1.  HWPOA BOARD MEETING

Next Tuesday, Aug.12 at 8:00 PM, the HWPOA Board of Directors will hold it’s monthly meeting at Belmont Village (10475 Wilshire Blvd.).  Members of the community are welcome to attend, though space is limited.  Please let us know if you plan to attend, by emailing Dana at hwpoa@aol.com.

2.  WATER CONSERVATION

The City of Los Angeles has mandatory water restrictions due to the current drought.  Please note that all outdoor watering is prohibited from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., 7 days a week.  Please set your sprinklers to water your lawns either in the early morning or late afternoon/evening.  This will cut down on water usage as less water evaporates during these hours.

5.  LAPD FRAUD/SCAM ALERT

BEWARE OF SCAMS USING GREENDOT MONEYPAK

People are losing thousands of dollars in a phone scam involving GreenDot MoneyPak.

How the scam works:
These crimes are usually perpetrated via telephone. Scammers represent themselves as bill collectors for utilities (predominantly DWP, but also as collectors for the IRS, citations, etc.) and request that the victim purchase a pre-paid re-loadable debit card (Green Dot/Money Pak, but also Visa, MasterCard, Vanilla Card, etc.) for the specific amount of the bill charge and threaten that the victim’s utilities will be shut off immediately, or the citation will go to warrant, etc., if the victim does not do so.

The victim is then instructed to call the scammer back with the PIN (account number) to that card. Once the scammer has the PIN, he is able to transfer the funds to any other credit card – essentially a convenient and untraceable method of transferring money. The victim is left no recourse.

6.  THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON’T TELL YOU

We will be posting a few of these items every week in the Holmby News. These insights into the way burglars “think” could help save your home from being burglarized:

1.   Do you really think I won’t look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.

2.  Here’s a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids’ rooms.

3.  You’re right: I won’t have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it’s not bolted down, I’ll take it with me.

4.  A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you’re reluctant to leave your TV on while you’re out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television.  (Find it at http://www.faketv.com/)

5.  Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.

6.  The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.

7.  HWPOA COMMUNICATION AND AD POLICY

Please direct all comments, questions or issues regarding the Holmby News to hwpoa@aol.com

Ads for plumbers, housekeepers, garage sales, etc. will be posted in the weekly News. Emergency situations such as coyote sightings, lost and found pets, traffic alerts and similar situations will continue to be published during the week as received.

When placing an ad, please send to hwpoa@aol.com for the Holmby News moderator to review.  Responses to ads should be directed to the ad placer, not to HWPOA.

8.  RESIDENT ADS

Looking to Improve Outdoor Landscaping

We are looking to upgrade the landscaping in our front and back yard. We have a “mow, blow and go” gardener, but need someone with experience to select new plants, improve the layout and execute the project. Please contact me if you have a referral. Thank you!
