1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

BURGLARY (entry of structure w/intent to commit theft or a felony)
Incident #: 170815971
200 BLOCK LORING AV  |  9/23/2017 @ 1:30 AM

THEFT FROM VEHICLE – PETTY ($950 & under)
Incident #: 170815989
1000 BLOCK HILTS AV  |  9/22/2017 @ 9:00 PM

If anyone knocks, calls, emails, texts, or approaches, unsolicited by you, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR, DO NOT ENGAGE! Respectfully and politely indicate that you are not interested. If the solicitors become persistent or refuse to leave, advise them you are notifying the police and report the details to the Non-Emergency Dispatch at 1-877-275-5273.

Be aware that another trend has been Distraction Burglaries. In these incidents a person posing as a utility worker, roofer or tree trimmer knocks on your front or side door and states they need to access your back yard. The suspect will lure you into the back of your residence while a second suspect will enter through the front door and quickly ransack areas inside the home seeking jewelry, cash and small valuables. In most cases the suspects stay in contact and communicate by cellular telephone or two way radios. Other methods of operation have been female suspects who claim their pet or small child went into your backyard.

Whenever receiving emails from financial institutions or retail stores advising you “click here” or providing a direct link to follow in the email, NEVER CLICK ON THE LINK! This is a phishing scam!

Another recent scam has been persons calling and claiming to be from the power company or other utility. The caller demands immediate payment or the power or other utilities will be shut off. In most of the scams, the caller directs the resident to purchase cash debit cards at a retail location and provide the card numbers and pin number as payment.

Just to reiterate, if you receive anything from anywhere, unsolicited, DO NOT RESPOND!

  • Solicitors, regardless of if they are selling a product, offering a service, seeking a donation or, political in nature, should be turned away.
  • If someone knocks on your door and says you have to step out of your home, especially to go to your back yard, CALL 911 Immediately!
  • When logging into online accounts always use the saved link on your browser or type in the web address on your own.
  • When making wire transfers, ALWAYS verbally verify and confirm the wire instructions prior to completing the wire transfer.
  • You may report Internet scams and crime to www.ic3.gov

2.  OurLA2040 GENERAL PLAN – COMMUNITY MEETING

For the first time in nearly fifty years, the City of Los Angeles is undertaking a comprehensive update to its guiding vision, the General Plan. This initiative, OurLA2040, will result in a new 20-year citywide plan to be adopted in 2020, which will put into place strong and visionary policies to help create a more prosperous, livable, and sustainable Los Angeles.

To launch the OurLA2040 public engagement program, a series of Community Conversations will be taking place throughout the City in a neighborhood near you! This is an opportunity to share your perspective on the topics included in the General Plan update. The first phase of this series will take place in the month of October, focusing on the topics of Open Space and Community.

The city’s parks department Saturday unveiled a state- of-the-art archery range for enthusiasts of the sport and future Olympic athletes as L.A. prepares to host the Olympic Games in 2028.

The Easton Rancho Park Archery Range — located at 2459 Motor Ave. in the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center — underwent an extensive $2 million renovation to replace a smaller, outdated facility with soaring pavilions and four levels of shooting lanes.

The archery range is available for public use, free of charge. Normal park hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week for those who bring their own equipment. Beginners’ classes and equipment are available on weekends on a first-come, first-serve basis.

2.  RELAXED PARKING DURING THE JEWISH HOLIDAYS

The Council Office has notified us that parking will be relaxed in our community during the upcoming Jewish holidays.  For a complete list of dates and locations where the parking rules will be relaxed, please CLICK HERE.

Please note that portions of Strathmore and Westholme near Hillel will not have relaxed parking, per Hillel’s conditional use permit.

We wish you a happy and sweet New Year! L’ Shanah Tovah!

3.  WESTWOOD POST OFFICE – LOCATION CHANGE

Several weeks ago, we reported that the U.S. Post Office had secured temporary storefront space on Broxton Avenue.  We recently learned that the lease agreement fell through and a lease for a different location is being finalized.  We apologize to the residents who went to the Broxton location in search of a post office that was non-existent.

The new temporary location in Westwood Village is scheduled to open mid-October, and we will let you know more information when it is up and running.

4.  HWPOA SECURITY SURVEY RESULTS

Thanks to those members who completed the HWPOA security survey.  Over 120 residents replied and the responses are summarized as follows:

  • 57.6% were satisfied or very satisfied with their respective security companies for their private patrol service.
  • 76.92% were satisfied or very satisfied that the security companies met their expectations for alarm monitoring.
  • 62.64% were satisfied with repair and installation services provided by their companies.

Furthermore, many of you stated that you are utilizing additional security measures to protect your homes. Keep up the good work.

According to Officer Ragsdale of the LAPD, we are doing “pretty darn good” with regards to crime in our area.

We will be passing along the results of the survey to the various security companies, so that they can address the issues raised by customers who are not satisfied.

5.  SPEED HUMP PROGRAM NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

Starting Sept. 22, 8:00 am the L.A. Department of Transportation will begin accepting a new round of applications for its Speed Hump Program. This is the second year in a row that LA will offer this program across the city.

During the 2018 program cycle, LADOT will accept 30 applications from each Council District. For more information about how you can apply for a speed hump in your neighborhood, speed hump guidelines and frequently asked questions, visit ladot.lacity.org/how-do-i/request-speed-humps.

6.  ACTION NEEDED – CELL TOWER BILL

The state legislature has just passed a bill (SB 649) that would strip local jurisdictions of control over placement of cell towers (despite “no” votes by our local elected reps, Assemblymembers Bloom and Ridley-Thomas, and Senator Allen).

This means that the city of LA cannot stop cell companies from locating their towers in any public right of way (even in residential areas, like the grass strip between our sidewalks and streets) or other public property.

SB 649 is opposed by the California Dept. of Finance, the City and County of Los Angeles, Mayor Garcetti, Councilmembers Bonin and Koretz, and the Westside Regional Alliance of Councils (WRAC).

PLEASE WRITE GOV. BROWN ASAP to urge him to VETO THIS BILL. Individual constituents and groups are encouraged to write to Gov. Brown ASAP – email via the Gov.’s Legislative Secretary Tom Dyer, tom.dyer@gov.ca.gov, or call 916-445-2841, or fax 916-558-3160.

3.  FOOD TRUCK REGULATION

Good news for neighbors who have expressed growing concern over food trucks causing traffic accidents, reducing driver visibility and creating quality of life issues such as property damage and littering. The Los Angeles City Council is adopting more sensible regulations that escalate fines on food trucks operating in residential areas for extended periods of time.

The new regulations prohibit food trucks from parking at any residential location for a period that exceeds 30 minutes, and also prohibits them from parking within two blocks they had been parked at said residential location within a four-hour period. Further, a food truck moving out of a location momentarily and then returning within the four-hour limitation does not reset the clock; the time and distance requirements still apply. Failure to comply will be treated as separate and distinct offenses and each subsequent violation will be subject to escalating parking penalties of $73 for a first violation, $123 for the second violation, and $173 for the third.

At this time, it is unclear whether Holmby Park is considered at “residential location” (the regulations may only apply to the residential side of the street).  We will let you know when we get more information.

CHANDELIER FOR SALE

Beautiful Maria Teressa 16 light crystal chandelier, measures 28 inches wide about the same height.  Cost over $2,000 and is in perfect condition.  This is the real thing, not a cheap knock off from China.

We have no suitable place for it in our new home and would like to find a buyer with whom to negotiate a reasonable price.

Buyer to then donate the agreed price to St Judes Children’s Hospital in exchange for the chandelier.  This would effectively make the purchase tax deductible with the purchase price qualifying as a charitable donation.  This way the chandelier finds a new home, and the charity benefits.

If you have an interest I have photographs available that I can email.

Thank you

1.  ARE YOU PREPARED?

Courtesy of Brentwood Homeowner’s Association:

Your safety and security is paramount. As we watch the news in Texas unfold, we are reminded of the importance of emergency preparation. We have been told that first responders will be spread thin and not immediately available to our neighborhood should a major earthquake hit. Specifically, they have said it could be days (or weeks) before damaged power and water lines are restored.

We urge you and your family to spend a little time reading up on the City’s ReadyLA site so you know what to do then and what to do now.

For instance:

  • Do you have a reasonable supply of drinking water in your home?
  • Do you have a reasonable supply of sustainable foods?
  • Do you have flashlights with fresh batteries?
  • Do you have an out of state contact for family to check-in with?

We hope you will never need it, but like insurance, it’s good to have the knowledge and supplies you hope you will never use.

For additional information regarding disaster preparedness, please visit HWPOA’s disaster preparedness page on our website.

2.  STREET REPAIR UPDATE

Thank you to the City of L.A. Bureau of Street Services (BSS), who recently made 8-9 street repairs in the Holmby Westwood neighborhood, filling potholes and fixing other street problems.

Street Resurfacing vs. Street Repair
Many residents have requested repairs on streets where there are numerous bumps and potholes.  These type of repairs are so significant that they fall under the category of street resurfacing rather than pothole repair.  The City of L.A. has already finalized their list of streets that will be resurfaced in the 2017-18 year.  We are in contact with the council office to determine which streets in HWPOA are designated for resurfacing.  Once the information is made available to us, we will let you know.

3.  WESTWOOD POST OFFICE – TEMPORARY LOCATION

The U.S. Post Office has finally secured storefront space on Broxton Avenue, directly across the street from the city’s Broxton Parking Garage.

(This will fill in temporarily for the now closed Village Station, which is closed due to fire damage, until that station is repaired and restored to public service.)

Post Office customers will be able to park for two hours free on Broxton Avenue, and walk directly across the street to the Post Office.

4.  EXTREME HEAT WARNING

Dear Friends,

Extreme heat is NO joke.  With both day and nighttime temperatures remaining near record-highs, the Los Angeles Emergency Management Department, LADWP and LA Animal Services have asked us to share some tips to keep you, your family, and your pets safe.

Yesterday’s Electricity Demand was the Highest of 2017 and New Highs Are Expected as Extreme Temperatures Persist

LADWP is asking customers to continue conserving electricity during the heat storm.

Yesterday, there were nearly 1,930 customers without power. LADWP crews will continue working around the clock throughout the heat storm to restore customers’ lost power as quickly and safely as possible. In order to decrease strain on the electric grid, we urge customers to do what they can to help conserve energy.

Some energy-saving measures that customers can take include keeping their thermostats set at 78 degrees; keeping curtains, blinds and drapes closed to keep sunlight out and keep home interiors cool; avoiding the use of major appliances at peak usage hours during the day; and opening doors and windows at night to allow cool air to circulate.

To report any loss of power, call 1-800-DIAL-DWP. To monitor outage status, see www.ladwp.com or follow @LADWP on Twitter.

Cooling Centers Extending Hours of Operation

If you need to cool off, the City of LA offers cooling centers where you can beat the heat. Due to extreme heat, cooling center locations are offering extended hours.   You can call 3-1-1 or go to emergency.lacity.org/heat for a full list of cooling center locations throughout Los Angeles and for updated hours of operation.

In addition, follow these simple tips to stay cool:

  • Drink plenty of cool water! Stay hydrated.
  • Wear loose, light-colored clothing that will keep you cool. Wear sunscreen and a hat for protection.
  • Check on neighbors who might be vulnerable to the heat, especially those without air conditioning.
  • Never leave children or pets in a car – not even for one minute. Temperatures inside a car can quickly skyrocket to deadly levels.
  • If you work or play outside, take frequent breaks to hydrate and cool off in the shade.  Symptoms of heat-related illness include dizziness, fatigue, faintness, headaches, muscle cramps, and increased thirst. If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention.

Remember, when it is hot for you, it may be even hotter for your four-legged friends.

Dogs and cats do not sweat through their skin. They cool themselves by panting or rapid breathing, which means dogs and cats must work extra hard to stay cool.  Too much heat can be extremely dangerous or even fatal for companion animals.

LA Animal Services reminds pet owners about the hazards of hot weather and how to keep your furry loved ones healthy and comfortable. Here are some pet safety tips:

Never leave your pet alone inside a vehicle
If your pet cannot go inside at every stop with you, they are safer at home on hot days. Car interiors heat very quickly, even with the windows open. If it is 90 degrees out, temperatures can top 160 degrees faster than you can walk around the block. In fact, it’s against the law to leave an animal in a vehicle if doing so endangers the health or well-being of the animal.

Give your pet extra water
Always make sure that your dog or cat has plenty of fresh water to drink. A bucket that holds a gallon or more of water will stay cool longer than water in a shallow pan. Some dogs consider ice cubes a treat, and you can add a few to the water bowl.

Care for your pet’s coat
Longer coated dogs and cats who are brushed regularly have natural insulation from the heat. However, if the coat has gotten matted, a clip will make your buddy much more comfortable. But, be aware, that newly clipped and lighter coated pets, especially white ones, are at higher risk for skin cancer and they are more susceptible to sunburn.

Don’t leave your pet outdoors for a long time
If your dog has to be left outdoors for awhile, make sure they have plenty of access to shade such as trees, a covered patio or cool spot under the porch.  Apply a pet specific or hypoallergenic sunscreen on sensitive areas like the nose, tips of ears and belly especially if they have light or thin fur.

Avoid hot ground surfaces
While walking your dog outdoors, play particular attention to the pavement, sidewalks or sand. Check the temperature with your hand, if it’s too hot to touch then it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

Know the signs of overheating
If your dog or cat begins very rapid, noisy breathing, has trouble swallowing and looks very distressed, they could be having a heatstroke. Get the animal out of the heat. Apply cold, wet towels to the back of the head. Place cold packs wrapped in towels or plain wet towels between the back legs and on the belly. Cool off your pet and take them to the veterinarian immediately.

Stay cool!

Sincerely,
Paul Koretz, Council Member – 5th District
City of Los Angeles

6.  PORTO’S BAKERY COMING TO CENTURY CITY

Courtesy of LAIST.com author Tim Loc:

Porto’s pop-up bakery will arrive at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City in September. As noted at Eater, the Cuban bakery will crop up as a café called Doña Dulce. It will dole out Porto’s classic cheese rolls and raspberry besitos, among other items. There will also be coffee from F. Gaviña & Sons, which was founded in Cuba in 1870.

The Cuban connection is not a coincidence—the pop-up will be part of an exhibit that focuses on photography in Cuba. Titled CUBA IS, the exhibit builds up to an intimate portrait that reveals the humanity taking place behind the island country’s colorful walls. There’ll be over 120 photos that touch on subjects ranging from El paquete, an underground system of sharing digital content, to the Cuban punk rockers dubbed “Los Frikis.” The exhibit includes works by Leysis Quesada, Raúl Cañibano, Tria Giovan, and Elliot Erwitt.

CUBA IS will kick things off with an opening celebration on September 9 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will be food, cocktails, music, and dance performances. The exhibit, which is free, will run from September 9 to March 4.

The Porto’s Doña Dulce pop-up will be in place from September 9, 2017 to March 8, 2018, and will only be open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Annenberg Space for Photography is at 2000 Avenue of the Stars #10, Century City. (213) 403-3000. Admission is free for exhibits and public programming.
