1.  VOLUNTEER NEEDED – DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

HWPOA is seeking a volunteer to chair our Holmby Westwood Emergency Preparedness Program. Well over 200 earthquakes have recently occurred in the Salton Sea area, which Geological Survey experts predict may be an awakening of the San Andreas Fault. They predict our next major earthquake will be a 7.8, 3 minute quake – much stronger than the 6.5, 30 second Northridge quake.

We have been told by the Community Emergency Response Teams (part of the LA Fire Department) that we may not receive any public services for up to 6 weeks. It’s important for every household to prepare for an emergency.

Mayor Garcetti is asking all communities to implement a disaster plan. We have done a lot of the work already:

  • We have 2 written emergency plans – what to do BEFORE a disaster strikes and what to do AFTER a disaster strikes.
  • We have distributed HELP/OK signs and survival supply lists to all residents
  • We have a communications expert
  • Physicians and nurses have volunteered to help
  • We’ve arranged for space to store emergency supplies
  • We’ve arranged for 2 possible areas for neighbors to gather should they need assistance following a disaster.

Now we need someone with leadership experience to head up the implementation of this important program. Please contact Susan Reuben at susanjreuben@yahoo.com.

2.  DRIVERS – PLEASE SLOW DOWN

HWPOA continues to receive reports of drivers speeding through the neighborhood.  One homeowner reported a late model black BMW, with no rear license plate, that regularly races on Loring and Woodruff in close proximity to Warner Avenue School.  The driver, who has been seen by several neighbors, is a young man with dark hair.  Please drive safely and slow down!  Thank you.

4.  HOLMBY PARK IS IN THE MOVIES

Holmby Park is often used for filming.  Before the studios can use the park, they have to apply to a special deparatment under Parks and Recreation for a permit.  The Park Film Office is dedicated to providing information on rules, procedures, restrictions, billing and issuing permits. As for the costs, prep days are $150, film days are $450, clean-up days are $150.  There are many other ancillary charges.  Not only is it fun to see the crews working, but it is nice to know some money is being raised for Parks and Recreation. Often the studios pay to park their big trucks at Holmby while they are filming on a nearby residential street. Here are a few photos taken during a recent shoot.

When reading about the many proposals that are part of the upcoming election, please take time to carefully consider your vote on Measure A for Parks.   Many people think approving Measure A would be good for the county, its people and its quality of life.
