1.  NEW METRO FARES

On September 15, 2014, Metro is changing its bus and rail fares. The change was approved by the Metro Board of Directors on May 22, 2014.

Under the new fare structure, a 1-Way Trip purchased using a TAP card will include transfers to other Metro lines for up to two hours to complete a one-way trip. If the fare is paid using cash, transfers will not be included. Complete details on the new fares can be found at metro.net/fares.

Visit the ‘Fare Change Frequently Asked Questions’ or call 323.GO.METRO for more details on the transition to new fares. To learn more about available fare assistance programs, please visit Metro’s reduced fare and subsidy programs.

2.  FREE SHREDDING EVENT – AUGUST 23

We all know that one of the most important deterrents to avoid identity theft is to shred papers with sensitive information. It is so easy to put off this critical task, but we do so at our peril.

To the rescue – Free Shredding Event at Emerson Community Charter School

Bring your papers, documents and files containing sensitive information for instant secure shredding.

A giant paper shredding truck with bonded specialists with SHRED CONFIDENTIAL will be shredding on site at 800 pounds/hour.

Donations accepted and will benefit Emerson Community Charter School.

Sponsored by Kelly Aluise of Keller Williams Beverly Hills and Ciaran Kelly of Luther Burbank Mortgage.

Saturday, August 23, 2014. 10:00 am – Noon. Emerson Community Charter School, 1650 Selby Avenue

3.  NEIGHBORHOOD BLITZ – ASPHALT REPAIRS

The Bureau of Street Services scheduled a Small Asphalt Repairs (SAR) truck for the Westwood Neighborhood Council District to perform small asphalt repairs on September 12th, 2014.  Small asphalt repairs include:

  •  Potholes and pop outs
  •  Skin patching of eroded or cracked areas
  •  Some sidewalk and curb repairs
  •  Some repairs on concrete streets

Only 15 addresses/issues in all of Westwood may be submitted to the City, so requests will be prioritized by the Westwood Neighborhood Council.

If you are aware of any street issues in Holmby Westwood that need repair, you may submit a request to Dana at hwpoa@aol.com. Dana will compile a list and submit it to the Westwood Neighborhood Council.  Please note, we still have the list of requests from earlier this year, so only submit new requests that are not on our list.  Requests to Dana must be made by August 29th, 2014.

4.  SMARTPHONE APP FOR CITY OF L.A. SERVICES

MyLA311 is a free app that is currently available on iPhones and Android devices. With MyLA311, City of Los Angeles information and services are just a few taps away.

MyLA311 links Angelenos with the services and information they need to enjoy their city, beautify their community and stay connected with their local government.

5.  THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON’T TELL YOU

We will be posting a few of these items every week in the Holmby News. These insights into the way burglars “think” could help save your home from being burglarized:

1. Thanks for the ladder!  Call me a social climber if you will, but I did discover a ladder in your back yard. Thank you for leaving it where I could lean it against your home and easily reach a second-story window. I really love it when upper story openings aren’t wired to a home security system!

So, if you want to keep me out, store your ladder in the basement or a locked garage. And call your security company to wire upper-story windows into your alarm system.

2.  Loved your trash!  Can’t tell you how much fun I have driving around neighborhoods on trash day (especially after big gift holidays) when the empty boxes on the curb reveal what wonderful new toys you have. Your thoughtfulness made it possible for me to land a new laptop and a flat-screen television in one easy trip to your home! Next time, break down the boxes and conceal them in the recycling or trash bins.

3.  Su casa es mi casa! I was sincerely relieved to find your back door was a plain wood-panel door.  I had no trouble kicking it in (my knees appreciate how easy that was!) Imagine how silly I felt when I discovered that your windows weren’t locked anyway. You may want to take a cue from your neighbor and install steel-wrapped exterior doors with deadbolts on all your entries.
