1.  HALLOWEEN SAFETY

In order to assist the Los Angeles community in enjoying this fun-filled holiday as safely as possible, the Los Angeles Police Department has compiled a list of Halloween safety tips for children and their parents.

2.  LAPD ALERT – WESTWOOD STREET ROBBERIES

From the LAPD:

On 10/26/16, between 7:30 PM and 9:00 PM, a series of street robberies occurred in the Westwood and south of Westwood neighborhoods. The suspects primarily targeted pedestrians walking on the sidewalk. The suspect described as a male Black, 20 to 30 years old, wearing a dark hoodie, dark pants, approached the victims on foot displaying a handgun, taking cellular telephones from the victims. In most cases, the suspect fled to a waiting vehicle described as a black 4 door sedan with a get away driver inside.

This is an active on-going investigation and all leads are being investigated and pursued.

  • 10/26/16, 8:10 PM Rochester Ave/Manning Ave.
  • 10/26/16, 8:25 PM 2300 block Bentley Avenue.
  • 10/26/16, 8:30 PM 1700 block Malcolm Avenue.
  • 10/26/16, 8:40 PM 900 block Manning Avenue.

The Los Angeles Police Department recommends the following prevention tips:

  • Stay alert and always remain aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid walking alone at night and keep to well lighted, populated areas.
  • No property is worth fighting over-remain calm, hand over property, and obtain as many details as possible. Call 911 as soon as possible.

3.  BB GUN ALERT

A homeowner reported that a car was shot and damaged from a BB gun in the neighborhood.  Thankfully, no one was injured but the car window needed to be replaced.

If you own a BB gun or airsoft gun, please be responsible and use with extreme caution, only as allowed by law.

4.  HWPOA BOARD MEETING

On Monday, November 7 at 8:00 PM, the HWPOA Board of Directors will hold its monthly meeting at Belmont Village, 10475 Wilshire Blvd. The meeting was moved from the regular Tuesday evening due to Election Day.  Members of the community are welcome to attend, though space is limited. 5.  WESTWOOD LIBRARY – NOVEMBER EVENTS

There is a lot planned at the Westwood Library for the month of November.  The schedule includes lectures, meditation, adult coloring, reading clubs, arts & crafts and much more.  There are events and activities for adults, seniors, teens and children.

6.  MOVIE PREMIERES – STREET CLOSURES

Almost Christmas – Thursday, November 3, 2016
Universal will be holding the Premiere of “Almost Christmas”, at 7:30 PM on Thursday, November 3rd. 2016 at the Regency Village Theater, located at 961 Broxton Avenue in Westwood.

Arrival – Sunday, November 6, 2016
Paramount will be holding the Premiere of “Arrival”, at 6:00 PM on Sunday, November 6th. 2016 at the Regency Village Theater, located at 961 Broxton Avenue in Westwood.

For both events, there will be various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding either of these events, feel free to contact Michelle Dennis 310- 848-1137.

7.  UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

Westwood Rec. Halloween Carnival – Saturday, Oct. 29 from 11AM to 7PM at Westwood Rec. Center.  Jumpers, carnival games, laser tag, food trucks, costume contest, arts and crafts and more!  Wristbands may be purchased online now or on the day of the event if space is still available.  For more information, please click here and scroll to page 4:  Westwood Rec. Warner Ave. School “Halloween Haunt” – Sunday, October 30th from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM. The Warner Halloween Haunt is a parent-run community celebration. The event includes food, games, crafts, and more! Ads for plumbers, housekeepers, garage sales, etc. will be posted in the weekly News. Emergency situations such as coyote sightings, lost and found pets, traffic alerts and similar situations will continue to be published during the week as received.

9.  RESIDENT ADS

GROUP FOR PEOPLE WITH A CHRONIC LUNG CONDITION

I host a meeting every other month for people with chronic lung conditions other than TB or cancer. It’s a very informal support and information group, free of charge, that has been ongoing for about 15 years.

We are affiliated with a national non-profit organization, NTM Info & Research (NTMir), formed on behalf of patients with pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease for the purpose of patient support, medical education, and research. The organization comprises patients, physicians and other medical practitioners, and researchers.

Our group is open to all and the next meeting will be on Monday, October 31, at 1:30 p.m. at my house, 641 Warner Avenue, in Westwood. Please feel free to contact me for more information. I look forward to speaking with you and meeting you!
