2.  DWP SCHEDULED POWER OUTAGE

The Dept. of Water & Power has scheduled a power outage for Saturday, February 3, 2018 in the Holmby Westwood area to replace cables.  Affected streets include:

  • 10564-10582 Lindbrook Dr.
  • 10636 Wilshire Blvd.
  • 10595-10655 Ashton
  • 1230 Westholme Ave.

Time outage will begin: 6:00 AM
Expected outage duration: 8 hours

The DWP usually will have 2 outages approximately 3-4 weeks apart: depending on the scope of work this time can be longer or shorter.

The length of time of the actually outage duration will always be kept as short as possible. However, they do have other organizations involved and at times may not get the authorities as scheduled, which then pushes the start times out and obviously the end times as well.  The DWP is hoping to minimize the impact on their customers.

HWPOA has contacted the LAPD and requested additional patrols in the area during the power outage, as alarms and other security features that rely on electricity will be disabled during the outage.

3.  LETTER REGARDING HOLMBY WESTWOOD SECURITY

6.  WESTWOOD HORIZONS UPDATE

A situation which began with the shock of eviction notices being placed on the doors of Westwood Village senior tenants on Thanksgiving 2016, has finally been resolved in a manner acceptable to the remaining tenants and the 947 Tiverton Avenue building’s Arizona-based owners, Watermark.

Under a “Tenant Habitability Plan” (THP) approved by all parties and supported by Councilmember Koretz, the tenants will be relocated to the Glendon, a nearby fully-accessible apartment building, have catered meals to replace the in-house dining room they enjoyed for decades at the old building, and be furnished accessible bathtubs, as needed, at Watermark’s expense.

While the tenants are living at the nearby Glendon, Watermark will seismically retrofit the Tiverton building and do a massive upgrade to its electrical, elevator and heating-air conditioning equipment, among other things. The work is expected to take at least a year and the tenants who negotiated the THP conditions, with the help of the legal aid firm Bet Tzedek, will then be able to return to Tiverton under the same rent-controlled circumstances they have enjoyed for years.

2.  SECURITY SUGGESTIONS

Due to recent criminal activity in Holmby Westwood:

  • Burglaries during all hours of the day and night (including a number of burglaries when residents were at home & 1 attempted burglary when the resident was home)
  • Car break-ins (even behind gates)
  • Car thefts
  • Package thefts

Here are some suggestions:

  1. Turn your alarm on even when you are at home
  2. Do not confront a burglar in your home – go to a secure room where you can lock yourself inside and call 911
  3. Park your cars in your garage
  4. Consider installing flood light motion cameras all around the exterior of your home
  5. Consider installing a camera door bell, such as Ring.com. There are a number of similar companies from which to choose. Do your own due diligence.
  6. Place camera security signs in your windows
  7. Install motion detectors and glass break alarms in strategic locations inside your home.

3.  STREET REPAIR REQUESTS

The Bureau of Street Services has scheduled a Small Asphalt Repairs (SAR) truck (which is described as 1 small asphalt repair truck, consisting of 2 workers and asphalt), for the Westwood Neighborhood Council area, to perform small asphalt repairs on February 28, 2018.

The type of repairs that can be addressed with this program include the following:
– Potholes and pop outs
– Skin patching of eroded or cracked areas
– Some repairs on concrete streets

The Westwood Neighborhood Council has asked us to submit suggested locations in our neighborhood for small street repairs. The city will only send the SAR truck to a total of 15 locations in the entire Westwood Neighborhood Council area, so Holmby Westwood will only see a handful of repairs.

If you are aware of any spots in our neighborhood that would be particularly good candidates for this program, please send requests to Dana at hwpoa@aol.com no later than Tuesday, January 30.  Please only send street repair requests, not sidewalks or curbs.

4.  SPEEDING THROUGH STOP SIGNS

A homeowner reported that last Saturday morning around 9:05 AM, a black convertible Bentley, driven by a young man in his late teens or early 20s, endangered the lives of several pedestrians, including a baby in a stroller.  The driver was headed east on Wyton at Loring and sped straight through the intersection without stopping at the stop sign while several pedestrians were just steps away.

Please SLOW DOWN and obey all stop signs.  Let’s keep our neighborhood safe!

5.  LAWN BOWLING AT HOLMBY PARK

You are invited to learn how to bowl at the Holmby Park Lawn Bowling Club!  This invitation is good for any Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday – see flyer for details.  For more information, please visit: www.losangeleslawnbowling.com

6.  NEW DOG PARK AT WESTWOOD REC. CENTER

There is now a dogs off the leash Dog Park at the Westwood Recreation Center. It’s the safe and legal way to let your dog off the their leash to play with other dogs. The UCLA Daily Bruin has created a video that shows the new dog-friendly venue:

7.  METRO PURPLE LINE EXTENSION

The long-awaited Metro Purple Line Subway Extension is now under construction.

One of Metro’s priority projects, the Purple Line Extension is a critically important rail project that will provide a high-capacity, high-speed and, dependable alternative for commuters to travel between downtown Los Angeles, the Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills and Westwood, where stations will be near UCLA and the VA Hospital.  Travel time between downtown Los Angeles and Westwood is expected to be about 25 minutes.

The project is being built in three sections. The first section between Wilshire/Western and Wilshire/La Cienega is now under construction and is scheduled for completion in 2023.

Section 2 of the Purple Line Extension Project will extend the subway to downtown Beverly Hills and Century City. Section 2 is currently in pre-construction and will begin construction later this year. Sections 1 and 2 are funded primarily by Measure R — the sales tax Los Angeles County voters approved in 2008 — and with a pair of federal grants.

Section 3 will then extend the project to two stations in Westwood. The passage of the Measure M sales tax ballot measure by county voters in 2016 will allow this section to be accelerated. Pre-construction activities on this section will begin in Spring 2018. Metro is currently working to secure the federal funds for Section 3.

Learn more and sign up to receive construction updates, by visiting: www.metro.net/projects/westside

If you decide to install a Ring.com doorbell, Hello Tech will send a technician to install your equipment. Some are better than others when installing such equipment in older homes with lath and plaster walls. Residents may need to buy WIFI mesh extenders to boost their WIFI so cameras can send a signal to cell phones. Hello Tech’s technician, Barkev Tashchyan, is very knowledgeable and creative in installing equipment in older homes. You may reach him directly at 323-251-0693.

1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

A homeowner on the 200 block of Loring reported an attempted break-in on the evening of Wednesday, 1/17.  At approximately 8:45 PM, the homeowner heard a loud noise at the back of the house.  The homeowner went to investigate but did not see anything.  The next morning he discovered that a glass panel on a French door leading from the bedroom to the back yard had been smashed (though the glass was shatterproof).  He likely scared away the suspect when he went to investigate the loud noise and turned on a light.

TRAIL HEAD CRIME
Do you hike in the local hills?  West L.A. Detectives have noticed a considerable uptick in trail-head car break-ins.  Criminals are targeting trail-heads, knowing that hikers often leave wallets, phones and such in their unattended cars.  Some hikers even leave their key fobs on top of one of the vehicle’s tires, making it even easier for criminals to break in.  Please be careful with your property and take appropriate precautions if you leave your car near a trail-head.

The ten-week academy is designed to give community members an overview of the Los Angeles Police Department’s policies and procedures. The curriculum and teaching methods are similar to the traditional law enforcement academy.

Through the Community Police Academy, enrolled students will be encouraged to build a lasting partnership with the Department, with the ultimate goal of reducing crime and improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods.

1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

A resident reported that an unlocked car was broken into on the 10700 block of Lindbrook Dr. Friday night. They went through everything but nothing was taken.

BURGLARY (entry of structure w/intent to commit theft or a felony)
Incident #: 180804304
800 BLOCK GLENMONT AV  |  1/6/2018 @ 7:00 PM

HOME INVASION ON LINDBROOK
On 12/30/17, at 4:30 am, the resident was in the living room watching television when they observed a male, white, 6′, 250 lbs, in his 50’s, standing in the kitchen going through a purse on the countertop. The resident hid and called police. The suspect was gone on arrival. The Investigation revealed that the suspect had entered through one of several unsecured/unlocked side doors in the kitchen area of the home. The suspect went through a purse that was visibly and sitting on a countertop. After removing money from the purse, the suspect fled from the location.

RIDE SHARING  & BURGLARIES
Do you use Uber, Lyft or other services to go to the airport?  It may be possible, as yet unverified, that ride share drivers could be sharing passenger information with potential burglars.  This information may include which of their passengers left with suitcases to the airport or talked about going out of town and for how long; as well as from what address.  Please be advised not to share your trip information with the driver. In fact, implying that you have a family member staying home or house-sitting may not be a bad move.

2.  CITYWIDE EMERGENCY INFORMATION

Are you prepared for wet winter weather in LA? Here are some resources to assist you.  If you have any questions, please dial 3-1-1 or use the MyLA311 app. Be safe, stay dry, and capture some rainwater!

–  LA Sanitation wet weather prep:    www.lacitysan.org/wetweather

–  Citywide information:  www.emergency.lacity.org/blog/wet-winter-weather-how-survive-las-rainy-season

–  To receive emergency alerts: text READY to 888-777 or visit www.emergency.lacity.org/notifyla

–  If the City issues any evacuation notices, LAFD will post on Twitter, Facebook, and their website www.lafd.org/alerts. ReadyLA will also provide notifications on Twitter.

–  If you or someone you know needs overnight shelter from the storms, LAHSA’s Winter Shelters are open 12/1-3/31. Go to www.lahsa.org/winter-shelter for shelter locations and information on free transportation to get there.

–  Sand and sandbags are available across the City, FREE to residents. You can view a list of locations at www.lafd.org/news/lafd-provides-sandbags-homeowners-2

3.  WESTWOOD VILLAGE POST OFFICE – NOW OPEN

Earlier this week was the first day of business for full retail services at the Village Post Office.  Well, almost.  Due to a computer problem, they could not sell stamps.  We are not sure if this problem has been fixed.  The post office is located at:

U.S. Post Office
1001 Gayley Avenue, Suite 105
(at the corner of Weyburn, across from Whole Foods)

Retail hours have not yet been posted but are presumably typical hours for other post offices.  We will confirm more details when we receive them.

4.  SHOP LOCAL – WESTWOOD VILLAGE

We want to encourage neighbors to Shop Local.  Westwood Village has many new businesses and outstanding old favorites in the Village.  We encourage you to try them and thought we would help by spotlighting who’s there and what they are doing.  We welcome you to send us your own hot tip on what is a “must do” in Westwood Village.

One of the newest shops is the Ministry of Coffee, the coffee and espresso bar created by ex-pat Aussies, just south of Trader Joe’s.  Their famous flat-white, espresso and simple but satisfying lunch items, and charming service are drawing folks from all over the Westside.  If you haven’t yet tried it, go in for a g’day cup of coffee and enjoy yourselves in a comfortable and casual space.

5.  NATIONAL BLOOD SHORTAGE – DONATIONS NEEDED

The American Red Cross Greater Los Angeles Region put out an emergency call Monday for eligible blood and platelet donors of all blood types to help address a nationwide winter blood donation shortage.

FIND A BLOOD DRIVE – CLICK HERE

Severe winter weather has had a tremendous impact on blood donations. More than 150 blood drives have already been canceled in January due to snowstorms and frigid temperatures, causing more than 5,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected, the Red Cross reported. Further adding to the diminishing supply, holiday schedules, winter weather and an active cold and flu season collectively contributed to more than 28,000 fewer donations than what was needed in November and December.

Eligible individuals are urged to schedule a blood or platelet donation by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling (800) 733-2767. Donors can help even more people by inviting a family member, friend or co-worker to donate, too.

6.  UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

Paderewski and World Politics Lecture – Saturday, January 13, at 3:00 PM at the Palms-Rancho Branch of the LA Public Library (2920 Overland Ave.)  Those of you who have attended the Los Angeles Musical Salon Dinner-Concerts over the past ten years are sure to recall Marek Zebrowski, pianist, composer and audience member, who has graced many of our events with his talent, charm and great knowledge. Marek is giving a fascinating, FREE, lecture with plenty of visuals about virtuoso pianist (the “rock star” of his era) Ignacy Jan Paderewski and his less-known role in early 20th century world politics.

Car Seat Safety Event – Sunday, January 21 at Century West Car Wash (9500 Pico Blvd.).  Assemblymember Richard Bloom and City Councilmember Paul Koretz are hosting a car seat safety event to have your child safety seat inspected by certified technicians representing the California Highway Patrol. This free event is open to all ages and will include Child ID Kits with fingerprints and a photograph – one of the most important tools used by authorities to aid in the recovery of a missing person.  Advance reservations for car seat inspections are highly recommended.  To make a reservation, please click here:

BURGLARY FROM VEHICLE
Incident #: 170820028
10800 BLOCK LINDBROOK DR  |  12/18/2017 @ 5:00 PM

HOLIDAY SAFETY
With the holidays fast approaching, and on any other given day, the LASD would like to remind the various communities we serve to remain vigilant and help us protect your homes and that of your neighbors, by following these burglary prevention tips:

  • Homeowners should make an attempt to give the impression someone is home at all times, which would include leaving a car in driveway, leaving lights on in and around the home at night.
  • Noise inside the house (leave TV or radio on) to give the impression someone is home.
  • Commercial security services that have become popular, inexpensive and easy to use, including but not limited to video recording devices.
  • Use pets such a dog for property protection and deterrence.
  • Most importantly, making contact with neighbors and looking out for one another’s homes.
  • We don’t want our residents to be paranoid; however, they should appropriately suspicious of unusual vehicles or persons slowly traversing through their neighborhood.
  • We encourage residents to ALWAYS and IMMEDIATELY contact law enforcement when they believe they are seeing something suspicious in the neighborhood.
  • Law enforcement recognizes the value of social media, but information should not just be posted on social media without also sharing with such information with local law enforcement agencies.

Have a safe and happy Holidays!

2.  HOLIDAY GARBAGE COLLECTION

Due to the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, our offices will be closed and there will be no collection service on Monday, December 25 and Monday, January 1.

Throughout both weeks, our collection schedule will be postponed by one day. If your normal collection day is Monday, your bins will be serviced Tuesday. Tuesday collections will happen Wednesday, Friday collections will happen Saturday. On Monday, January 8, we will go back to the regular schedule

3.  CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING

LA Sanitation has curbside collection for Christmas trees to make it convenient to properly and safely recycle your tree. There are several options.

If your Christmas tree is too big to cut and place inside the green waste bin, simply place the tree next to your green waste bin on collection day.

How to Recycle your Christmas tree and put in the green bin:

  1.  REMOVE all ornaments, decorations, tinsels and stand from the tree.
  2.  CUT the tree into pieces, if needed, to fit into green bin.
  3.  PLACE the tree pieces inside the green bin and put out for regular pick-up on collection day.

*Flock or artificial trees can’t be recycled, place them in the black container.

Collected Christmas trees will be recycled into compost and mulch that is available to residents for free.

Tree safety tips

  • Buy a freshly cut tree.
  • Keep the tree no less than three feet from heat sources.
  • Water the tree on a daily basis.
  • Remove the tree from your home after Christmas or once it becomes dry.

In addition, holiday wrapping paper, cartons, cardboard, Styrofoam® and other expanded polystyrene products, plastics and gift boxes are also recyclable and should be placed in the blue bin. However, it is illegal to place household hazardous waste, such as electronics (i.e. televisions and computers) and batteries into the collection bins. Please take those items to one of seven S.A.F.E. Centers for safe disposal and recycling.

4.  SKIRBALL FIRE UPDATE

The following is from Capt. Valadez at Fire Station #71 (at Sunset/Beverly Glen):

E-71 was one of the first Engine companies on the Skirball fire. We were on Casiano Road for 32 hours. Out of about a dozen houses or more we only lost 2, one because the trees were right to the back of the house. E-71 along with 2 other Engines saved many houses. When we arrived both sides of the street had fire and the canyons below on both sides were going into the brush, trees, cars and houses.

For more information, please take a look at the following article. Scroll through the photos at the top and bottom of the article to see many of our FS 71 crew members.

1.  FIRE STATIONS #71 AND #37 – THANK YOU!!

To our firefighters at Stations # 71 and # 37,

On behalf of our Board of Directors and the members of Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association, I would like to offer our gratitude to each of you for the fantastic job you did to save our adjacent communities in the recent fires. We can’t begin to tell you how very appreciative we are. You are the best first responders any community could have and we are so grateful for your service.

We thank you, and wish you a wonderful holiday season!!

Sandy Brown
President, Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association

2.  FIRE SAFETY

This week’s nearby fires should be a wake-up call. Even though Holmby Westwood is not in a canyon or hillside area, we’re not immune from having a fire spread through our neighborhood during periods of low humidity and windy conditions.

Two months ago, a large fire occurred in a house on Beverly Glen Blvd. it is suspected that the fire was electrical and started in a walk-in closet before spreading to the attic. 63 firefighters from four stations battled the blaze from 10:0 PM to 4:00 AM. After initially putting out the fire in one hour, the fire started again.

Fortunately, there wasn’t much breeze that evening, but surrounding homes over a block away were filled with smoke. If we’d had high winds that night, surrounding homes and trees could easily have ignited from embers, which can travel a mile from a fire. Many fires spread to nearby homes by flying embers entering attic vents.

This is an LAFD reminder for all residents to have a “firewise” home. For additional information regarding ways to make your home safe as well as information regarding planning for evacuation, please click here:

FIRE SAFETY NOTE

Be safe and help to keep Holmby Westwood safe

3.  EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS

During an emergency, there are several ways to receive emergency notifications:

NotifyLA
NotifyLA is the City of Los Angeles’ official mass notification system used to send voice messages, text messages and email messages to residents and businesses during times of emergencies and disasters.

Because NotifyLA uses the 911 database, only land-line numbers are automatically included in the system. In order to receive a notification via your cell phone, Voice over IP (VoIP) number or email, you must register those telephone numbers and/or e-mail address in NotifyLA.  To register these numbers, please click here:

http://emergency.lacity.org/notifyla

NIXLE
Nixle keeps you up-to-date with relevant information from your local public safety departments & schools.  Nixle sends alerts for severe weather, criminal activites, severe traffic, missing persons and local events.  To sign up, please click here:

http://www.nixle.com/

SMART PHONES & GOVERNMENT ALERTS
In addition, you may wish to double check that your smart phones are set to receive government alerts. On the iPhone, go to settings, then choose notifications, then scroll down to the bottom. Where it says “government alerts,” be sure that the toggle is green for “on.”

4.  SURVEY – METRO BIKE SHARE

Metro Bike Share wants your feedback whether you’ve ridden bike share or not.

1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

RAPE, FORCIBLE (any age, non consentual sexual intercourse)
Incident #: 170818976
SUNSET BL & MAPLETON AV  |  11/26/2017 @ 1:00 AM

On 11/25/17, at 10:30 pm, the victim attended a late night pool party with her friend at a residence located in the 100 block of S. Mapleton Drive.  The victim engaged in heavy drinking and became intoxicated.  When the victim went to use the bathroom, she was followed by another male party guest.  The victim was then sexually assaulted while in the bathroom.  Following the assault, the victim spent the night at the residence and left with her friend the following morning.  Later that night after returning home, the victim disclosed what had occurred to a family member who then transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.  The police were then notified.  There is no suspect description other than a Male, Black, no further description.

BURGLARY (entry of structure w/intent to commit theft or a felony)
Incident #: 170819032
900 BLOCK HILGARD AV  |  11/27/2017 @ 11:00 PM

“KNOCK KNOCK” SERIES BURGLARY ALERT
On Monday, November 20 in the late afternoon (around 4:00), there was a series of “knock knock” burglaries in the Westwood community south of Wilshire Blvd.  It is believed that the same suspects are responsible for an additional Residential Burglary in the Westwood Hills community as well (the area west of UCLA/Veteran).

The suspects are described as three Male, African Americans, medium build, early 20’s, wearing Gray or Black Hoodies.  The vehicle is a early 2000’s silver Mercedes sedan, possible C Class, with paper plates.

These incidents are being investigated by the West Los Angeles Burglary Detail.  Anyone with additional information or leads may contact Detective Greg Davis at 310-444-1522 or email at 31554@lapd.online.

The Los Angeles Police Department recommends the below tips to help secure your home and deter a Burglary.

  • If you are home when there is a knock at the door, make your presence known but do not open the door.
  • Install a video/audio doorbell system that will immediately detect, alert and notify you if there is activity at your front door.

2.  VANDALISM INCIDENT – SEEKING SUSPECTS

A homeowner on Westholme reported the following:

On Nov. 11 at around 4 pm, several kids (approximately age 14-15) , one tall and one shorter, coming from the street above our house (on Westholme) used skateboards and slid on my railing (and destroyed them). They escaped down the road.

On Nov. 18 they came again around 4 pm and further destroyed the railing. A neighbor tried to chase them out but they continued and said that they are from Colorado.

I would appreciate any help in detaining this kids or finding their parents to pay for the large damage.  If you recognize them, please contact me at warshel@usc.edu or contact the LAPD.  Thank you.

3.  SECURITY UPDATE AND SSA MEETING

In case you haven’t been following Crime Mapping updates (go to CrimeMapping.com to receive notices by e-mail), you may not be aware of the crime activity in Holmby Westwood and adjacent neighborhoods (19 crimes reported recently throughout the Westwood area and Westwood Village). Besides regularly occurring car break-ins, both north and south of Wilshire, there have been five residential burglaries early in the morning and in the evening when residents have been at home. This is a change from the typical late morning/early afternoon burglaries. A recent LA Times article reported that the LAPD was accused by one of its own officers of under reporting crime on the Westside in order not to alarm residents. The LAPD has not responded.

The safety of our residents is of prime concern, not just their material possessions, but also their physical safety should they confront a burglar who realizes residents will be able to identify him or her. The LAPD feels many burglaries on the Westside are committed by gang members as an initiation ritual.

On Thursday, December 7th, SSA Security will hold a security meeting for our community at Belmont Village, 10475 Wilshire Blvd. at 7:00 PM. SSA only hires off-duty and retired LAPD policemen who are able to make arrests and coordinate with local LAPD. They are not afraid to confront burglars at your home, and their response time average is under 5 minutes. SSA has dramatically reduced crime in Pacific Palisades.

If you are concerned about crime in Holmby Westwood, and want to know all your options, plan to attend this meeting. If you are unable to attend, you can call SSA for information: 818-773-5600.

Please note, HWPOA is not associated with SSA Security in any way and does not endorse or recommend any security company.

4.  HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

The following Holiday Safety Tips were compiled, in cooperation with the LAPD Crime Prevention Section, to contribute to the safety and security of people during the holiday season.

The holiday season is always a special time of year. It is also a time when busy people become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. We can never be too careful, too prepared or too aware. Please share this information with family, friends and neighbors. The Los Angeles Police Department wishes you a safe, happy and peaceful holiday season.

2.  SMALL CHILDREN WALKING BIG DOGS

A resident recently reported a concern regarding big dogs and small children.  It was reported that while the resident was walking their dog, they came across a young child walking a very large dog (probably a Rottweiler) that outweighed the child.  The child was having difficulty controlling the dog and the resident was concerned that the dog could get loose and approach her and her dog.

Please be sure that anyone who walks your dog is capable of controlling the dog should your dog become excited, aggressive or hyper.  Thank you.

It is never safe to leave packages by your front door.  Please have packages delivered with “signature required” or have them delivered to another location (such as a business office) where it can be handed to a person directly.

5.  EMERGENCY INFORMATION – BE PREPARED

Regarding medical emergencies:
Do you know which pharmacy you can go to in the middle of the night?  Would you know where to go if a family member broke an arm?

Plan Ahead
It is important that everyone find a pharmacy that is open 24/7 near you BEFORE an emergency arises. Just as important, please find an Urgent Care that is near you, that your insurance provides for, and the hours it is open. Many Urgent Care places are not open 24/7.
