The April HWPOA Board meeting has been canceled.  The Annual Membership meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9 and the next Board meeting will be on June 13.

The HWPOA Board is seeking Holmby Westwood residents to volunteer to serve as a Director for 1 year. We usually meet on the second Tuesday of every month except for August and December. We ask only that you be a financially current member of the Association for the past 2 years and have an interest in maintaining and improving the quality of life we have all come to know and enjoy.

You will work with many neighbors who serve on the Board, some who have served for many years. This is a way to help your community, to work with city officials and departments, to plan events, and to support the protections in place today.

The Holmby Westwood community is over 80 years old and preservation, livability, and schools are key to its residential value. Serving on our Board of Directors is a way to safeguard one of the largest investments you will make in your lifetime.

We want the next generation to be able to carry on what we have fought to protect for these many years. Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association is a highly respected association throughout the city and, with your involvement, we hope that will continue indefinitely.

Our meetings are held at Belmont Village, Wilshire at Warner Ave., 8–9:30 PM. Our committees include: Security, Traffic, Holmby Park, Architectural Supervising Committee, 4th of July event, Emergency Preparedness, Filming (in the neighborhood), WLAPD liaison and more.

3.  COMMUNITY SECURITY MEETING

Mark your calendars now for a Community Security Meeting on Wednesday, April 12th from 7:00 – 9:00 PM in Fellowship Hall on the second floor of Westwood United Methodist Church (northeast corner of Wilshire Blvd. and Warner Ave.). Free parking is located next door at Belmont Village Senior Living. Enter the courtyard just west of the church and proceed to the stairs just inside the rear building.

SSA Security Group (Patrol and response) and Moore Protection (Monitoring) have been invited to make a presentation to the community by some of our HW neighbors who were previous clients in Pacific Palisades.  HWPOA is not sponsoring this event. Invitations and information were mailed earlier this week.

4.  NEW USPS SERVICE – INFORMED DELIVERY

The USPS has a new service available called Informed Delivery. If you sign up, you can see a scan of all of your incoming mail that is expected to be delivered. That way, once your mail is delivered later in the day, you know if anything has been lost/stolen.

Users will have the option of getting an email with photos of the front of card- and letter-size mail pieces that are due to arrive that day, or a day or two later.

It might also be handy if you are expecting something important, and don’t want to have to wait until you get home to find out if the item has arrived or not.

6.  EARTH DAY STATE PARK CLEAN-UP – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Calling all nature lovers!  Volunteers are needed at 36 California state parks for the 19th Annual California State Parks Foundation Earth Day Restoration & Cleanup. The statewide event is planned for 9 am to 1 pm on Earth Day (April 22).

Earth Day event is a great opportunity for residents of the Golden State to do something meaningful for their communities, as well as the planet, by helping improve their local state parks.

Trail and road repair, campground improvements, fence and boardwalk building, tree planting, and wildlife habitat restoration are just some of the projects planned for Earth Day.

These could be used either all on April 8, or on three different occasions. This is a healthy, fun activity for all ages.

Santa Monica Oceanaires (Barbershop Chorus) Spring Show – Saturday, April 8 at 2:00 PM at Paul Revere Middle School at Sunset and Allenford Ave.  The Oceanaires, featuring Holmby Westwood resident, Richard Keagy, will present their Spring Show “The Love Boat”. The show will take about 2 hour plus and will include many songs you know as well as some barbershop songs that are classics.

We asked 86 burglars how they broke into homes

What burglars said were the biggest deterrents, what didn’t stop them and how you can protect your home.

We did too. So KGW’s investigative team sent letters to 86 inmates currently serving time for burglary in the Oregon Department of Corrections.  The inmates were asked to respond anonymously to 17 questions detailing how they broke in, when the crime occurred and what they were looking for.

6.  CURB PAINTING CONCERNS

A homeowner recently had a negative encounter with a curb painter:

The curb painters came to my house and spoke with my nanny and was extremely rude.  I went out to confront him and his response was “I am not here to speak with your maid.  I painted your curb and wanted to get paid.”  He came to the house twice.  He called her a liar.  He cursed at me.  This is not someone that we should be supporting.

Curb painters are supposed to get a permit from the city, but there are very few rules or regulations otherwise.  Please be cautious and use discretion when working with them.

1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

Residents have reported the following incidents:

(1) On Saturday, March 11 a home on the 200 block of South Beverly Glen Blvd. was burglarized.  The homeowners left their house at 7 PM and shortly afterwards their daughter heard noise by side of house which she thought was neighbor.  It is now clear that what she heard was perpetrators moving a ladder (which had been left on the side of the house by the gardeners) outside her window.  Most likely, the perpetrators climbed up outside daughter’s  window (thus explaining noise she heard and is  where ladder was found), saw her, then waited until she left around 7:30 and broke in.  She noticed a white pick up truck and another car across the street when she left; footage taken from a neighbor’s surveillance camera shows a white pickup truck on the street at 7:17 PM.

(2) On Monday, March 13, also on the 200 block of Beverly Glen Blvd., a  housekeeper heard noise between 1 and 1:30 a.m., alerted the homeowner, who threw on lights, and perpetrators fled.  A ladder (belonging to the homeowners, in their backyard), was found up against house.

2.  L.A. MARATHON – STREET CLOSURES THIS SUNDAY

Backstage at the Geffen is the Geffen’s largest fundraiser of the year.

  • Le Conte Ave will be closed to through traffic from Sunday, March 19 at 6am- Monday, March 20- at 5am.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be rerouted, for safety, at key event points.
  • The Ralph’s/Target loading zone will be open and Cars will be allowed to go  into and out of The Ralph’s parking lot on the South side of Le Conte when headed West.

Wednesday, March 22, 2017
Lionsgate will be holding the Premiere of “Power Rangers”, at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at the Regency Village Theaters, located at 961 Broxton Avenue in Westwood.  There will be various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue.

4.  MULHOLLAND DRIVE – ROAD WORK UPDATE

SoCal Gas Company is currently installing a new gas meter beneath Mulholland Drive (14430 Mulholland Drive) between Nicada Drive and Beverly Glen Boulevard. The project requires a two-foot trench for both the north and south side of Mulholland Drive. Work will continue between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m until Friday March 31, 2017. The company feels they will be over before then but want to give themselves some more time. They encountered some solid rock on some portions which required considerable hand work, which has delayed the project.

To help you navigate around the work, flagmen will be directing traffic. The message boards will remind on both ends of Mulholland Drive. Please use Nicada Drive as an alternate route. As always, any emergency response vehicles will be given full access.

5.  LAWN BOWLING AT HOLMBY PARK

6.  SSA SECURITY GROUP & MOORE PROTECTION

As you may know, crime is up all over Los Angeles. We have had a number of break-ins in Holmby Westwood during both daytime and evening hours, including two break-ins when residents were home in the evening. This is very concerning. Two security companies (a patrol company and a monitoring company that work together in Pacific Palisades, Hancock Park, Windsor Square and part of Brentwood) made a presentation to some of our residents a couple of months ago. They need 130 homes to sign up in order to place a 24 hour car in our community and already have 80 homes signed up. Only off duty and retired police are hired for patrol, and their response time is generally less than 5 minutes and usually 2-3 minutes.

7.  NEW CHIEF OF POLICE AT UCLA

Earlier this week, Tony Lee took the oath of office as UCLA’s new Chief of UCPD.  HWPOA’s President Sandy Brown, who was part of the interview process for the new chief, attended the ceremony.

“Tony brings to UCLA a demonstrated background of strong public safety experience and a collaborative leadership style,” said administrative vice chancellor Michael Beck in a press release.

Lee has worked in the BHPD for 26 years, where he has served as acting chief of police, a lieutenant in the intelligence unit and an incident commander for events. He also oversaw the administration, field services and investigations departments.  Lee also trained at the FBI National Academy and the Senior Management Institute for Police, among other programs.

HEROES FROM THE BIGG CHILL – THANK YOU!

Last Saturday evening (3-11-17), I was the recipient of the most wonderful random act of kindness.

Although I was able to momentarily thank my kindness-purveyors, I was so surprised that I didn’t think to get their names so that I could thank them again, more graciously.

I’m hoping that by telling my story here, perhaps these lovely folks are not strangers at all but are, in fact, my HWPOA neighbors.

After a movie & a Bigg Chill yogurt with my cousin, as I drove the bend from Hilgard onto my street, Wyton, I noticed a white SUV parked nearby with the headlights on.

Pulling into my driveway, the woman from the SUV surprised me by asking “Are you Carole?”  Behind her, I assumed, were her husband (still happilly enjoying what I now realize was his own Bigg Chill yogurt cup) & their daughter.  She told me they’d found my wallet & that they’d already tucked it into my mailbox.  I didn’t even know then that I’d dropped it upon leaving the yogurt shop.  They’d apparently found my address on my drivers license & made their way to my home to return the wallet.

How wonderful was that??

I would very much like to thank them more fully.  So, if any of you out there fits the bill, please stand up & let me know who you are.

1.  HWPOA BOARD MEETING

2.  DAYLIGHT SAVINGS REMINDER

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour before you go to bed Saturday night, March 11. Daylight savings begins this Sunday, March 12! It’s time to “spring forward” – set your clocks forward one hour!

Daylight Saving Time is also a great time to check the things that keep us safe and ready for emergencies. It is a good time to replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, double check the expiration dates on your emergency kits and replace missing/expired items.

3.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

Residents have reported the following 3 incidents:

(1) A homeowner reported a break in Saturday morning at his home on Dalehurst Ave. around 9:45 am.  The entry to the property was through a back door, where the suspects broke a glass pane to get in.  No one was home at the time.  They have filed a police report.

(2) Earlier this week a guy was walking toward my car, acting very strange. He looked like one of the guys who appeared at a neighbor’s door saying his friend lived at the home when they did not. I drove around the block to see where he was going. I observed him on Malcolm, Hilgard, Lindbrook and Weyburn.  As he was slowly walking down the street he would stop in front of numerous homes scoping them out and walking part way up some of the driveways. As he walked past the apartments he would stop and look in the apartments and their balconies. At one point, he walked up a stairway of an apartment building, tried to open the door and a window next to the door.  I called the UCLA police. The police car showed up shortly thereafter and arrested him. It turns out he had been arrested the day before for trespassing in a home on Loring. Unfortunately, trespassing is a misdemeanor, so he was released. The Sergeant of UCLA PD told me we should all look out for him and if you see him to call them. Their phone # is: 310-825-1491.

(3) A homeowner on Lindbrook recently reported seeing a silver car with New Jersey plates. There was a very suspicious couple inside and when the homeowner asked them what they were doing they both pointed at different homes and said they were waiting for someone. Please keep an eye out for this vehicle.

Just a few tips for your safety:

  • Please remember to HIDE IT, LOCK IT, KEEP IT.
  • Keep your car doors locked and windows closed.
  • Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your vehicle.
  • Set your alarm to your residence, check windows and access points to ensure they are locked and secured.

4.  ROAD WORK ON MULHOLLAND

SoCal Gas Company is preparing to install a new gas meter beneath Mulholland Drive (14430 Mulholland Drive) between Nicada Drive and Beverly Glen Boulevard. The project requires a two foot-trench for both the north and south side of Mulholland Drive. Work will begin Monday March 13th and will end Friday March 17th between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This extensive project requires a lane closure. To help you navigate around the work, flagmen will be directing traffic. Additionally, there will be message boards at both ends of Mulholland Drive (within the project scope), one at Beverly Glen and the other near the 405 warning drivers of the upcoming project. The message boards will be out on site tomorrow. Please use Nicada Drive as an alternate route. As always, any emergency response vehicles will be given full access.

SoCal Gas expects to complete this project in one week. Unfortunately, due to the scope of the project, crews are unable to do work on the weekends.

1.  LAPD ALERT

The following incident took place recently in Valley Village.  While this is not in our immediate area, we are posting it as a reminder to take appropriate precautions to protect your home.

RESIDENTIAL HOT PROWL BURGLARY

3100 block Abington Drive: On Wednesday, 2/22/17, at 1:55 PM, unknown suspects rang the doorbell of residence several times. A resident was inside the home but did not respond to the door. Shortly after the suspects entered the rear yard and smashed a glass door to gain entry into the residence.

The victim hid inside the residence and phoned 911 prompting the police response while suspects were inside ransacking the residence. The Air Support Unit arrived overhead which caused the suspects to flee the residence. Several neighbors witnessed or observed the suspects fleeing through the neighborhood armed with a gun.

An area perimeter was established to contain the suspects and a K-9 search ensued for several hours into the evening. One suspect was located and apprehended as a result of the K-9 search. The second suspect managed to escape the area possibly through a ravine leading out of the contained area.

This is an active investigation and all leads will be pursued to identify and locate the additional suspect and any others connected to the crime.

How will you be alerted if intruders are casing or breaking into your home?

Immediate Detection is key to prevention and apprehension. The Los Angeles Police Department recommends the following tips to help secure your home and harden the target:

  • SURVEILLANCE/SECURITY CAMERAS: Web based surveillance and doorbell camera systems will allow homeowners to view and monitor activity from any smartphone or computer which are motion sensor activated and will alert your device when there is activity. They will also lend valuable information and clues to the investigation.
  • ALARMS: Ensure that security alarms are in good working order and set when not at home whether leaving for 10 minutes or 10 hours. Accessible upstairs doors & windows should have alarm sensors and upstairs rooms should have motion sensors to include the master bedroom.
  • ALARM RESPONSE: Consider a private patrol alarm response to enhance your current alarm and security system. In many cases private patrols are already contracted in many neighborhoods or associations.
  • MOTION SENSOR LIGHTING: Install motion sensor lighting around your home to illuminate normally dark areas around the home. This will also alert residents to outside activity around the home when motion lights are activated.
  • GATES: Ensure that all gates and access points to the side or rear of the residence are locked and secured.
  • DOOR AND WINDOW LOCKS: Ensure that all doors and windows are locked and secured with sturdy secured locks and that there are second locking mechanisms securing all doors and windows as a second line of defense.
  • MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU’RE HOME…Even when you’re not.
  • NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: Monitor suspicious activities in your neighborhood and alert your neighbors. Should the activity escalate to a crime about to occur, crime in progress or crime that just occurred, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!
  • SECURITY PATROLS: Consider after hours on site security at construction sites or major remodel projects. Many neighborhoods contract with private security patrols which monitor neighborhoods and can quickly respond to burglar alarm activations or reports of suspicious activity when they occur.

4.  WILSHIRE BLVD. CLOSURE POSTPONED

Metro Purple Line Extension Notice:

Due to unexpected utility work on Wilshire Blvd. decking for the Wilshire/Fairfax station will be postponed this weekend (March 3-6, 2017).

Wilshire Bl will NOT be closed at Fairfax Ave. and there will not be any detours for traffic or Metro buses this weekend.

Westwood Library has TWO big events this weekend:  Used Book Sale and Free Concert!

L.A. 6.  ELECTION DAY – TUESDAY, MARCH 7

Next Tuesday, March 7 is Primary Election Day. Please cast your vote and make your voice heard!

In addition to voting on races for City Council and Mayor, we will be selecting our LAUSD Board District 4 representative as well voting on several ballot measures.

City Council Seeks To Designate Westwood Church Historic Over Congregation’s Objections

The Twenty-eighth Church of Christ, Scientist [on Hilgard between Lindbrook and Weyburn] contends historic designation is unlawful, but city leaders see it as a way to keep the church.

Over the congregation’s objections it would infringe on its religious freedom and be illegal, the Los Angeles City Council voted Friday to consider a church in Westwood be added to the list of historic- cultural monuments.

8.  SIDEWALK VENDING UPDATE

Several weeks ago, the City Council addressed an issue that continues to be highly contentious – sidewalk vending. Councilmembers held a thoughtful conversation over where and how sidewalk vending should be allowed.

Councilmember Koretz has heard from a number of constituents and stakeholders who have, on numerous occasions, voiced their opposition to street vending. The Councilmember is in favor of a fair and orderly process in which neighborhoods desiring street vending can opt-in.

After agreeing to a number of amendments, the City Council instructed the City Attorney to draft a new ordinance for final approval in the coming months.
