2.  LAPD ALERT – PURSE THEFTS

There has been a rash of purse thefts in the West LA area, including Westwood Village.

These incidents typically occur in upscale restaurants, with female diners positioning their purses on the back of their chairs or adjacent chairs. Suspects target their victims, often carrying jackets in their hands, placing the jacket over the victims’ purse, concealing and removing the purse.

Suspects usually head to retail venue and make purchases (often gift cards) with victim’s credit cards before the theft is discovered.  For more information, please click here:  08150804-3CCtheftpurse

We had a great turnout at the earthquake presentation last night.  Thank you to geologist Deborah Weiser and to LAFD Battalion Chief Mark Akahoshi for educating our community, and thank you to HWPOA Vice President, Susan Reuben, for organizing the event.

If you were unable to attend the meeting, we videotaped the presentation so that everyone could see it.  The video will be posted online soon and we will notify everyone at that time.

Below, you will find links to a number of websites that were mentioned at the meeting that may be helpful with earthquake preparedness and safety:

3.  PROTECT YOURSELF FROM IDENTITY THEFT

From LA City Attorney, Mike Feuer:

We are launching a public awareness campaign to help individuals protect themselves from becoming victims of identity theft. Examples of simple steps you can take include:

  • Shred all documents containing personal, financial or medical information before you throw them out.
  • Be cautious using debit cards. Don’t use at gas pumps or for shopping online.
  • Don’t respond to e-mails, calls or texts seeking sensitive information. Legitimate companies don’t seek customers’ information this way.
  • Create strong passwords that mix letters, numbers and special characters, and use different passwords for different accounts.
  • Lock your mailbox. Stolen mail is a leading cause of identity theft.
  • Don’t keep your license, title and registration in your glove compartment.

To find out more about our efforts please go to: www.freepdfhosting.com/1ee7656a54.pdf

4.  LOST DOG UPDATE – GOOD NEWS

A couple days ago, we posted a notice about a lost dog in the neighborhood.  Good news – Lucky was found no more than 100 feet from Dalehurst and Lomond where he went missing. He fell into a concrete window casement 4 feet below the level of the ground.
For two days he was there whining and the property owners thought their neighbors had gotten a new puppy until they figured out the crying was coming from their basement. Lucky came out with his tail wagging and spirits high. After eating and drinking he is as good as new.

The good that came out of this was getting to hear from so many people who reached out to us with kind e-mails and phone calls and went out of their way to search for Lucky in their own yards and on their walks. We are eternally grateful and appreciative of the wonderful neighborhood we live in.

Warm regards,
Pat & Ron Weiner

5.  LIBRARY EVENTS – TO LIVE AND DINE IN LA

There are several programs centered around the LA Public Library’s “To Live and Dine in LA” initiative.

Saturday, 8/22 at 1:00 PM
Chef Ernest Miller is back to present: Chili, Chiles and Hot Sauce: A spicy Sampling of California History—When you think chiles and hot sauces, you often think of Mexico but you should really think of southern California, as we are one of the world’s largest growers and many recipes were invented here. This talk covers the popular pepper and how it has been used through history. Includes preparation of a chili-related snack by the chef.

Tuesday 8/25 at 5:15 PM
We present the movie ‘Chef’: A chef who loses his restaurant job starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family.  Starring Jon Favreau, Sofia Vergara and John Leguizamo.  Roy Choi, a culinary institution in this town, and creator of the wildly popular Kogi BBQ Taco Truck consulted on this film. 114 minutes, rated R.

Programs will take place at the Westwood Branch Library (1246 Glendon Ave.).  All programs are free and parking is validated.

1.  STREET REPAIR REQUESTS

The Bureau of Street Services has scheduled a Small Asphalt Repairs (SAR) truck (which is described as 1 small asphalt repair truck, consisting of 2 workers and asphalt), for the Westwood Neighborhood Council area, to perform small asphalt repairs on 9/9/15.

The type of repairs that can be addressed with this program include the following:
– Potholes and pop outs
– Skin patching of eroded or cracked areas
– Some repairs on concrete streets

The Westwood Neighborhood Council has asked us to submit suggested locations in our neighborhood for small street repairs. The city will only send the SAR truck to a total of 15 locations in the entire Westwood Neighborhood Council area, so Holmby Westwood will only see a handful of repairs.

If you are aware of any spots in our neighborhood that would be particularly good candidates for this program, please send requests to Dana at hwpoa@aol.com no later than August 21.  Please only send street repair requests, not sidewalks or curbs.

4.  STUDIO/COMMERCIAL FILMING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Dear Holmby Westwood residents,

Studio/commercial filming has become a habit in Holmby Westwood both during the week and on weekends. I will be meeting with Community Relations at FILM/LA to discuss this recent situation. The office gets repeated calls from neighbors about the problems of parking and home access. We have been sent photos of trucks double parked, wardrobe out on the sidewalk, generators, etc. We will have had 3 films at 3 sites in our community within 2 weeks.

While the Board understands the need to support our film industry, we have usually been able to accommodate filming needs without impacts on residents.

Please help us manage this situation.

Thank you,
Sandy Brown
HWPOA President

1.  LAPD CRIME REPORT

We received a report from the LAPD regarding the following incident:

Assault with a Deadly Weapon – Shooting in Westwood:
1000 block Broxton Ave. RD: 0817. Handgun. On 8/2/15, at approximately 1:55 AM, the shooting victim and several friends had just left a Westwood restaurant bar and became involved in an altercation in the parking lot located on Broxton Avenue. During the altercation the victim was knocked to the ground when a suspect then retrieved a handgun and fired at least two rounds toward the victim, striking him at least once in the upper torso. The suspects who are described as four Male Blacks in their 20’s fled in a vehicle described as a silver Nissan, possibly an Altima, with tinted windows.

2.  ANOTHER PACKAGE THEFT

A resident on Conway reported that on Saturday, August 1st, UPS delivered a package to their home. Unfortunately, the delivery person did not ring the doorbell and left the package on the front doorstep. When the resident checked their email, they discovered the package had been delivered, but there was no package there. Within 30 minutes to 45 minutes of delivery, the package had been stolen from the front door.

3.  SIDEWALK VENDING

The Los Angeles City Council voted recently to reinstate a ban on unpermitted vending at city parks and beaches, which could impose escalating fines and eventually misdemeanor charges against people who sell their wares or services there without getting city permission. In addition, they are seeking additional input from the community:

Survey
The City of Los Angeles is conducting a survey to gather community input with respect to vending on City sidewalks and in City parks. The Los Angeles Municipal Code prohibits vending on sidewalks and is considered a misdemeanor and vending in City parks is only allowed with a permit.  To take the survey, please CLICK HERE

Community Meeting
As the City of Los Angeles considers revisions to the existing prohibition on sidewalk vending, the City Council’s Economic Development Committee is asking for input from neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles.  A meeting is scheduled as follows:

Tuesday, August 11, 2015
6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
