1.  SEEKING NEW HWPOA BOARD MEMBERS

Join the Board of Directors
of
Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association

The HWPOA Board is seeking Holmby Westwood residents to volunteer to serve as a Director for 1 year. We usually meet on the second Tuesday of every month except for August and December. We ask only that you be a financially current member of the Association for the past 2 years and have an interest in maintaining and improving the quality of life we have all come to know and enjoy.

You will work with many neighbors who serve on the Board, some who have served for many years. This is a way to help your community, to work with city officials and departments, to plan events, and to support the protections in place today.

The Holmby Westwood community is over 80 years old and preservation, livability, and schools are key to its residential value. Serving on our Board of Directors is a way to safeguard one of the largest investments you will make in your lifetime.

We want the next generation to be able to carry on what we have fought to protect for these many years. Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association is a highly respected association throughout the city and, with your involvement, we hope that will continue indefinitely.

Our meetings are held at Belmont Village, Wilshire at Warner Ave., 8–9:30 PM. Our committees include: Security, Traffic, Holmby Park, Architectural Supervising Committee, 4th of July event, Emergency Preparedness, Filming (in the neighborhood), WLAPD liaison and more.

Please, contact Dana Glenn, our Office Manager, and let her know that you want to join our Board. You will have an extremely worthwhile experience while giving back to a community that has remained highly desirable for many years. That did not happen accidentally. It happened with a commitment from hundreds of our neighbors over 80 years!

Send an email to hwpoa@aol.com or call (310) 470-1785 to contact Dana. The deadline for submissions is April 10. We look forward to hearing from you!!

Many thanks,
Your HWPOA Board of Directors

2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

Two different residents on the 800 block of Malcolm reported the following events:

(1) A homeowner reported that her car was broken in to last week, sometime between 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 30 and 10:00 AM on Friday, March 31.  The car was locked and parked in the driveway.  The suspects rummaged through the car and stole a change purse.

(2) On Tuesday, April 4 at 8:15 pm, a woman rang a homeowner’s doorbell and told her that she had a beautiful rose bush and wanted to know what type of roses they were. The homeowner told her that they didn’t have a rose bush and the woman said it must be my next door neighbor’s (they do have a rose bush, which is not easily seen from the street). When she walked away the homeowner saw that she had a flashlight. This may have been a genuine question, but it also may have been a potential “knock knock” burglary where the criminals knock on the door to see if anyone is home before they break in.

LAPD CRIME REPORT:

THEFT-GRAND (plain theft-grand) $950.01 & over
Incident #: 170807937
10700 BLOCK LE CONTE AV  |  3/27/2017 @ 7:30 AM

BURGLARY (entry of structure w/intent to commit theft or a felony)
Incident #: 170808309
1000 BLOCK SELBY AV  |  3/29/2017 @ 3:00 PM

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY ALERT
Residential Burglaries continue to be trending throughout the region and are the crime of choice among the criminal gang rings. If you have been paying any attention to the recent news, the same type of MO and crime is occurring across Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Also making news headlines recently have been the reports of a half dozen or more celebrity or sports figures that have fallen victim to these same crimes.

Typically there are two areas that burglars will approach prior to breaking into a home. First, the front door to determine if anyone is home. Secondly, they will typically enter a side or rear gate and yard to access the back to gain or force entry into the home.

As a result I am recommending motion sensor cameras that will immediately detect an intruder entering these zones and provide immediate notification on your smart phone. In other words, your first alert will be a suspicious individual approaching your front door. The second will be receiving an alert and images of intruders entering your side/rear yard. It is now time to call 911.

If an individual is able to access any critical parts of your property without immediate detection and notification to you, your property is vulnerable.

Please take a moment to view this news story and video which was released recently: http://abc7.com/uncategorized/councilman-calls-for-$50k-reward-in-knock-knock-burglaries/1839678/

You may access crime mapping at www.crimemapping.com to review recent crimes in your area. Sign up to receive alerts when crime is reported in your neighborhood.

3.  STOLEN ITEMS – ARE THEY YOURS?

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

Police are trying to reunite burglary victims and their possessions following a raid on an LA business that “received stolen property.”

Police in Los Angeles Wednesday sought victims whose stolen property was recovered in August at a business raided by investigators.  The stolen items include hundreds of pieces of jewelry, high-value purses, collectible coins and sunglasses, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The items were recovered on Aug. 18, when police served a search warrant at a Los Angeles business “that was receiving stolen property,” according to an LAPD statement.  “Two victims of residential burglaries and one victim of a commercial burglary have positively identified their property,” police said. “The victims are located in the cities of Redondo Beach, Temple City and Valencia.”

Charges are pending against the owner of the raided business, which wasn’t identified, according to the LAPD.

Anyone who was a victim of a burglary between Jan. 1, 2016 and Aug. 17, 2016 is urged to check with Detective Marc Zavala at (818) 832-7510 or Detective Jeannette Santos at (818) 832-7511 after viewing images of stolen items at http://ow.ly/PYYB30aC22W.

4.  IN CASE OF EMERGENCY – CALL 911, NOT FIRE STATION

I have been asked by the firefighters at Station # 71 to please remind our residents that should an emergency arise that requires emergency service, please DO NOT CALL THE FIRE STATION directly.  You will be told to hang up and call 911.  Our station has been receiving calls because neighbors believe they will get faster emergency service when, in fact, it will take longer.  It is imperative that you always call 911.

Thank you,
Sandy Brown

5.  CITY OF L.A. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SURVEY

Concerned about emergencies and disasters? The City of Los Angeles wants to hear from you!

FROM: Kate Hutton, Public Information Officer, Los Angeles Emergency Management Department

The City of Los Angeles is updating its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) to prepare for disasters and needs public input. The LHMP is a plan to implement actions to reduce injuries and losses from disasters and ensure that the critical services and facilities of the City will continue to function after a disaster. Los Angeles has about 284 sunny days per year, but we do face the potential for earthquakes, floods, fires, hazardous materials incidents, power outages, infrastructure failure, transportation accidents, or even terrorism.

Angelenos know LA better than anyone else, so we want to hear from you. We’ve developed a survey for residents, business owners, and City employees to share what concerns them the most about potential disasters. Take this opportunity to let us know what concerns you before, during, or after a disaster!

Take the survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CityofLosAngelesLHMPSurvey

6.  MULHOLLAND DRIVE – ROAD WORK UPDATE

SoCal Gas Company will continue the new meter project on Mulholland Drive until Friday April 21, 2017. We were notified that the CPUC did not clear all the inspections and asked that other gas meters be located off the medium pressure main along Mulholland Drive.

SoCal Gas obtained an approval to continue to work. Once the project is completed and all clearances have been made, I will then be able to notify Bureau of Street Services regarding the resurfacing project. We apologize for any inconveniences this has caused.

Thank you all for your attention. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me at 818-971-3088.

CD5 Valley Director

8.  VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – WESTWOOD LIBRARY BOOK SALES

Friends of Westwood Library Needs Your Help!  For years the Friends of Westwood Library have held used-book sales every three months at our Westwood Branch library. These sales are popular community events which raise money to buy additional books for the Branch and to increase the number of programs it offers.

The Friends are seeking volunteers to assist our book sale team. If you are organized, enjoy sorting books, and can supervise and work with others, this is a wonderful opportunity to assist us. The minimum time commitment: one day (Friday or Saturday) four times a year, about four hours each day.

Compensation: hanging out with bibliophiles; seeing joy in the faces of children buying books. For more information, get in touch with Teresa Castelli at castellifowl@gmail.com.
