

(3) A homeowner on Lindbrook recently reported seeing a silver car with New Jersey plates. There was a very suspicious couple inside and when the homeowner asked them what they were doing they both pointed at different homes and said they were waiting for someone. Please keep an eye out for this vehicle.

4.  ROAD WORK ON MULHOLLAND

SoCal Gas Company is preparing to install a new gas meter beneath Mulholland Drive (14430 Mulholland Drive) between Nicada Drive and Beverly Glen Boulevard. The project requires a two foot-trench for both the north and south side of Mulholland Drive. Work will begin Monday March 13th and will end Friday March 17th between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This extensive project requires a lane closure. To help you navigate around the work, flagmen will be directing traffic. Additionally, there will be message boards at both ends of Mulholland Drive (within the project scope), one at Beverly Glen and the other near the 405 warning drivers of the upcoming project. The message boards will be out on site tomorrow. Please use Nicada Drive as an alternate route. As always, any emergency response vehicles will be given full access.

SoCal Gas expects to complete this project in one week. Unfortunately, due to the scope of the project, crews are unable to do work on the weekends.

Thank you for your patience as we work to improve our aging infrastructure.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Council District 5 Valley Director, Gurmet Khara at 818-971-3088 or Mike Harriel with SoCal Gas at 213-244-4633.

1.  LAPD ALERT

The following incident took place recently in Valley Village.  While this is not in our immediate area, we are posting it as a reminder to take appropriate precautions to protect your home.

RESIDENTIAL HOT PROWL BURGLARY

3100 block Abington Drive: On Wednesday, 2/22/17, at 1:55 PM, unknown suspects rang the doorbell of residence several times. A resident was inside the home but did not respond to the door. Shortly after the suspects entered the rear yard and smashed a glass door to gain entry into the residence.

The victim hid inside the residence and phoned 911 prompting the police response while suspects were inside ransacking the residence. The Air Support Unit arrived overhead which caused the suspects to flee the residence. Several neighbors witnessed or observed the suspects fleeing through the neighborhood armed with a gun.

An area perimeter was established to contain the suspects and a K-9 search ensued for several hours into the evening. One suspect was located and apprehended as a result of the K-9 search. The second suspect managed to escape the area possibly through a ravine leading out of the contained area.

This is an active investigation and all leads will be pursued to identify and locate the additional suspect and any others connected to the crime.

Please take the time to review and follow the below alert and home security tips.

Review the video at this link: Home Invasion in Valley Village.

How will you be alerted if intruders are casing or breaking into your home?

Immediate Detection is key to prevention and apprehension. The Los Angeles Police Department recommends the following tips to help secure your home and harden the target:

  • SURVEILLANCE/SECURITY CAMERAS: Web based surveillance and doorbell camera systems will allow homeowners to view and monitor activity from any smartphone or computer which are motion sensor activated and will alert your device when there is activity. They will also lend valuable information and clues to the investigation.
  • ALARMS: Ensure that security alarms are in good working order and set when not at home whether leaving for 10 minutes or 10 hours. Accessible upstairs doors & windows should have alarm sensors and upstairs rooms should have motion sensors to include the master bedroom.
  • ALARM RESPONSE: Consider a private patrol alarm response to enhance your current alarm and security system. In many cases private patrols are already contracted in many neighborhoods or associations.
  • MOTION SENSOR LIGHTING: Install motion sensor lighting around your home to illuminate normally dark areas around the home. This will also alert residents to outside activity around the home when motion lights are activated.
  • GATES: Ensure that all gates and access points to the side or rear of the residence are locked and secured.
  • DOOR AND WINDOW LOCKS: Ensure that all doors and windows are locked and secured with sturdy secured locks and that there are second locking mechanisms securing all doors and windows as a second line of defense.
  • MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU’RE HOME…Even when you’re not.
  • NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: Monitor suspicious activities in your neighborhood and alert your neighbors. Should the activity escalate to a crime about to occur, crime in progress or crime that just occurred, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!
  • SECURITY PATROLS: Consider after hours on site security at construction sites or major remodel projects. Many neighborhoods contract with private security patrols which monitor neighborhoods and can quickly respond to burglar alarm activations or reports of suspicious activity when they occur.

You may access crime mapping at www.crimemapping.com to review recent crimes in your area. Sign up to receive alerts when crime is reported in your neighborhood.

7.  HISTORIC DESIGNATION OF WESTWOOD CHURCH

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

City Council Seeks To Designate Westwood Church Historic Over Congregation’s Objections

The Twenty-eighth Church of Christ, Scientist [on Hilgard between Lindbrook and Weyburn] contends historic designation is unlawful, but city leaders see it as a way to keep the church.

Over the congregation’s objections it would infringe on its religious freedom and be illegal, the Los Angeles City Council voted Friday to consider a church in Westwood be added to the list of historic- cultural monuments.

8.  SIDEWALK VENDING UPDATE

Several weeks ago, the City Council addressed an issue that continues to be highly contentious – sidewalk vending. Councilmembers held a thoughtful conversation over where and how sidewalk vending should be allowed.

Councilmember Koretz has heard from a number of constituents and stakeholders who have, on numerous occasions, voiced their opposition to street vending. The Councilmember is in favor of a fair and orderly process in which neighborhoods desiring street vending can opt-in.

After agreeing to a number of amendments, the City Council instructed the City Attorney to draft a new ordinance for final approval in the coming months.

5.  STK RESTAURANT AT THE W HOTEL

The following is a review of STK from a Holmby Westwood resident:

“Last Friday evening my husband and I took advantage of the STK’s offer to try their restaurant located in the W Hotel on Hilgard Avenue.  They offered a $50 coupon and two free drinks. We found the room which included the bar to be beautiful.  The ambient noise level was low enough so that it was easy to have a comfortable conversation.  A minor criticism is that we found the volume of the music a little too loud and the track selections repetitious.  The menu spotlights steak dishes which we ordered along with other items.  We found the steak was cooked perfectly and everything else was delicious. Even though the restaurant was moderately busy, we experienced very attentive service including a visit by the manager, Michael Victoria.  We feel fortunate to have this lively and lovely new restaurant in our neighborhood and highly recommend it.”

STK located at The W Los Angeles would like to offer the members of HWPOA a special gift to welcome you all to the restaurant, newly opened at The W Hotel here in Westwood.

Each household may receive a complimentary glass of sparkling wine along with a $50 Dining Credit towards your next visit to dine with us at STK.

Should you choose to accept the offer, STK will also keep you up to date on any special happenings at the hotel that might interest you.

1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

From Officer Christopher Ragsdale, regarding the rape that was reported in last week’s news:

The incident that occurred was an acquaintance rape, where the suspect and victim knew each other and spent the night together.  The victim is alleging that the relationship became non-consensual.  This was not an intruder or predator.  If there was a threat to the community (such as a stranger or predator rape), the LAPD would alert the community immediately.

Residential Burglaries
There has been a series of Residential Burglaries developing in the Westside communities. The suspects typically knock or ring the doorbell to verify if anyone is home. When there is no answer, the suspects enter the side or rear of the residence and force entry typically by smashing the window or door glass to gain entry. Suspects are targeting the master bed and bath as well as other areas of the home and removing Jewelry, cash, small valuables and small electronics.

Immediate detection is key to prevention and apprehension. Ensure that you have motion detection cameras that will immediately notify and alert you directly on your smart phone when activity is occurring at your front door or side access yards.

Several blue collection mailboxes have recently been vandalized by potential thieves.  This has occured at the three drive-thru mailboxes at the Barrington Circle Post Office as well as the mailbox on Sepulveda near Montana, but it’s possible that the vandalism has occurred on other mailboxes as well.

Residents have reported discovering sticky material just under the drop-in slots. It’s applied by vandals/thieves to catch letters with checks & credit card info.

Janet Turner, local field deputy for our US Congressman Ted Lieu, immediately followed up with the Barrington PO, who told her that their mailboxes are theft-proof and the sticky glue has been removed.  However, nothing is totally immune to thieves.

Please be careful if you use the blue USPS mail collection boxes and make sure your letters have dropped all the way inside.

4.  LADWP REPORT ON POWER OUTAGES

The HWPOA Board of Directors recently met with representatives from the LADWP to address our concerns regarding the numerous power outages in the area.

The representatives reported that the outages are usually due to failed cables and failed joints.  They are working to identify the worst performing circuits and replace the oldest and most problematic cables.  They hope to improve reliability and performance, which is made more difficult with increased building and growth in the area.

The map below shows the cable replacement in our neighborhood in recent years and planned for the future.

5.  STORMY WEATHER SAFETY TIPS

Winter storms can mean big trouble for Angelenos who don’t prepare for wet weather. Here’s what you can do to safely ride out any storm.

Before a storm

  • Prepare a basic emergency kit and store it in an accessible place. The kit should contain bottled water, flashlight, extra batteries, and a battery-operated radio or television
  • Keep phones charged in case you lose power.
  • Clear out debris from rain gutters, drainage channels, and pipes around your home.
  • Secure large items like trash cans, toys, and yard decorations that may block street drainage systems.
  • Get sandbags. Sandbags are available at select LAFD stations. A full list is available here or by visiting LAFD.org.

To report storm-related issues such as

  • Downed trees
  • Clogged storm drains
  • Flooding
  • Rock, land, or mudslides

Download the MyLA311 app or visit MyLA311.lacity.org! Use this app 24/7 to report issues. You can also include photos and geo-tag information with your reports to help crews respond and track reports you’ve submitted.

If stormy weather knocks down a power line

  • Call DWP at 1-800-DIAL-DWP or 911 immediately.
  • Assume the line is dangerous; stay away and warn others to do the same.
  • Do not remove fallen tree limbs or other debris from power lines. Tree limbs and other objects can conduct electricity that can shock anyone coming in contact with them.

During a storm

  • When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors! Do not go outside if you see lightning or hear thunder.
  • Limit non-essential travel and avoid standing flood waters.
  • If you encounter a flooded roadway, Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Just 6 inches of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.
