1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

BURGLARY FROM VEHICLE
Incident #: 180806430
800 BLOCK WESTHOLME AV  |  2/21/2018 @ 11:30 PM

BURGLARY FROM VEHICLE
Incident #: 180806032
10600 BLOCK LINDBROOK DR  |  2/14/2018 @ 1:40 AM

A homeowner reported that earlier this week on Monday at 2:00 AM, a white car was parked behind their car and the suspects tried to break into the car. The doors were locked and the alarm went off.

Alarming New Trend – Door Checking
Recently, while door checking cars, suspects have also been “door checking” the doors to homes as well. In recent incidents the suspects have entered unlocked doors targeting purses, wallets, brief cases, keys, and small electronics that are typically left within close proximity to the door. Additionally, in incidents where the doors were locked but there was window glass as part of or adjacent to the doors with valuables visible inside, the suspects have smashed the window glass conducting a “smash and grab” of the same property left within reach just inside the door, all while residents are sleeping inside the home.

Daytime and Evening Trends continue: The “Knock Knock Burglary” series continues. The suspects typically knock or ring the doorbell to determine if anyone is home. When there is no answer, the suspects enter the side or rear of the residence and force entry typically by smashing the window or door glass to gain entry. Suspects are targeting the master bed and bath as well as other areas of the home and removing Jewelry, cash, small valuables and small electronics.

2.  HOLMBY PARK UPDATE

HWPOA has received several reports of people not following the rules at Holmby Park.  Dog owners regularly let their dogs run off-leash and scooters and skateboards are regularly used on the walking path.  Both of these issues are safety issues. HWPOA contacted the City of L.A. to request park rangers who will enforce the municipal code.  Unfortunately, we were told that due to a reduction in park ranger staff, there are no rangers assigned to parks (other than regional parks).

If you would like to report a problem at Holmby Park, you will need to contact the LAPD.  The non-emergency number is (877) 275-5273.

In addition, residents have noticed excessive trash on the parkway surrounding Holmby Park and across the street on the residential side.  HWPOA is trying to get the food trucks to encourage their customers to throw all trash in the cans provided nearby and to clean the area before they depart for the day.

3.  PREVIEW INCOMING MAIL – USPS INFORMED DELIVERY

Due to tampering at some outdoor postal mailboxes, mail theft is becoming more common.  Thefts include packages stolen from porches, payments with checks dropped in outdoor mailboxes being stolen and checks then being “washed” and made out to random individuals.

For those who have had trouble receiving mail, you can sign up for Informed Delivery by USPS .  This service allows you to digitally preview your mail and manage your packages scheduled to arrive.  Informed Delivery allows you to view greyscale images of the exterior, address side of letter-sized mailpieces and track packages as well.  With tax season upon us, this service is a good way to make sure you receive important documents with sensitive information.

4.  SAFEGUARD YOUR HOME FROM FIRE DANGER

The Los Angeles County Fire Department estimates that embers caused the ignition of over 50% of the homes that burned in recent wildfires. Carried by strong winds, embers fly through the air and rain down on vulnerable homes, miles ahead of flames. Once homes ignite they create intense heat and more embers that can ignite other nearby homes. This turns what would be a fast-moving fire into an inferno, putting neighborhoods at risk, as well as making it dangerous for vital first-responders to enter the area.

The University of Nevada has produced the Be Ember Aware brochure, which includes a simple checklist for reducing your home’s vulnerability to embers.

Tip: One of the most vulnerable spots are your vents, which can easily be protected by installing 1/8 inch mesh covering. Learn how here.

6.  PURPLE LINE EXTENSION GROUNDBREAKING

Metro joined local, state and federal officials today to break ground on Section 2 of the Metro Purple Line Extension Project that will add 2.6-miles of new subway service to downtown Beverly Hills and Century City.

Metro has begun moving underground water, gas, power and telecommunications lines to make way for future subway construction. The agency is also conducting potholing, geotechnical tests, traffic surveys and other preparatory work.

Major construction is slated to begin this spring when work crews create a launch area for a tunnel boring machine at the planned Century City/Constellation Station. Major work at the planned Wilshire/Rodeo Station in Beverly Hills is expected to begin at the end of this year or early 2019.

7.  UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

Europe in Four Themes: Animals – In collaboration with the Getty Center, UCLA Film & Television Archive and the UCLA Center for European and Russian Studies have partnered this year to present a festival of film and music that explores European culture, politics and society through the prism of four themes: Animals, Food, Music and Architecture/Landscape.  Throughout 2018, the Archive will devote weekends to works by European and Russian filmmakers that explore these themes in compelling ways.  A noted expert in a related field of study will be invited to respond during post-screening conversations.

We launch this initiative February 23-25 with three films centered around animals.  These screenings take place in conjunction with a lecture-concert at the Getty Center on Saturday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m.
